Pitcher and the Whale is a short 2d platformer where a whale comes out of nowhere like a chapter from a Douglas Adam's novel and needs your help before time runs out. Took me under 30 minutes to successfully save the whale using a game controller (keyboard is also an option). From there it's a 'get the highest score, find all the gems' arcade game sort of deals. Difficulty is easy. Fantastic game for kids. And it's Free! This game is cute, harmless, the graphics and gameplay are good, and it's a good game to play if you want to kill some time. From what I understand there's only one level and it comes across like a demo of a game. There's also a fox!

Лиса в тазике делает прыг-скок!
Fun little free to play game! I've made a speedrun page for it and will race people if they want to join me! The current run is an "all gems" run. Trying to get all the gems in the quickest possible time!
Pitcher & the Whale

"Pitcher And The Whale" is a 2D retro pixel puzzle platformer that's been slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit from Yoyogames. Gameplay consists of guiding a 2D retro pixel fox with a bucket on his head around a map to give water to a beached whale. Believe it or not I've a lot seen worse game ideas. There's a fairly unique mechanism where you must collect water in the bucket, so the bucket has a "fill level", and this differentiates the game from most construction kit garbage shovelware that's spamming Steam. You might be inclined to say, "Hey, this is another asset flip of Sunny Land written by Ansimuz", because it sure as heck looks like it, retro pixel platformer, green grass and dirt tileset, retro pixel fox... but from what I can see these are all different assets and the developer just came up with something that just co-incidentally looks like Sunny Land. I guess Richard Dawkins would call that "Covergent Evolution", if such a thing could apply to retro pixel crap. So I am pleased to determine this is not some nasty asset flip, but instead a genuine attempt to make a video game by a genuinely well intentioned game developer who simply didn't know how to make a game/lacked the budget and resources to do so properly and resorted to using a cheap nasty video game construction kit. For that reason, let's review this at face value, as a PC game for PC gamers. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and unsurprisingly results in products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. Using a video game construction kit requires little to no talent or skill as a game developer. Very often, GameMaker Studio is used to make shovelware and lazy cash grabs, although in this case the game is completely free. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. This is certainly a gesture that shows dedication to the gaming industry. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises like pixel art and using off the shelf game templates and construction kits.
Is it cute? Yes. Is it fun? No. The gameplay was over before it could be enjoyable, and wasn't interesting or engaging enough to do many playthroughs.
I was actually surprised to have a good game during a terrible year, it's simple to understand, but you can become good at it. The visual is adorable, I like this art style where everything is made by hand and looks like a book for kids.
