Fun little ARPG. There's a light story to follow and plenty of townspeople to talk to, if that's your thing. The real meat is in the combat and various combat related systems. Combat is sort of like the old Shining Soul games. Maybe reminiscent of Secret of Mana, or maybe LoZ: Link to the Past, but with more RPG elements. Four character classes, each with a branching skill tree. Have only played mage, but there looks to be at least 3 distinct builds just from skill choices. Your stats passively go up as you level, and you gain a skill point each level to build how you want. It looks like you can respec your skill points whenever you want, so experimenting with different skills is easy. There's a crafting system using materials you get from harvesting nodes in dungeons/mob drops. Crafting levels up the more you do it, unlocking passive bonuses and more recipes. Gear has an array of RNG mods, so you can keep crafting until you get the perfect rolls for your class/build. Gathering a lot of materials is a bit grindy. Just nodes in dungeons that respawn when you reset or beat the boss, and some materials gained back from dismantling gear. There's also a monster card system where you collect monster cards and equip them for passive bonuses. The cards can also be leveled up. There's a pet system (8 available pets) that can support or enhance your playstyle, and various pet accessories that provide passive stat bonuses. All in all there's plenty of ways to customize or strengthen your playstyle, which is nice. Enough to be interesting but not so much to be overwhelming. The core gameplay loop is get quests in town -> unlock dungeon -> clear dungeon -> go back to town for more quests/main story -> unlock new dungeon -> clear dungeon, and so on. Combat is fun enough and the dungeons are short enough that it's easy to pick up and play for a short time, or get into grinding for a while if you enjoy that. Worth the asking price so far!
Philna Fantasy... Yes, I know: the name sounds suspicious, but don’t be fooled. This isn’t a cheap clone, but a fairly competent retro RPG, with pixel art, plenty of puzzles, and classic genre systems. The premise is intriguing but simple. While traveling aboard a spaceship, you end up crashing on a medieval fantasy planet full of monsters, warriors, and guilds. Basically, it’s an isekai. The crash wipes your memory, so at the beginning you simply help villagers using your combat skills. Over time, the story starts to unravel into something more interesting, including betrayals, supernatural threats, and an evil force seeking to devour the entire planet. It’s not an especially deep narrative, but it works well as an excuse to explore the map. This is a top-down action game, very much in the style of classic 2D Zelda. Combat is the core, and at the start you choose one of four classes: berserker, with close quarter combat; ranger, with long-distance combat; chronomancer; who uses magic and grimoires; and assassin, focused on attacking from the shadows. Each class feels distinct, with its own combos, extensive skill trees, and advantages or disadvantages against certain enemies, making each playthrough feel quite different depending on your choice. Combat is simple but dynamic. You need to manage mana/stamina (which works as one), read enemy patterns, dodge, take advantage of cooldowns, and react quickly. Bosses, in particular, felt varied, with unique mechanics and even some puzzle-like elements. That said, there is one important downside: your class is locked. If you want to try a different playstyle, you have to start a brand-new playthrough from scratch, which reduces variety and can feel tedious. Beyond combat, the game includes classic RPG systems such as gear crafting, enchantments, side quests, and even a pet mechanic where companions fight alongside you and even have their own gear and abilities. One interesting addition is a belt where you can slot cards from defeated enemies to unlock passive abilities or movement upgrades. During exploration and dungeons, you’ll find tons of puzzles, very much in the style of Golden Sun: levers, buttons, positioning, and logic challenges. They’re entertaining and mentally stimulating, although they sometimes interrupt the pacing. Luckily, most of them can be skipped if this is not your thing. Visually, the pixel art is quite pleasant, with a good variety of environments, colorful enemies, and expressive characters. The music does its job well; not particularly memorable, but serviceable. In short, Philna Fantasy is a solid and reliable retro RPG. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but all its systems work well together to provide a solid experience. If you’re in the mood for a classic, straightforward RPG with no complications, this could be for you.
Simply love it.
I didn't care for this one. It has an ambitious scope with poor execution.
