Pantry Raid is a frantic and charming culinary defense game where you take on the role of a tiny chef defending your kitchen kingdom from a literal swarm of pests. It takes the tower defense genre and shrinks it down to a countertop scale turning everyday kitchen appliances and ingredients into clever tools of destruction. Your goal is to keep your precious food supplies safe from waves of hungry ants beetles and even the occasional persistent mouse. The gameplay is fast paced and requires quick thinking as you place specialized traps and units across the tiled floors. I loved the creativity in the arsenal; you aren't just building generic towers but using things like pepper grinders to slow enemies or toaster launchers to blast them back. Managing your resources feels like a stressful shift in a busy restaurant as you scramble to earn enough crumbs to upgrade your defenses before the next rush starts. The level design makes great use of the environment with obstacles like spilled honey or hot stove burners adding tactical layers to your placement. Visually the game is a treat with a bright and cartoonish aesthetic that makes the insects look surprisingly full of personality even as you are trying to stop them. The kitchen settings are detailed and nostalgic featuring giant boxes of cereal and towering refrigerators that make you feel truly small. It has a lighthearted tone that masks a genuine challenge as the enemy pathing becomes more complex and the bosses require specific strategies to defeat. The progression system keeps you coming back for more shifts by unlocking new recipes and gadgets that allow for different playstyles. Whether you prefer a heavy offensive setup with explosive salt shakers or a more defensive approach with sticky syrup traps the game rewards experimentation. It is a perfect pick up and play experience that captures the high energy chaos of a kitchen nightmare. 8.5/10. It is a delicious twist on the defense genre that serves up plenty of fun and a side of healthy frustration. If you enjoy games that test your multitasking skills while keeping a smile on your face this raid is worth joining. Grab your spatula set your traps and make sure nothing leaves your kitchen alive.
A solid start to what could be a really great game, Pantry Raid is an fps rouge-like and does fairly well, it just really needs fleshing out. There are very limited rooms, finding yourself repeating them after one run, mobs spawn in the rooms in the same position each time so this makes it more of a memory game than a reacting game, but I do see a solid baseline. Weapons felt nice, the cooking different meals for buffs was a nice spin on the rouge-like aspect rather than just getting a 1 of 3 selected power up like most. Id say while it remains free, its worth taking a look at. Difficulty ☐ Tell My Wife I L... ☐ Engage the gamer position ☑ A Chill Challenge ☐ Are we still on the tutorial? ☐ Easier than regretting the amount of hours I have on Dota After my first 2 runs the difficulty significantly dropped as I learnt the spawn patterns and would pre fire the areas, some balancing is definitely needed as you progress as well as a proper boss fight rather than just buffed larger versions of basic enemies to keep this challenging. Enjoyment ☐ Absolute euphoria ☐ Worth your time ☑ Its aight ☐ Beats day time TV ☐ Ayoo there's paint drying over there For the time I played I enjoyed it, would I go back in its current state....I don't think so, but as a free title to play for one sitting then why not, I did a full run with each weapon available and chased some of the achievements in the 2.7 hours I played so this wouldn't be that much of a time sink to try out. Quality ☐ Even better than oddly satisfying hydraulic press videos at 2am ☐ B-E-A-Utiful ☐ No complaints ☑ Janky but manageable ☐ GET THE BUG SPRAYYYYYYY Heres where I was a bit annoyed, on smaller games like this I tend to just go for the 100% achievements as normally they arnt to far fetched and you get a full feel for the game in doing so, I did multiple runs with each weapon(including a no weapon run) and was not awarded the achievement, I purchased every recipe on 4 separate times and did not gain the achievement and I also did 3 runs where im fairly certain I took no damage and didn't get that achievement either. The larger units can spawn and immediately hit you if you are within their range which for me felt more of a oversight/bug as I feel there should be a grace period on them spawning for you to react, I restarted my no hit run multiple times due to one room spawning a larger tomato round the corner which upon spawning in the room it immediately turns around the corner and you are hit. That being said if it wasn't for the fact I was trying to 100% the game achievements I wouldn't have ran into any of these issues, the core game plays well. All in all in its current state the game is mid, with some updates that include bug fixes and balancing, I would take another look, but right now for 2 hours or so it will keep you entertained but not much afterwards.

"Pantry Raid" is an unusual, genuinely (but perhaps somewhat jokingly) made action RPG, but with a twist, everything is reskinned to look like a cooking themed RPG. Is this a good idea? No. Did anyone actual ask for this? No. Is this a hidden genre that's just been waiting for the moment to burst on the scene and product hundreds of different cooking themed RPGs and millions of dollars of revenue? Nope. What do you do in the game? It's a crappy and shallow (for an RPG) die-and-retry "roguelike" (and remember, "roguelike" is something amateur developers love because they think it's an excuse not to do any game development work) dungeon crawler (the dungeon is a pantry, whatever). Go on repeated runs into samey, repetitive procgen rooms. Yawn. The graphics aren't great, somewhat low poly, cartoony assets... much better than an asset flip or pixelcrap, but at the same time, far below the standard that's expected from modern, professional PC games. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. Most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's usually some kind of monetisation, from nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, to any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? I think you should give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
This has good potential for future development! I liked what I played regardless of if I knew what I was even doing sometimes. the pea shooter is cool, the rat is too loud.
