About

Traverse the beautiful, immense lands of Mesoamerica! This interconnected world blends real-world, historical locations. A love letter to our rich legacy.

You've seen lots of laser guns and swords. Even whips! But... Halberds? Man, that's such a cool and underrated weapon for video games! Ideal for pogos!
Comic art style blends into gameplay with a well integrated interface. The player is always in control in this comic book!
We got several influences from games we love, such as:
Half-Life 2 - Open storytelling, so the player is always playing!
Super Metroid - Great atmosphere in an interconnected world!
Hollow Knight - Aerial combat through pogo-system!
Europa Universalis - Attention to detail when dealing with History!
Comix Zone - A diegetic use of comic art style in order to bring a unique experience.
Even though Plus Ultra: Legado is a fictional story with some supernatural events, we have made a strong research to accurately represent each civilization, character, and historical event. In fact, it has been translated into Nahuatl.
Most Metroidvanias are very dark. Which is great! But Plus Ultra: Legado wants to offer something different, something fresh.
Many sidescrolling video games force you to stop playing when a textbox appears. This is not the case of Plus Ultra: Legado. Move freely and even abandon story events if desired!
There are pieces of gold hidden all over this interconnected world. Traverse the land, explore each corner, and enhance your weapons.

I bought this game with kind of low expectations. I didn't think quasi-historical Metroidvania featuring a conquistador fighting in Mexico was going to be either boring or so absurd it would've been pointless to give it the place-setting it has. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with this game. Firstly it's a very competent MV. It has a good variety of enemies and locations. There's a variety of hidden hideaways and some tough puzzles. The enemies have two varieties. There's local fauna like jaguars, ocelots, armadillos and there's human enemies which include both the Spanish and natives. The fights are mostly fun but sometimes can be overwhelming and you need to resort to some cheese tactics occasionally to prevail. The bosses are a varied. Some are just straight fights with adds that join and some have a more puzzled element to them. None of the boss fights took me more than 3 tries. This is not a punishingly difficult game but it's not a walk in the park either. The tougher puzzles involved juggling explosive items to blow up walls and the damn dog levels where you navigate your faithful companion Luna through obstacle courses to retrieve items or throw switches. Both are pretty stressful and can be frustrating. The story was a bit hard to follow but included a few notable people from that era of history. Francisco Cortes and Montezuma make an appearance. Sometimes it would show you where to go next to advance the story and sometimes I just wandered into it. The map was serviceable and auto marked walls and ability gates. There's fast travel and it uses modern style MV meta where you don't lose notable items when if you die or quit before a save. I would tier list it as a B+ in a MV tier list.
A lovely gaym with some great ideas, but frustrating and underdeveloped core systems. The thumb would be up for how it looks, the cool twisted semi historical setting and some cool ideas, euch as the awesome minimap, items etc being shown as edges if the page being flipped. Loved it. Also how you feel like you are in a story.. But.. The core systems of the gaym are terrible. Combat is simplistic and unrewarding to the point that it makes sense to not engage with it. Having to pogo hop and hit barrels is infuriating and imprecise, causing me to run 3x through the map trying to find out where to go while progress blocked by barrel hop onto platform situation. Its terrible. If you could be more precise and determine the exact trajectory of the barrel, like a golf gaym, that would work. But this does not. Most infuriating is that there seems to be no quest log, dialog log or anything that tells me wtf is going on or where to go. I am old. I dont have the time to sit and finish the gaym in a single sitting. I need to pick it up agter a week and recap on wtf is going on. Cant here.. also, why does it stutter when loading between rooms in such a simle gaym? So, turn this into a no combat exploration story gaym without ♥♥♥♥♥♥ barrel hopping and I would like it. Or fix the barrels, combat system, give me a quest log, then I would LOVE it.
I would really like to like this game. The comic art style is nice, the story looks promising. But there are a few glaring gameplay issues that just ruin the experience:

The physics are off by a tiny bit, the falling acceleration feels too fast and the inertia too little. That on its own is not a huge problem, but it becomes a pain when combined with
your weapon's buggy hit detection. Quite often, the weapon swing clearly visually touches the enemy but magically does not connect. This in combination with the previous issue and the very short attack animation makes it a complete gamble whether you can successfully pogo, Hollow Knight style, off an enemy repeatedly. It already feels like there is only a 1-2 frame window, which can only work at all in a game with completely solid hit detection. The way it is right now, it is frustrating and unfair. I don't know whether this is due to timed gaps in the hitboxes or just bad hitbox design that does not align with the weapon swing, but it makes every boss fight a RNG experience.
The level design is completely unimaginative. Almost every screen in the game consist mainly of semi-solid platforms floating in thin air or being held in place by an equally impossible wire construction in the background. So far, there is maybe one in 30 screens that is half memorable at all.
No map markers. In the beginning of the game, you pass many, many doors that you can't open yet. I guess the game expects you to keep offline maps or just backtrack absolutely every previously visited screen whenever you get a new ability.
Enemy AI is a bit lacking. Most of the wildlife (including weird floating sand clouds that are probably supposed to represent bee swarms?) just charges you head-on with zero regard for its own survival. Human enemies just stand there and take in when you attack them from a lower platform. The only hits you take from 90% of the enemies are due to impatience or because your weapon misses them due to bad hit detection.
In its current state, I cannot recommend the game. If they ever choose to fix at least the hit detection issue, I might.
