Pion is an extremely entertaining experience to play. Fast-paced gameplay with a super smooth flow, that not only looks great but also provides some seriously butt-clenching moments! All the weapons feel good to fire, and is well matched with their soundeffects. The enemies are nicely varied and gives you a nice challenge! Will definitely keep playing this as the replayability is fun and easy. Can't wait for more content!! Bravo to the creator, amazing solo-work!!
Full Disclosure: I got a key for free and I playtested this game before it released on Steam in the Early Access program. Explosive and satisfying combat with variety thanks to three different playable ships and lots of different primary and secondary weapons. Upgrades reward progress and make you stronger, but you also get to fight stronger enemies. As this released on Early Access just recently, there are obviously things that need some work. Balancing, Content etc., but it is already very fun to play. I'll update this review as development continues.
Greetings fellow steam users !!. Long time twin-stix veteran here. Was given a key for the purpose of laying down my highly respected, and at the same time completely disregarded, two-cents on this small slice of rather obscure pie, in the the extremely under-appreciated niche we call the swin stick shooter genre. Personally i would describe PION as a semi lite rogue-like non twin stick shooter. I say non twin stick, because i had much greater success using the keyboard and mouse. Each to his own though. (And also the fact that it was just a slight mission to get the controller working in the settings) I would say in its current state (patch 0.264) the game is somewhat unfinished and definitely in need of some polishing required. However buried within the mildly clunky controls and somewhat non intuitive game mechanics there is a solid rogue-like element. I found the difficulty curve quite harsh and after like 10 tries had no passed the third boss. But i found the roge like element grabbed me somewhat and i felt compelled to hit the restart button time and time again, while feeling that subtle grip of the roguelike element i have come to love so much. After quite a few tries a was curious as to how my progress stacked up against the rest of the leaderboards.... Didnt compare too well to the top player but at least i was within the top ten. What can i say. Anyways while in need of some work PION has all the elements of a solid twin stick. Look forward to some content in the updates. Hats off the the devs!!
My friend recommended me this game, and after 5 hours played I'm already blown away by the sheer addictivity of the game. I have been playing alot of Binding of Isaac and was looking for another roguelike and this is fantastic! Despite a quite high difficulty level, it just makes you want to go in again, right after a run. Definitely worth the 15 euros, and hope this game will make it big!
Another small dev project abandoned unfinished with a forum full of dev promises for future content and additions that were not delivered. Too bad, because it definitely gives that feel that it could have been pretty cool with more made of it. Game has some charm in its weird, drifty movement and slow rotating to fire, but the fact that you and enemies both all have trouble moving and aiming, makes the game more like someone armed a bunch of balloons. Maps are narrow corridors, too, so enemies tend to clump up comically, bumping around shooting each other and generally not giving the impression of the "intelligent" enemies the store page promises. There are a lot of weapons, and they can be fun and novel to play with, and seem to have a good weight and impact to them. You also have several ships and pilots to pick from, which play noticeably differently. Ultimately, though, it feels like a novelty that needed to find direction beyond narrow hallways full of bumping enemies, and I'd only recommend it to people wanting something odd who are notably tolerant of its failings and prepared for its sluggish play. There are subtleties and scope for skillful play. If you play on controller, make sure to disable "show controller crosshair" which rather than merely showing a crosshair like it says, entirely changes the way you aim into an awful RS-cursor-pushing style that feels terrible. Unfortunate that you can't just have the crosshair and normal play, because your ship turns so slowly and wobbles back and forth so much that it really helps being able to see the point it's actually chasing. The ship already has a clearly drawn aim-line, so you don't need a crosshair for that. If you want crosshair and controller, you can do that with Steam Input, but the game's controller handling is pretty broken so you have to do everything on the kbm interface and manually remove your controller in the config every time you start the game.
This game is very fast with tons of action, i offen lose track of time, cause its so easy to take one run more.
I give this game my recommendation.
I still don't know why the developer thought the aiming system should move the camera with the reticle feels insanely awkward to just move the mouse. For some reason also, you can never get enough gold to buy a weapon/powerup/buff at the end of one level. It's a fun game with great mechanics and weapons that feel destructive that make up for the negative aspects. However, it still needs a bunch of work for optimizations, gameplay and fixes for the AI is crucial as they are seen blowing up their own buddies and running into walls. It's a one man work that is really well made, It has a lot of replayability but lacks style and originality. And for god sakes, tell the camera to STOP FOLLOWING MY MOUSE MOVEMENT.
Superb shooter, highly recommended.
