Ay Caramba, this game is trash. It's a platformer that doesn't support gamepad. Controls feel floaty, laggy, & unresponsive. Level design is bland. Animations are poor. The music is fire though. And I love tacos ... but save your money and buy a taco (not from Taco Bell). Rate 2.5/10. Glad I got this very cheap on a bundle or I'd be upset.
"Carlos the Taco" is a Russian "template" flip. The "developer" filled out a basic template in the craptastic GameMaker Studio (a blight on gaming), changed the name/reskinned a couple of things, and put it on Steam as if it was their own game. The developer decided to skin their template flip with some low res/pixel Mexican sprites and things, so on top of insulting gamers with this basic asset flip tier scam, and with their blatant review manipulation, they're also being horribly racist at the same time. Nice going. This is a painfully bad platformer with generic mechanics (straight off the Yoyogames "How do I make a platformer" tutorials/guides), but at least you can double jump. Otherwise this is indistinguishable from all the other asset/template flipped GameMaker Studio platformers infesting Steam and making gaming worse for everyone. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The game features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", VICTORIA Games has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 11 players, and these were all the reviewer accounts that the developer paid for to write the fake reviews for the game. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. They're all written in either Russian or broken English, appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and the accounts are used consistently to write fake reviews for asset flips and other cash grabs/scams. The "Positive" review score on this game should be disregarded due to this blatant, unethical review manipulation. This is done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product. "Carlos the Taco" carries the scam price of a whopping $5 USD for what's basically an asset flip, and it's not worth it.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
This pointless breach of Valve's guidelines for developers here demonstrates a couple of things. First, the developer didn't read my review, because nowhere did I suggest they stole any of the crap pixel "art" they used to reskin this GameMaker Studio platformer template. Secondly, the "developer" shows how little they know about game development. A remarkable display of ignorance from the "developer" behind this trashware. This game contains no "assets". Like, nothing. It doesn't exist? What a joke. The crap pixel "art" the developer crapped out on this trash counts as assets. Assets they (probably) made themselves, but nowhere did I say they weren't responsible for this racist trash imagery. They seriously think that the only assets that comprise a game are visual, and don't understand their construction kit/engine template copy + paste job, using someone else's game mechanics and core engine without crediting the actual designers, isn't effectively the same as flipping visual game assets or stealing audio tracks. Now, we all know games are always made using various stock elements and libraries (also known as assets), but an ethical developer would declare and acknowledge use of other people's components in a game. The developer here hasn't, and now denies they did... which truly does show they intended to mislead gamers into thinking every asset in the game was their work, including GameMaker Studio itself, which is the intellectual property of Yoyogames. Taking the work of others and claiming credit for it, with the intention of misleading games for profit, well, that's highly unethical.
Can't remap keys/joystick. No d-pad support. Jump button is up on joystick. No consistency with enemy death (number of shots) Can't fire and jump at the same time. Character is far too floaty. This thing is an early access trainwreck. On the plus side, the music is nice.
I liked the musical accompaniment.
Зачем здесь пауза?
Неплохая и короткая игра, которую при желании можно пройти за один присезд и меньше чем за час. P. s. Норм я так урвал за 30 рублей.
Very playable game!
