I'd recommend this to those who both enjoy puzzle games a la "The Witness" or "Portal", and enjoyed the rambling bits of "Getting Over It". If you're not down with one or the other, you're probably good skipping this one as it isn't very long at all, you could finish the story in 2 hours and feasibly 100% it in less than 3 hours.
By itself this is a pretty alright game ... but for what you get the price is just too high. You will get maybe 4 hours out of this game. Perhaps 5 if you haven't played many puzzlers before. These puzzles aren't really head scratchers either. They are all very straightforward and there's many repeats. If there are any that are difficult it's because their mechanics are poorly defined or poorly communicated and that's literally the only source of difficulty. All of that would be fine if the price point reflected that, but $20 is just far too high for what you get here, imho. Additionally, I had this game in my wish list for quite literally years and never once did it go on sale. Normally, I would say wait for a sale to pick this up, but it never goes on sale so you may as well just skip this one. I have a sneaking suspicion it's no accident that this overpriced game is never on sale.
It's got some interesting puzzles, some of which involve clicking things, and others that care about where (and what) you're looking, or moving... but there's nothing deep here. You can pick apart the main game in about two hours. There are three secret puzzles too (two of which I found on my first play-through, but couldn't be bothered to do), and 8 hidden shiny secrets (none of which I found on my first go). The narrator thinks he is your character, and a God, and muses on his world and abilities the whole time, up until realizing that you are controlling him, which results in an annoying section where you fight for control of the character. Don't pay $20 for this. Wait for a sale and pick it up for $5 or less.
This short first-person puzzle game is clever and very pretty. The puzzle solutions often require quite a bit of experimentation and observation skills. Sometimes the most obvious solutions are the hardest to figure out. However, not all puzzles are great: some are quite trivial. Perhaps if the game were longer the weaker puzzles would not feel so bleh. Unfortunately, though there are some original puzzle mechanics, the game as a whole feels very derivative of other games, most notably of The Talos Principle in its look, feel, and thematic discussion. Is it really so hard to come up with original ideas in this genre? Apparently it is, because the developers' next game, The Turing Test, is even more blatantly derivative, specifically of Portal. Pneuma is a good if short game, but it's hard not to be annoyed by its lack of originality. It seems many reviewers found Pneuma's narrator to be insufferable. For me, it did get to be a bit much later in the game. However, the game is so short that it never becomes too grating.
Pneuma: Breath of Life is an extraordinary puzzle game that stands out with its visually stunning world and deeply immersive gameplay. From the moment you begin, the game envelops you in its beautiful environments, where vibrant colors and intricate designs make every setting feel unique and alive. What truly sets the game apart, though, is its innovative puzzle mechanics that involve manipulating the very fabric of the world around you. By changing your perception of reality, you can alter the environment itself, revealing new paths, shifting platforms, and unlocking hidden secrets. The puzzles in Pneuma: Breath of Life are intelligently crafted. They don't simply rely on brute force or trial and error but challenge your ability to think critically about how the world operates. Every puzzle feels like a mini philosophy lesson in itself, forcing you to consider not just the mechanics of the world but the nature of existence itself. It’s not just about solving puzzles—it's about discovering new ways to interact with your environment and understanding the purpose behind it. The game’s world is gorgeous and filled with detail, with each area presenting a new visual theme, from grand, ancient temples to surreal, abstract environments. These settings are more than just backdrops; they feel like an integral part of the puzzle-solving experience, almost like characters themselves that guide you through your journey. The voice acting and narration are fantastic, with Pneuma himself guiding you through the experience, offering insights, hints, and reflections on your progress. His voice adds a layer of depth to the game, making it feel like you’re part of a larger narrative about self-discovery and exploration. The soundtrack complements this, with a beautiful, ambient score that changes to match the tone of the environment, pulling you deeper into the world. Ultimately, Pneuma: Breath of Life offers not only a thought-provoking challenge but also a contemplative journey that pushes the boundaries of what a puzzle game can be. The combination of clever mechanics, stunning visuals, and a deeply philosophical narrative creates an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you’ve finished playing. If you're looking for a game that’s not only fun but also makes you think and feel, this is a must-play title. Highly recommend to anyone who loves games that are as much about exploration and introspection as they are about solving puzzles.
Great game 10/10
Beautiful art style with a decent story line. Most puzzles are self explanatory so you probably won't have to use a guide to solve any which definitely helps you to feel more satisfied in completing the game
100% GPU on GTX1060 OC 6gb in the main menu..
This game is enjoyable. I played a majority of this game on LSD however I still had a fun time and completed it all. The secret collectibles and puzzles were a nice touch, it's a relaxing game with a nice vibe, sort of like playing peaceful survival on Minecraft. Very nice :)
