Fun short gem
Nice little game. I am interested to see what the developer do next!
Note: Dead PvP game This game contains no meaningful single player content beyond AI botmatching. There's no viably populated servers/active player population. This game cannot be played as intended.
When you see the 4X strategy label tacked onto a game, your first thought is "Wow, I'm getting to play Civilization or Master of Orion or something cool like that" and you're always going to be disappointed from what Steam Direct has to offer instead. Case in point, "Pollute & Conquer" which is a lot like Settlers of Catan but on meth and without graduating high school. This 4X is "industry and pollution" orientated and involves buying and building on tiles on a hex grid. There's a preachy subtext about how fossil fuels cause pollution, and while that is right, crappy video games are not the correct place to spread political evangelism. This does not make political evangelism better, it just makes gaming worse. This is a dead PvP game. Why did "Pollute & Conquer" fail? Time for a video game autopsy. Almost every PvP exclusive game on Steam fails. Developers often assume just because they published their game, it's going to "go viral". I'm guessing this is a case of the developers making this game in complete isolation without even bothering to look at what other PvP games on Steam already offer. There's fierce competition in the PvP game arena... and I'm not referring to players fighting other players. There's thousands of PvP-only games but only a tiny handful of them are successful enough to attract and keep a wide player base. This game failed to compete and didn't get enough people to stay active. Despite being free, it did not have what it takes, it's as simple as that. There is no real single player content here. The developer thought other players could replace actual storytelling and level design. That was a bad bet to make, and yeah, the developer lost. Hard. Without a player base or meaningful solo content (storytelling, narrative, you know, what makes games like GTA famous), the game has nothing to offer. Other players are not a substitute for doing the job of a developer and creating meaningful game content. So this looks like an old 1990's Adobe Flash game that you might play in a web browser, and the problem there is obviously Steam wasn't intended to try compete with Chrome and Firefox. If it can be done in a web browser, it's not even close to a cutting edge PC gaming experience. That's a problem. In terms of visuals, this features really godawful MS-Paint tier "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. The deplorably bad visuals here come across as an insult to gamers. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Even as a free game, this couldn't find an audience. With a peak of only 4 players, it's clear the Steam community took one look and walked away. They literally couldn't pay people to spend time playing this. All other issues aside (any of which would disqualify this from being worth your time), this is a game that relies on other players for it to be viable, and because there's not enough players, it's not viable. I can't recommend anyone downloads this, it's basically dead. Remember what I often say... if you don't agree with what I've said about this game, by all means add it to your library and play it. My review is just here to inform your decision, and if you think I was wrong and you downloaded the game, then I've done what I really wanted to do... inform your decision.
7/10 Ecology-themed TBS TLDR: a simple turn-based expansion game where you strike balance between pollution, income, and "hearts". Randomness of "catastrophic events" on tiles reduces tactical planning. Good: + free + a unique system with 3 resources provides good variety So-so: +/- graphics are very basic +/- relaxing music gets repetitive after a while +/- the tutorial is there but it just shows tips on the functions of the UI. I'd prefer an interactive tutorial that follows your actions on a pre-determined map +/- catastrophic events happen randomly. Also, they may happen because of pollution that the enemy creates, even if your own economy produces no pollution at all. The degree of randomness is probably too high, as balance of power can change wildly after many tiles get suddenly lost to catastrophic events Bad: - nothing

[th]I'm a Steam curator, you can follow me[/th]
