Wow! This game is so much fun! I really felt like a kid again playing it! I love indie games, and I love retro games! Pillars of Dust is both!!! Absolutely recommend it to anyone!!!
Tons of fun! I'll admit I'm a sucker for these kind of retro-style games, but it was definitely more than just a nostalgia trip. One thing I really enjoyed was the pace - the combat is nice and fast-paced and (and this makes all the difference) the characters' walking pace is nice and crisp, (which helps people like me who like to search every nook and cranny!) The whole "intersecting plots" thing was really cool as well!
Indie devs have an impossible job of trying to find the line between just how much of the classics to replicate and what to build upon, improve, and alter. Pillars of Dust really does a great job of correctly identifying those elements and it reflects in this SNES era RPG style with the modern quality of life improvements I desired for games of that time period. Pillars of Dust approaches turn based RPGs with an obvious flare of SNES era inspiration. The combat, story telling, sound, aesthetic, and even all the way down to the animation of NPCs really nails the early Dragon Quest feel for me. The game is minimalistic in the right ways. Retreaux does an incredible job with tailoring to a wide range of players with different styles in a way so subtle, the players don't ever feel like they're playing a "less correct" way. Do you want to beat the game quickly? It lends itself to that. Do you want to up the challenge, collect all the things, or take your time and enjoy story? It lends itself to that. Difficulty is in the hands of the players. No need for a "harder" setting because the team behind Pillars of Dust was able to fine tune the game in a way that the player's decisions impact the challenge they will face. This isn't an easy thing to do in an indie title - much less an RPG. Tons of collectibles, replayability in the way the character stories interact, and all the right notes from the classics we love with the correct amount of refinement that the players of these old games come to expect. The game is a deal at the price of purchase and I am excited to see the future of Retreaux Games projects.
Pillars of Dust is a near-perfect RPG, It nails the look and feel of classic games while infusing itself with modern humor and accessible mechanics. At 8-10 hours in length, it is good value for money, although i completed the game in 5 hours 45 mins on first run through, granted i did not search for everything. Pillars of dust is a well paced adventure that does not overstay its welcome, and I’ll likely replay it to experience the chapters in a different order. The graphics are charming and the music it harks you back to the era. if ur a strategically minded type, there’s a chance that the offense oriented combat will not appeal to you, as most of the time i found my self just using fight attack, but don't let that put you of, the game is well worth the asking price so get the game and go and get a nugget (reference to ingame currency)
Disclosure: I received a free review copy of this game. Pillars of Dust is an excellent retro-style RPG with an 8-bit aesthetic. It looks and sounds just like the 8-bit games it's paying homage to, but is much more streamlined and fast-paced. The graphics are simple, but have a lot of character. The chiptune music is excellently-composed and some of the catchiest I've heard in a very long time. The writing is witty and pokes fun at genre cliches. Combat is where the game really shines, with a well-balanced system that makes it so the player does not have to spend a significant amount of time on upkeep. You see enemies on the map, engage in combat, and unleash your best abilities. Unlike most RPGs, you can use your most powerful, AP-draining attacks guilt free since you recover completely after each battle. Bosses are particularly fun, with nearly every fight going down to the wire. This is a true gem of a retro-style RPG, and it should appeal to both fans of the games it's inspired by as well as more modern gamers.
A quick moving fast paced JRPG which goes straight to the point, ideal for JRPG lovers who are short on time. I loved the main characters, some of the jokes and the music, specially the battle and post-battle songs. Would definitely play a sequel (or a prequel!) Favourite supporter: Helga.
Pillars of Dust is a refreshing blast from the past - it hits the right notes for late-80s nostalgia, but it has all of the modern features you would expect from a turn-based RPG. The music is great and appropriately 8-bit, the graphics are endearingly simple and often funny (a giant eyeball wearing a top hat and a monocle!) and the dialogue is engaging and humorous. This game is definitely recommended for anybody who's looking for a light, fun RPG experience.
Very Enjoyable and Well worth your time. Disclosure *I received a free copy of this game as a Media Tester and reviewer. My opinion is my own and was not compensated in any way for a positive review* I have spent a good deal of time in this game and i have enjoyed every minuet of it. The classic turn based style brings back the good old days of real retro RPGs. The art style reminds me of old DOS games at times and Old NES games at others. The battles have feelings of Dragon Warrior/Quest and Final Fantasy Mystic quest, with one button move shortcuts the action is fast paced. The exploration to find all the secrets will have you hunting at every stage. The music tho. OMG THE MUSIC I LOVE IT. it has such a fresh feel. The sound effects and the battle themes make me feel like i am playing Final Fantasy Legend on the Gameboy. It is such a great game and is well worth even more then the price is asking. You dont want to miss out on this game. Do yourself a favor and put it in your library. You will not regret it.
As a gamer who remembers when Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy were new, this is delightfully reminiscent of those 8-bit era games. But this isn't just a retro knock-off; features like any-time saves, chapter goals, and unique and humorous story-telling ensure that your time with this game will be as entertaining as it is nostalgic.
Pillars of Dust is a very neat little RPG that doesn't take itself seriously, moves at a lightning fast pace and engages the player by incorporating secrets that they can find around every corner! If I had to define it, I would call this the first every J-Arcade-PG based on how quickly it moves and the scoring at the end of each chapter. This game, casually takes about 5+ hours to beat but replayability is high with how the two main characters can travel through the world in any way at your whim depending on what order you play the chapters on, which is free form! You can literally ignore one of the characters until the last chapter and THEN finish the game out with the other character to see how the world has been affected. I alternated myself. The combat is quick and snappy and doesn't ever feel like it overstays its welcome. For a paltry $6.99, why not give it a shot?
