This game offers a clever concept that works similarly to gun overheating. You fill up the 4-stage bar at the top of the screen by holding the fire button and shooting bullets. Each stage you achieve provides you a temporary boost, such as increased fire speed or damage. When you let go of the fire button, though, the bar decreases and you lose the perks you've earned. The goal of the game is to get to the fourth stage while keeping your fire speed under control. Your ship loses one health if you load the bar all the way to the end. Because it's easy to forget in the heat of battle, the game will change colors and slow down the music to remind you to release the button. The basic game mode is called "standard," and it requires you to complete 12 stages. Stages are chosen by clicking on cards that show a random goal and difficulty level. The most common goal is to clear the level of all enemies, but there are a few surprises, such as "shield," which makes enemies resistant to your bullets until you remove the one red adversary that works as a shield for others. There is an unique "heal" card that gives you a few additional hit points and allows you to skip the next stage. However, choosing that card could be highly risky because you will miss out on the opportunity to boost your stats. With only the base stats, defeating a boss on the 6th and 12th stages is extremely difficult. Stages are small, and you won't be damaged if you hit the wall. Red bullets that bounce off walls are the only thing you need to keep an eye on. The good news is that your bullets bounce off as well. It's not uncommon to find yourself in a bullet-hell situation where you need to dodge a rain of bullets. After completing a stage, you can select one of three available upgrades. These have a rarity rating that is indicated by stars and color. The red 4-stars upgrade is what you want. Red upgrades, unlike the lower upgrades, are permanent and stay with you even if you die. Death does not end your current run unless you exit to the main menu. You can restart it with all of the red upgrades you've accumulated thus far. If you make it through all 12 stages, you'll get a prestige point, which unlocks new modes and other goodies. Prestige points boost your multiplayer score and provide permanent perks to both you and your opponents. The final item you obtain is a modifier, which makes the game more difficult and increases your score multiplier. They're ideal for record seekers.

Enjoy!
Good for fast twin stick sessions. Kathleen Turner approved. (7/10)
! I N C R O Y A B L E ! Du rythme, de la castagne, des effets sonores, une OST magnifique. Foncez !
-Mildly fun at times, but incredibly unbalanced and half-assed in many ways. -Many of the "survival" rooms can be easily cheesed by just standing behind a wall for 30 seconds. Makes me think the game was barely tested at all. -Your runs can be extremely difficult or insanely easy depending on how lucky you get with perk selection. -Speaking of perk selection, there is often little choice to be had. You are presented with 3 options and you just pick the one with the biggest health or damage increase. An extremely underdeveloped feature. -The OST is actually a banger tho ------------ Overall not a terrible game tbh, but compared to the other games in the genre such as Geometry Wars or Monolith, this game is just not worth playing and feels incredibly rushed.
I'm reviewing Steam games in alphabetical order and you can watch my review here: https://youtu.be/2nEMMCHvlOA Prefer to read? Overdrive is an interesting genre mash-up of bullet-hell, twin-stick shooter and roguelike mechanics. Unfortunately, for every thing the game does right, it also does something wrong. It boils down to the upgrade system not having enough meaningful choices that add to the gameplay experience. It's a great idea for a progression system, but having to choose between 3 identical upgrades where the only difference is that one has higher numbers than the others does not make for engaging or empowering player choice. If the upgrade system was reworked, more level variety and bosses added, this game could be something great. As it stands, it's a missed opportunity.
I had the opportunity to discover the next game from the same developer (Project Operator) at Strasbourg's Indie Game Contest and I wanted to give a try to this first title. For this price, I would just say go! Get ready for very efficient (and addictive) gameplay mechanics. I wanted to test it for 10 minutes and oops, 1 hour was gone lol A special mention to the sound design and the excellent soundtrack!
Simple mais vraiment profond et fun!
Nice game, i really liked it and for such a price i have had far more than what i expected.
