This game made me fall in love with problem solving.
While many consider "Portal 2" to be one of if not *the* greatest video game of all time, I found it to be a rather derivative and unengaging experience. You are given a Portal gun. It is the same Portal gun as from the first game. You must solve puzzles once again. That is really the entirety of this game. They have tried to make the gameplay more engaging; adding different puzzle mechanics like the gels or the tractor beams, or having puzzle areas not be in test chambers but a fair variety of different locations. These are all not nearly entertaining enough to be considered worthwhile additions. For the most part, every puzzle to be solved in this game is a puzzle that can be solved in it's predecessor. The tractor beams are far too slow and boring to work with, and the solution to the gel puzzles are so incredibly easy that it's also very boring. Not a single puzzle in this game was remotely interesting. The most fun I had playing was during the VERY END of the game, which is almost entirely a collection of story focused fast-paced action sequences and nothing more that are very hard to fail unless you're trying to do so. Speaking of the story, it's the simplest, easiest to understand narrative I think I've seen in a video game. It was like something you would find in a children's book. The idea of exploring the secrets behind Aperture Science in a more expansive way is a very disappointing follow-up from the first game. In Portal, all you knew about Aperture Science were the test rooms. There were glimpses of an outside world, such as broken wall plates revealing vent systems, office rooms overlooking the chambers, and strange writings from an unknown party that all add a sense of immense mystery and intrigue. And of course at the very end once you break free from the test chambers to confront GladOS, you see more of the inner-workings of this building, revealing how detailed and large in scope it truly is, and how little hope there was of escaping. It was spectacular. And once you actually do manage to make it to Heaven, you are dragged back down to Hell instantly. A nice and clean dystopian narrative. Portal 2 takes this fascinating concept and runs it into the ground. It clearly is presenting such "lore important" areas like the old Aperture Science or many such places in an attempt to make us Portal 1 players look on in shock and awe. In more modern terms it is similar to modern superhero movies where they leave in brief moments of silence clearly intended for audience reactions. I, however, did not react to anything in Portal 2. This re-hash of such a brilliantly executed concept from the game before it evoked no emotion in me to warrant any reaction. All of the issues I have with the gameplay could easily have been solved by a good story. Often are the games with the most gameplay issues the ones that have the greatest stories. But as I had mentioned before, it is really simple, and frankly boring. You and Wheatley have to stop GladOS. Then Wheatley betrays you. Then you and GladOS have to stop Wheatley. There is nothing else to this. In an attempt to give this story any merit at all, there were horrible attempts at dead-pan comedy that were so painfully unfunny I feel like I could attend a 17 year old's stand-up routine at my local pub and find that more entertaining. Every single "funny" line in this game was written solely to be placed in shoddy news articles about the "most iconic video game quotes", or "funniest video game dialogue", etc. It is no different than a Hollywood blockbuster. And we all know how horrible those are. There is some good qualities to this game. I will admit the innovative technological developments this game showcased were very impressive, and surprisingly there have not been very many games attempting to replicate Portal's formula in current day (ref. 2026). That is about it. In the end, every single Valve game is a tech-demo disguised as a normal game. Portal 1 was the only game in their library that ever felt like it was designed to be a memorable experience in an artistic sense. Portal 2, unfortunately, feels like it was designed to be popular and make money. It is the 'Jaws' of video games.
When life gives you lemons, DON'T MAKE LEMONADE
Good game. But I would be dead of old age before Potal 3 releases.
