1987 A small Village somewhere in Germany. In a Room in the Basement of a little house. Candlelight. My young human Form sitting in Front of a Monitor. Playing my first Roleplay Game on a Amiga 500. Hours over hours. Addicted, tired, just ... one ... Dungeon. Only... one. The Triumph completing the Game after hours, no after weeks. And then few Years later ... the Floppy Disk was broken. Years went by. Until yesterday. I couldn´t believe my Eyes as i found by accident my childhood again. Welcome to PHANTASIE MEMORIAL SET ... no ...i have to correct it a little. Welcome to PHANTASIE III - THE WRATH OF NIKADEMUS! Oh my, i still remember the moment i beated Nikademus in 1988. Yes, it was PHANTASIE III that was my first Roleplay Game. I never Played PHANTASIE I and II. But now i have the Chance, because the PHANTASIE MEMORIAL SET got all 3 Parts of the original Trilogy. And yes, it is REALLY original. Back to PHANTASIE III. Evil Nikademus wants to take over the World of Phantasie and you have to stop him. Starting in the City of Pendragon you can create of Party of 6 Members. You have a wide Variety of Classes and Races to create a Group that works for you. A Minotaur Fighter? A Pixie Ranger? Human Priest? Lizzardman Thief? Everything is possible. You should balance your Group. I took 2 Fighter, 1 Ranger, 1 Thief, 1 Priest and 1 Wizzard. You can create more Characters anytime and change the group. It is easy with highlevel Character getting experience for new Characters. The World of Phantasie is very big, has many Citys and Dungeons, but also places like Inns. The whole Game is Turnbased, that goes for the Mapwalking and also for the Battles. When it comes to a Battle you see your Party below and the Monsters above. The Monsters are mostly in 2 Rows, what means that you have to decide between Melee and Ranged Attacks. As said before, have a balanced Group for this. You can also put your Characters in Rows (Front/Middle/Back), so don´t have your Magic Users in the Frontline. Winning Battles gives you Experience, Gold and Items. Nice Option, you can decide if your Group get the same Experience or if one or more Characters get more then ohters. That will help to decide who levels faster. In Battles you can loose Bodyparts and there are special Spells to restore them. A little Tip. Level the Priest at first faster then the others to get the HEALING III Spell, that can restore them. Remember, a thief with one Leg cannot fire a bow. Just an example. The higher leveled your Party is, the earlier you can explore more Regions on the Map, because the Monsters are getting more and more difficult. And there are many different Monsters also in mixed Teams. So, rise your Group, find Nikademus and decide in the End your Destinny. If you want to have a Journey to the Beginning of Roleplay Games, then PHANTASIE MEMORIAL SET is the right Choice. But beware, you have only one Savegame. Each time when you start the Game you have to load your Savegame and be carefull. If you start the Game and do accidently a saving instead of a loading your Savegame will be overwritten. Thanks God the Programm is asking each time if you are sure to do it. I was to fast today and i killed 3,6 Hours of Gaming, because i wasn´t carefull. in the Game you will find Event Stars. When you enter a Star there is a chance of a Password Query. And yes, this are the same then in 1987, you will need the Manual (that is also included) to find the right Words. In that Times they were inside to make it Piracy Software more difficult. You know what? After all that time, i still remembered the Answers, because they were limited. If you answered 2 times wrong, the Game stops. That is bad if you are in a Dungeon, because saving is only in the Citys. You have to restart your last Savegame. Yes, thats how we played many Years ago. XD PHANTASIE III is absolutly oldschool. Returning to it, felt like coming Home. I´ve made the same Characters with the same Names like so many Years before. This Characters i created in this Game i also used later in my Storys. Those who know me, know that i´m writing Storys and there is also an Anthology Book out there with a Story of mine. Well, PHANTASIE III did not only gave me playing fun, it also inspired my future. Thats why i like that Game so much. Dear Devs, if you are reading this, please implent the Amiga 500 Version, it is the best Version with wonderfull Graphics and a nice Title Tune i still remember. There are many Amiga Games out on Steam. Please. Make it happen. But thank you for returning the Phantasie Trilogy. Thanks. And thank YOU for reading. PS: If you need help in the Game, write me anytime. :-) [h1][url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/26335619-Adult-World-Gamers/] You like this Review? You want more? Though I have been a big fan of this series since I was introduced to Phantasie I in 1987, I cannot recommend this memorial trilogy. Phantasie 1: The DOS version included is inferior to the Commodore 64 version (which is what I'm most familiar with) in several ways including graphics and sound, as well as in difficulty. The monster mele damage is nerfed in the DOS version, making the game too easy. The C64 version is more challenging in that regard. Where the DOS version is superior is with mele turns: character attacks never get skipped whereas in the C64 version they occasionally do if a monster is on the opposite side of the screen from the attacking character. Also the menu in the DOS version is better, there are no spell numbers but rather names, unlike the C64 version, where the player must memorize spell numbers or constantly refer to the manual. I encountered an error in the final battle where the spell Summon Elemental failed to summon even though one was added to the party in town. It had worked before. Phantasie 2: I barely tried the included Apple II version. There is no town graphics, just a text menu and the outdoor graphics were very poor. I decided I would likely not enjoy this version and did not persue further. For these 2 versions, I recommend downloading the Commodore 64 emulator and getting those versions of the game. All this is available free online. Phantasie 3: The DOS version included is superior to the Commodore 64 version IMO because the C64 version graphics are limited to a much smaller window than Ph 1 & 2 and are poor in my recollection. Although the Amiga version graphics are superior, the DOS version is reasonable and plays well. The sound is pretty poor however. There is a hidden bug and that is that when a character dies, a healing 3 or 4 spell will bring them back to life if cast outside of combat with no loss of constitution. I think this is essential to know because the difficulty is much greater than Ph 1 & 2. In those games, it is possible to go the whole game without a character dying unless you fight Zeus or Pluto. In Ph 3, you will find characters will die a lot. Overall this title is the best of the 3. IMO, this series really needs a remaster similar to how InXile did for the Bard's Tale Trilogy, which I highly recommend.
I am a big fan of this series, I still own all the originals I bought for the AtariST in the late eighties. I long awaited, hoped, that someone, anyone would take these old titles and patch them/re-issue them for more modern systems. At last this happened... I thought. The games are really fun, if you can tame the interface. These are more than combat strategy than quest heavy RPG and that is fine. It's always fun to make your party of six grow and become insanely powerful by the end-game, and stick it up to the bad guy, whomever he might be, However in all honesty, I just cannot recommend this bundle. NOTHING was fixed, nothing was even given the slightest of facelift. It is still 4 colors, keyboard only control, the sound is the old PC sound of way back. At the very very least I was expecting graphics/sound uplift from the AtariST/Amiga versions of the game, the best ones for these titles, and a proper release of Phantasie II for DOS with the same aforementioned improvements. Phantasie II is an Apple II emulation built to work in windows (shake my head). Then came the lot of small bugs/outdated features still present and unfixed in these originals. In short -- I do not recommend this game. While it is good that this brings the titles to light to a newer audience (should they try it), and that importance CANNOT be understated, I feel this is a missed opportunity as far as the quality of said games. SQUARE ENIX and others have successfully remastered their games, changing very little except bringing them to par (say Final Fantasy Pixel remaster or The Bard's Tale bundle). I mean it's good if you want to try the titles for yourself without searching for the AtariST/Amiga version on the emulation scene, it's very cheap and easy to install and get right into it, but I would wait until and if they are remastered/ported from AtariST in full colors/sound/modern mouse and keyboard control, all three for windows at the very least. 2.5 out of 10 -- Absolutely no effort put into this Memorial Set and there is simply no reason to play this unless curious to see what the original on DOS looked like back in 1985, and don't get me started on the Apple II emulation for Phantasie 2.
When I played this series starting back in 1985, I played on the Commodore 64 and the graphics were better, not CGA, but the gameplay is sound, if you want a taste of how RPG games were in "Ye Olden Days" this is a good series to try.
A single developer Wizardry meets Ultima styled trilogy from the mid 80s left almost entirely in their original forms, and they feel a lot more like AD&D dungeon crawling than either of the above. First and third games are run off a well tuned dosbox. Second game is run off an Apple][ emulator. So its a little clunkier, but feels almost exactly like playing it on an old system apart from hearing the Apple's fans screaming at you. Once you get the hang of the UI, it moves very fast. Very difficult, but fun to play to this day.
I love the fact that I can play the worst version of Phantasie with the best being for the Amiga 500. The colors are off and you have to figure out on your own how to get the game to run on windows. The fact that they didn't even try to make it easy for you as the customer to play the game is the reason that I'm giving this a thumbs down. At least take a moment to help get this old game working right before you sell it.
They chose the worst system to emulate. The Atari ST had all versions of Phantasie - that should have been the target for emulation, not the PC-compatible with CGA.
A slice of my retro childhood in all it's glory. Was only ever able to source part 1 and 3 when I was a kid, so finally I'm able to play part 2! Haven't noticed any glitches or cycling issues during play. If you loved it then, you'll love it now.
This takes me back to 1986, my first CRPG on the C-64. I loved it then I love it now.
