I'd LOVE to give 100 stars if Junpei disappeared from my screen forever.
Peak
I can't help but compare it to persona 5 which is a much more refined game. I understand that many things carried over from the original game and couldn't simply be changed. But since Atlus charges a full price for this remake, couldn't they at least try to improve obvious faults? I will separate my complains in 2 parts, what should have been addressed, and what is (probably) inherited from the original game and couldn't be changed. I can't say for certain, since I did not play the original. What should have definitely been changed: 1. Pacing is terrible. Barely anything happens in the game. You watch multiple repeating transition animations (kinda like "loading screens") between bits of boring dialogue and it feels like torture. The game is already very slow, it really doesn't need to be slowed down artificially. 2. I certainly did not expect the song from the trailer to be one of the 3 songs this game has. There's combat theme, tartarus theme, and velvet room theme. And I can't recall any other track. Not only the game is empty, it also tortures you with the same music on a loop. What is (probably) carried over from the original: 1. Tartarus exploration is very boring and repetitive. 2. The game is very stingy when it comes to SP restoration. Your means of restoring SP are very limited. 3. At the same time, the game denies you loot if you don't spend SP on a fight. You have to target weaknesses if you want to loot cards from the fight, and that means spending SP. 4. Even if you don't care about the loot, combat is very hard if you try to conserve SP. 5. Shadows and personas are completely separate and you can't uncover weaknesses by obtaining a persona, you have to try every single element on every single shadow to know their weaknesses. 6. Shadow designs are incredibly bad, There are barely any noticeable differences between them and they all use the same color palette. It's very hard to tell the direction they are facing, and consequently, it's very hard to ambush them. 7. For some reason all out attack doesn't work if someone on your team has a debuff, which is very weird, because it works if they are dead. 8. A lot of mechanics that make combat in persona 5 enjoyable are missing, but that's to be expected. All of the above takes the fun out of tartarus exploration, there are no options you can use in combat, and between fights you have to look at the same tartarus corridors again and again.
Nice game
The gameplay is fine, however if that is what you want there are other persona or even shin megami tensei games that does it better. Everything else this game does poorly, the story is bad, and the cast is horrible. So many activley unlikable characters, and so many wastes of space. Why am i drinking coffe with a kid, why am i taking a dog to the movies, i will never know. Why i am doing 80% of the things i am doing because i sure dont want to hang with the people in this game.
Genuinely life changing
