It pains me a lot to give this game a negative review, especially when I am really into its 90s art. When we talk about arts, this game is one of the best, I can assure you that. Each character's voice makes the game more appealing. However, besides these, everything else is garbage. First of all, the game is made to be played repeatedly. Only 1 true ending and numerous alternative (mostly bad) endings. So, you are forced to go through the exact same dialogue over and over again. It's completely fine to go over the same dialogue to reach each ending if the rewards (endings) are worth the time; sadly, they are not. The rewards (endings) await your efforts are just a stupid white page with different texts; DOES NOT EVEN HAVE PICTURES! For those who have not played the game yet, each ending is like "Oh, you failed and the girls hate you" or "Oh, you were too shy and ran away leaving the girl with confusion", something like this, BUT ONLY THE TEXT! It would be better to put more effort and add pictures! Additionally, in a text-based game like this, the writing is very crucial. Misspellings or incorrect word usage can significantly disrupt the experience and should not be allowed. Sadly, this game makes that happen.

Tired of games that need guides.
Bad game design is when you need a guide to complete the game. Grim Fandango was one of those games. A lot of the puzzles made absolutely no sense and even after I looked up some of them I tended to wonder how the hell was anyone supposed to figure that out other than doing so accidentally. Playing (most of) Half Life, which doesn't tell you where to go or what to do, you realize that it's not the players that are the issue it's the game developers. That game knew how to balance you figuring out what to do while not telling you where to go. You'll never complete a section and feel like you weren't given enough information to figure it out on your own. Pantsu Hunter is one of those games where a lot of the ways to get certain endings were ridiculous and made no sense. Sit on a chair and die or fall into the bath and drown. You need two unrelated items to get a panty somewhere in another room. After a few of those it just became tiring. If the writing was good I might've stuck with it but it feels like it reads from a high schooler's fan fiction. If it was trying to be ironic it would've worked but it was trying to be totally serious sometimes with that awful writing. I will say that the artwork and marketing of this game is top notch. The developer at least knows how to publish a game properly.
WHAT A MASTERPIECE IS THIS? This is a game where we choose a slightly different option each time and get a new ending. I absolutely adore this genre and have played several similar ones, but they were all detective or story-driven. And here is a romantic novel about an ordinary guy who can do everything. Our main passion is girls' panties. So, with each of them, in addition to helping around the house, we'll hunt for their underwear. And there are so many endings, almost a hundred. Each one is more hilarious than the last. For such a low price, we get a game that you just want to play over and over again. I highly recommend giving it a try, you won't regret it. ABSOLUTE CINEMA ✋😐🤚
Pantsu Hunter: Back to the 90s, developed and published by Golden Wave Games, is a visual novel and point-and-click adventure that aims to evoke nostalgia for the anime and pop culture of the late 1980s and 1990s. Released in early 2019, the game follows Kenji Kojima, a young man who moves to the city to attend university without the support of his parents. To survive and navigate urban life, he takes on odd jobs while pursuing a rather unconventional quest for romance. The game centers on Kenji’s interactions with four distinct female characters, each representing different personality archetypes: a bubbly sweetheart, a sporty tomboy, a shy introvert, and an aloof beauty. The narrative weaves through these encounters, offering multiple story paths and endings based on player choices. The gameplay in Pantsu Hunter combines point-and-click exploration with visual novel storytelling. Players engage with various environments, solve puzzles, and make dialogue choices that shape Kenji’s relationships and the story’s outcome. Puzzles vary in complexity, ranging from basic object interactions to more intricate challenges, such as repairing electronic devices or memorizing sequences in the environment. While some tasks are straightforward and intuitive, others require significant trial and error, often forcing players to repeat sections to succeed. This design can be both rewarding for those who enjoy puzzle-solving and frustrating for those who prefer more guided progression. Visually, the game captures the look and feel of 90s anime with attention to detail and character design. Environments are carefully crafted, featuring retro elements such as CRT televisions, cassette players, and other nostalgic props that reinforce the time period. Character sprites are expressive, with subtle animations like blinking or blushing that enhance the emotional resonance of interactions. The soundtrack complements the visuals with light, MIDI-inspired compositions that evoke the tone and atmosphere of classic shoujo anime, reinforcing the game’s nostalgic appeal. However, Pantsu Hunter is not without its criticisms. The premise, which revolves around evaluating women based on their underwear to understand their personalities, has been considered uncomfortable and off-putting by many players. This theme can overshadow the narrative and make the story feel tone-deaf to modern sensibilities. Additionally, the trial-and-error nature of many puzzles, combined with the lack of hints or guidance, can make gameplay tedious, especially for players who are more interested in the story than repeated trial sequences. These issues contribute to a mixed experience, balancing charm with frustration. Overall, Pantsu Hunter: Back to the 90s is a game that leans heavily into nostalgia, appealing to players who appreciate retro aesthetics, period-specific humor, and a lighthearted, anime-inspired narrative. Its expressive art, charming environments, and character-driven storytelling provide an immersive throwback experience. Yet, the game’s unusual premise and sometimes frustrating puzzle design limit its broader appeal. For those interested in exploring a quirky, nostalgic visual novel with a distinctly 90s flavor, Pantsu Hunter offers a unique, if imperfect, journey into a stylized, retro world. Rating: 8/10
