one of my favorite games of all time HOLY MOLY!!!! i won't lie and say the mystery is the most complex thing in the world but its almost more fun that way? i've enjoyed watching this wonderful cast of characters interact and try to figure it out while still injecting humor and a lot of really touching moments throughout :) the music is phenomenal and is genuinely my favorite video game soundtrack of all time, and the combat is just predictable enough that you get the satisfaction of feeling cool and strong without it feeling boring :)

Really well written JRPG with story and characters interesting enough to power through rather boring combat and especially lackluster boss fights. Well worth getting
Gameplay
Game is split into two main parts - a classical RPG dungeon crawler and a time management life simulator. The core hook of needing to clear the dungeon in time, while managing your social links is quite engaging and definitely rather unique among video games - as time limits are rather unpopular usually. The dungeon crawling side of the game is definitely somewhat dated compared to what we are used to today. It definitely works really well at the start of the game, when your resources are limited, you haven’t seen each animation a hundreds of times and you are still discovering optimal strategies. However things eventually get rather stale, you are overflowing in money and thus also in healing and SP recharging items, normal encounters don’t usually pose a threat. But that’s a common problem for most turn based RPGs where you are expected to do some grind. Nice change of pace in the Hollow Forest dungeon which introduced special rules, not to mention had this subsistence mechanic, but aside from mid boss and boss most enemies in it were unfortunately rather weak. As for how the combat itself works you have a physical attack and 6 basic elements - wind, ice, fire, electricity, light, dark + later in the game almighty. While your characters can be specialized in multiple of these elements - depending on how they choose their personas, your other party members are usually strongly specialized in one, and maybe a bit in second one, or the rest of the skills are buffs/debuffs for you/enemies. Enemies then have some affinities to respective elements, which you can further change by using breaking skills onto them. Also before maxing Rise’s social link you need to discover these affinities manually. Like the number of skills, items are impressive, but as I wrote later on a lot of fights are rather trivialized - Yukiko can heal your entire party, remove all debuffs, so rest is just buffing attacks and then spamming attacks one after another. However despite your overwhelming power the game doesn’t let you feel powerful - the fights might be easy, but they take time, and that’s especially the case with boss fights. Most boss fights don’t have many truly special moves. Sometimes they prefer using magic of one element, some change it around, some have powerful moves that are charged a turn in advance. But almost always it devolves into using the same strategy - heal, buff, attack for minutes on end. You don’t feel powerful, you don’t feel like you are in any danger, you are just slowly draining a large HP pool. For the second part of the game - the life simulator it’s great. Most of the links are really well written, the stories they told are engaging and needing to optimize which links you do when, when you will level your skills and when you will clear the dungeons is interesting. And for it not to feel overwhelming you can count that on rainy days there will be essentially no SL to advance, so the scheduling gets a bit easier.
Story
I’ve started Persona 4 while knowing who the main culprit will be and how the story will resolve. This is definitely suboptimal, but even with the knowlange the story was interesting and there were turns/story beats I hadn't expected. While the story doesn’t advance that fast - it can’t as it needs to give you time to do the dungeon, advance social links, it doesn’t feel dragged out. Yes sometimes there is a bit of anime bs, but it didn’t detract that much. The main stars of the show are definitely the characters, and I would say the less you know the better. Each of them undergoes and interesting character arc, except Teddie, and even if we see the same motives repeated over and over it doesn't get jarring, except for Teddie. On second thought they should just remove that useless sex pest that does nothing except being annoying. Last great part is the setting. It captures the atmosphere of that era really well (Please can we go back.) and Inaba is a great backdrop. Much cozier setting then another big city. Also there are some controversial aspects to the story - in regards to certain LGTB motives. It’s not a deal breaker, but sometimes it gets me to roll my eyes. Overall the game is quite reasonable and one could even say progressive - since the motives here aren’t just a token inclusion to check a box. Not to mention it was originally a 2008 release in Japan - so the expectations were really low.
Conclusion
It’s an RPG, a long RPG with a setting that might not appeal to everyone. If the game doesn’t look appealing I don’t think it will change your mind - especially as the character development takes some time. But if it does, it’s a no brainer, especially in a sale.

Genuinely, the best game I have ever played. Characters are so likeable and their relationships with one another are so well written. Bosses and music are epic. Love this game.
Nota: 10/10.
