Sinopsis

"Out of Line" is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. In fairness, this Nintendo Switch ported handheld platformer is far from the worst on Steam, and doesn't even feature terrible pixel "art", there's no prizes for being fairly tall for a midget. This puzzle platformer features some handcrafted art and has puzzles that revolve around simplistic physics and other activities, as well as a somewhat whimsical story. Such a concept might work if presented with extremely high quality 3D visuals and gameplay, but this is a Nintendo Switch game here on Steam. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The 2D artwork here is middling at best, a hodge-podge of amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets, and isn't of sufficient quality to make up for the other defects in the game. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? "Out of Line" has the greedy, cash grab price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $8 asking price for this game could get you games like "Fallout: New Vegas", "Borderlands 2" or "Warhammer: Vermintide 2". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Out of line isn't the best puzzle platformer ever but it's another good one to play if you like the genre like me. The spear throwing gimmick is used throughout the game in some clever albeit basic puzzles. There's glimmers of brilliance sprinkled inbetween and later puzzles have a nice difficulty curve. But it's not the sort of puzzle game where every challenge is unique such as INSIDE. Still though it's a game worth playing if only because of the beautiful hand painted art style. The world is unique and has some memorable setpieces as well as a good ambience thanks to solid sound design. Music wasn't the most inspiring and neither was the story but for the runtime it had, it left me satisfied. The asking price is fair for what you're getting so i'm giving it a well deserved thumbs up!
Short game, definitely worth a buy. It's largely a pretty chill game with a few bursts of "Ruuuunnnn, run little guy!" I enjoyed the art and the backgrounds a lot, I enjoyed the critters and the music. My main gripe came in the javelin. It really feels like a few areas it was made inaccurate. When going up the elevator, for instance, I was able to hit everything without a problem until ONE area where I just kept throwing and missing somehow even when standing RIGHT next to it before getting killed. There were a few other times where I was literally standing right under something, the aim line showed where it would go - and it missed. Like the only way to miss was intentional for some of them. Speaking in the line of inaccuracies: The chains. I could stand next to the chain and keep hitting X button to attach and it just WOULD not. It would do the animation and then not attach. THAT was actually frustrating. That said, overall: It was fun. I kept asking why my friend wouldn't just carry me or help me, or at least give me their cooler javelin, but overall it wasn't super needed. There isn't much else really to complain about, it was overall a very enjoyable little romp. For $8 I'd say it's worth it for 2.5 hours. On sale is a Yes with both thumbs up. It was a cute little game.
Out of Line is a 2D Puzzle Platformer about a creature that finds itself awoken in a world and is lost looking for a way back, meeting different allies on the way to help on its journey. The game offers multiple stages full of puzzles and platforming sections for you to solve, your main ability is a spear that you can throw around activating gears, buttons and even use it to a wall to jump even higher distances. The game was short and simple with tight controls and mechanisms that were fun to use, difficulty slightly picks up at later stages in the game but nothing that cannot be handled, you will meet enemies and allies who will provide support along the way to overcome some of these puzzles. OST and music were calming to match the vibe of the game. The game consists mostly of chase and escape sequences plus the final boss of the game, after all it's a puzzle platformer genre. It's highly recommended for those who love puzzle platformers and it was quite fun finishing and traversing as well. Overall Rating 9/10
Such a beautifully crafted game! The art was fantastic, and the music was well done. Also loved the puzzles and the many different types we got to encounter. There was a minor bug where the chains(?) wouldn't latch on to the character and would have to click the right mouse button a few times before it did. Another one I did encounter (where I had to quit to the menu and return back into the game) where one of the bugs refused to go into one of the holes.
Oui !
