"Path of the Sramana" is a student project from VIA University in Denmark. It's a 2D retro platformer, but not one of the worst on Steam. The instructors wisely informed the students that lazy pixelcrap is unacceptable for game publication in the 21st century, so the game features some quite decent hand drawn art and animation which makes this visually okay, despite still only being in 2D (reminder... the ATI Rage hit the mainstream in 1995... no excuses for using 2D in this era of gaming). The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this.
The animation in this game is incredible, truly fine design. I just wish I was able to get further through the game to see the rest of the world. Bugs make this game very difficult to run through. Also, I wish it was more compatible with a controller instead of just keypad.
Game's: - boring - there are no settings - the playable character's animation are like 3 fps - The story might as well not exist - The platforming is awful - The terrain hitboxes are annoying af

Nice

The controls are _infuriatingly_ buggy (plus the game claims that the movement is WASD but it's actually arrow keys and there's no option to change that), and it's very short, under an hour even if you spend a lot of time failing at everything like me. BUT the art is very beautiful, the character designs are peak, and the voice acting was mostly nice. And well, it's free so I guess you get what you pay for. The game just needs a little bit finetuning to be a good but short experience.
