It's a sci-fi adventure where you're a technician sent to a remote spacebase, but when you get there all kindsa weird stuff has happened and you have to figure out what. There's audiologs, puzzles, mystery, all the usual stuff. One thing this game does very well is object interaction, and setting up logical systems for how it's world works. Sometimes these objects and systems are used for puzzles, but very often they're simply there to make the world feel more real. For instance, I discover that a panel in the control room actually controls the locks on every door in the base. Game progress does not rely on using this panel to open any of the doors, but it was still fun to see that this system existed within the gameworld. There's also plenty of tools you can pick up and use. Totally not necessary in any way, but the fact that when you hit the use button while holding a flashlight it actually flicks on and off is a small thrill. Being able to pick up and interact with non-essential objects is of course something that's been around for a long time, but this stuff feels especially nice in VR. So how's the game beyond just tinkering with random objects? It's ok! The touch-control implementation is a bit janky, but useable. Storywise, it gets off to kind of a hectic and messy start where it's difficult to take it all in, but once it slows down and starts letting you uncover the mystery at your own pace it's good. The ending was pretty great too.
In POLLEN, you are an investigator seeking to discover what happened to the scientists on a research base on Saturn's moon Titan. The game is played in first person, and you manipulate items, buttons, levers, etc. in order to solve puzzles and learn what happened at the station. If you've played Soma, the gameplay is much the same, although POLLEN is less a horror game, and there are no enemies. I think there's only one place where you can die, although I didn't test to find out. I enjoyed this game, overall. I was curious to learn what happened at the base, and the audio logs and written documents were intriguing and at times humorous. The game itself is short - I finished the game in 3 hours, and that was with me being uncertain where to find certain key items at the end of the game, and wandering around a lot. I believe this game was designed for VR foremost - I played the game in 'flat' (non-VR) mode myself, but I would have played it in VR if I still had a headset. I think this game would be impressive in VR. The objects have a high amount of detail, and the game encourages you to pick them up and put them right in front of your face, even though most of them don't really affect gameplay (the items needed to solve puzzles 'glow', and go into your inventory, so it's obvious which items are important). In particular, I think the end sequence would be rather impressive in VR. It is still fun in flat mode, though. The game even unlocks a 'watch end sequence only' command once you finish the game, so I think the game creators felt people would want to watch this unique sequence multiple times. I recommend this game, particularly at its current relatively low price. Even at this low price, the amount of gameplay is short compared to other games, but I found the narrative and general premise of the game to be uniquely intriguing.
It is fun but overpriced with no replay value. If it had modding support it would be awesome.
I played this through some years ago. Now I thought I'd play it again, but I can't get the controller to work properly with it in Windows 11. I guess I could use keyboard and mouse, but this wasn't interesting enough to suffer the joint pain.
P·O·L·L·E·N blends a retro-futuristic game design with an intriguing story and immersive (sometimes a bit thriller-ish) atmosphere. The player has to investigate the sudden loss of communication with a research station on Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Throughout the game the player needs to collect audio tapes to uncover the story of the mysterious disappearance of the crew and solve puzzles to get access to more and more modules of the research station. It is a feature worth mentioning, that the game barely gives any hint on what the player should do, and many of the puzzles can be solved in multiple ways. It is definitely recommended to thoroughly investigate the station and look behind every box, since most audio tapes are well hidden, and one can also find hidden collectibles. P·O·L·L·E·N is not specifically a long game, but when one listens to all the audio tapes and enjoys all the content the game has to offer, it can take around 5 hours from start to finish, perfect for a Sunday gaming session. All in all, P·O·L·L·E·N is a game with a great atmosphere, interesting story and good puzzles. VR headsets are supported, but I didn't get a chance to give it a try. Apart from minor glitches, the game runs smoothly at 60fps. It is definitely worth it's current price at €9.99.
As of 2024 this game doesn't even launch, and it seems to be completely abandoned, do not buy it.
