Pakicetus is a deep-sea rogue-lite exploration game. As captain of the Salvation, you must balance resource collection, system upgrades, and a dwindling food supply as you battle against an unknown enemy bent on stopping your search for a new home.

This is an unfinished student project. While it's not quite as broken as some of the other reviews claim (you can actually get the weapons to work and upgrade your ship), it's still not actually any good. You just float in a direction, gather resources and vaguely aim your weapon tubes towards enemies (and it autofires for you). The tutorial is completely broken, you have to guess what buttons do what until you get them right and then you just wander a mostly empty water area shooting fish or hovering over gather spots watching numbers go up while you collect resources. Even if this had been finished, the story isn't very good, the voice acting is amateur hour and the lack of vertical movement and slow pacing just cripple any enjoyment you could have even attempted to have. --- While you are here, would you consider following my curator page? Want to read all of my reviews and not just the curated ones?
Visually this game is reasonably interesting. The lighting is unique and the CGs are well made. The game starts out with an interesting backstory cut-scene, but the experience is ruined by aggressive screen-shake and stuttering. The tutorial seems incomplete and lacks features such as a pause menu and any audio. The game itself was a challenging experience. The controls were very sluggish and maneuvering was extraordinarily frustrating. Additionally most of the controls and UI are poorly explained and confusing. Without hand-holding from a developer friend, there is absolutely no way I would have completed this game. In-fact during my first play-through, I failed due to starvation and upon trying the game again all my resources, audio, objectives, and pause menu were broken! This required a game restart where once again, I had to fix my settings, sit through the stuttery cut-scene, and re-raise the volume sliders in the main game. The game premise and lore are very interesting and educational; however, they tie into the core mechanics poorly and I feel most of the design choices could use improvement. Given further development, this game could be a decent experience, but as it stands, lacks engagement. Props to the team for the unique game concept though!
Pakicetus cons: lack of instructions. guns don't fire. upgrades don't work. requires resources or game over. sucks.
Needs work. Has promise but the game mechanics are currently trash. You just float around and collect resources and watch your turrets fail you.

"Pakicetus" looks promising, but this student project from the University of Idaho unfortunately underdelivers on a not unreasonable premise. I suppose we should be quick to point out that this game has nothing to do with pekicetus, the cute little dog thing that went back into the ocean and evolved into whales. What do you do in the game? The idea of this game is, perhaps a little bit like a shallow version of Sunless Sea meets Aquanox, only with slightly worse graphics and much, much shallower gameplay. You explore the ocean, collect resources, and autobattle against enemies... but it's just lacking any depth (geddit, ocean, depth, har). It's not fun to play, it's a clunky and sadly uninteresting mess despite the almost reasonable looking graphics. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Visually, this game is quite interesting. The lighting is unique and the computer graphics are well done. The game's premise and story are very interesting and informative; however, they don't connect well with the main mechanics, and I think most of the design choices could be improved. With further development, this game could be a worthwhile experience, but it lacks engagement in its current form. But thanks to the team for the unique concept of the game!
The tutorial is broken, guns fire automatically, and there seems to be very little story. The game does seem to be possibly unfinished as some other reviewers have said but if it is true then i hope the devs can keep working on their skills and make better games in the future.
