Paradise Killer

Paradise Killer is weird. Extremely weird. When you start out, basically nothing makes sense. By the end of the game things will make their own sort of sense, but they will never stop being weird. The story is a murder mystery, but don't expect a whole lot in terms of puzzles or deductions. The gameplay is really more of a collectathon. Run around from point A to point B, talk to people to advance the story, and pick up various collectables along the way. Only a few times will the game expect more of you than just looking at everything on the map. But even if the gameplay is a bit more simplistic and repetitive than I would prefer, the overall experience ends up being so unlike anything else that it's hard to be too critical.

Do you love Killer Seven. Do you love Deadly Premonition. Do you love Silver Case. Do you want dark souls lore on miami beaches. Do you love adventure games, murder mysteries, demons, blood, and bisexual plus sized women with genuine Noir Detective type personality problems. Welcome to Paradise. 11 hours was enough to fall in love for me. this is my 9.9 game I never stop talking about. This could be YOUR 7 out of 10 playstation 1 game nobody's ever heard of but I want everyone to hear about it. My favorite LP of one of my favorite games begins with the words "Do you ever feel like a game was made just for you?" This game made me feel that way. Except it's even better then that, because it wasn't made just for me. It was made for and by kaizen game works, and I'm just lucky enough to be along for the ride while they're making things.

In the realm of investigation games there are very few that I feel actually do the genre justice. In my experience most games will feel either extremely clunky with cobbled together mechanics, too restrictive in the freedom they give the player to come to their own conclusions (and to fail if those conclusions are wrong), simply uninteresting from a story perspective, or a combination of all of these. Paradise killer is not any of these things. Paradise killer is a love letter to 90s vaporwave aesthetics that provides a true mystery that the player can solve in whichever way they see fit. The characters are well written and the mytery branches and twists in ways that will continuously shock you as the game progresses. For these reasons paradise killer exists as one of the few investigation games I have ever taken the time to completely finish. Now that my playthrough is at an end I can confidently say that I am happy to have been able to have the expereince that this game provided me and would recommend that anyone with remotely any interest in this games genre or aesthetics plays it to support the incredible developers responsible for it.

Genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, a very fun and unique game with a storyline that will make you want to play nonstop. I've 100%ed this game twice (Once a few years ago on PlayStation and recently on PC) and I've never regretted spending my free time on it. I also suggest checking out Kaizen Game Works' other game Promise Mascot Agency, which is just as amazing as this one.

Game keeps crashing on Steam Deck with an Unreal Engine exception error popping up. I want to recommend game. I was enjoying it fine, but I cannot unless they fix the game and make it bare minimum playable.

Man ♥♥♥♥ me. This game came out in 2020 and feels like it is still ahead of its time. This is probably the BEST detective game I have ever played. It forces you to think through theories, and the set up is good enough that you have to do the one thing that detective games always fail to do: theorise. Even when you have all the evidence, it is not just a simple obvious answer as to the motives and mechanics of what happened. The lore is also incredibly eerie. And you can easily call the game "vaporwave" which is true. But this really is the first game that seriously tries to imagine not just what a vaporwave aesthetic would look like, but a vaporwave world, lore, story and characters. It is bizarre in the best possible way. This joins look outside as a game that does "eldritch horror" in a unique way, not just in terms of lore but in terms of the feeling it is trying to get you to feel. Most detective style games are in truth narrative games with an overall mystery. Here, we have a true detective game with a cool story. I really strongly recommend this.
