About

After awakening in an inn with no memory, you find yourself in a sleepy little forest town. Within minutes you are chosen by the townsfolk to help restore this beautiful little town to it's former glory. Why? An ancient vampire has awakened, and kidnapped the local townsfolk. There's no barkeep. No innkeeper. Not even a shopkeeper. What's a small town to do?

Each season you will journey into the Vampire's Forest and rescue the kidnapped townsfolk. As you advance through the story, the seasons will change. And the town will grow around you. Harvest resources in the woods. Train your fighting skills. And restore the town to it's former glory. Because you have become, Our Town Hero.

Our Town Hero is a retro RPG that could be described as cozy. It's being designed to evoke a nostalgic feeling, with graphics and music that would fit on a Game Boy Color or SNES. But with modern touches and up-to-date gameplay. One of the central themes of the game is the changing seasons. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall will bring some new weather, decor, and life to your town. The game begins in winter, with your town mostly quiet. Times are bleak. The businesses are closed due to the kidnappings. But by the end, you will hopefully have a thriving and bustling town by years end. You will be the reason this town comes alive once more.
You'll get to know the townsfolk, see how they change through the different seasons, and how they react to you as each villager is rescued. You'll also be able to help them rebuild their businesses, and the forest is thriving with items to harvest.

You'll be able to choose your character's gender, name, along with the names of the town and kingdom you are waking up in. This will be your individual journey in this retro gaming world. Other features will be added as I continue development.

Our Town Hero will feature a retro soundtrack. MIDI's in fact. I love music that evokes that bygone era in gaming. Especially music that reminds me of GBA games. The music will also vary and change for each season.

This game is far too quick for my liking, the plot is shallow, the amount of actual impact you have is ridiculously low, and the battles come hot and heavy (I got one averaging every 3 to 4 steps). The battles themselves were not complex, just use the same ability over and over. A bot could have run this game as well as I, and gotten the exact same result.
I have backed a lot of kickstarter games in my days but this has to be one of the most disappointing unfortunately. It seems like a lot of care went into the art style and almost nothing else. The combat was poorly balanced with most enemies dying in one turn and then giving the same experience as every other mob. There was not really anything to differentiate mobs between each other outside of sprite and name. And boy howdy will you see a lot of them because the encounter rate is high. Also the only treasure in the game is money so that you can purchase healing items that I never seemed to need and stat upgrades that were super expensive. I tried to turn in a quest after beating the boss and it the npc who had given it to me had left town so I was stuck with 10 items i could not turn in. All in all, its pretty, its cute but it is not a very good game.
Let's me start by letting you know that the pixel art is charming, if inconsistent (sometimes a sprite looks like good snes work, sometimes bad snes work, and then sometimes it looks like nes work instead), and the music is top notch - really chill, really great - I cannot say enough nice things about it. But really, thats where all the nice words end, and as someone who backed the game, I swear that either that is where ALL the money went, or this was a scam game (something finished or mostly so at first, and then pushed onto Kickstarter to grab as much cash as possible. Why - everything else here is amazingly shallow, it feels like the start of early EA, or like a demo you give publisher only to show the bare bones - a horizontal slice or sorts. Even putting it that way would be putting it too nicely, and it goes beyond that too. For example(s), there are even character close up images for the dialogue box that don't load, so you just get black silhouettes. As well, you have no door in some places, just arrows pointing at a wall, or bars pasted over a wall but somehow your character is talking through bars AND a wall to people on the other wise who don't even run across the room to talk to you. But back onto what IS finished - its literally as shallow as you can get it. Your love interest's name and gender are chosen before you even play, and they just claim to like you upon first meeting you. There is the town, which is basic nes rpg basic, and then one random "dungeon" to the south that is laid out like something of a maze. That's basically the whole game. Sure, there are some side dungeons, at one at least, but that's barely different in layout than the primary one you must go into each season. Also, each season is a pallet swap. I don't really need to go on - you can read other negative reviews that explain why the combat and levelling are terrible, and how the relationships are kind of automatic and pointless. Also, the story is basically on rails, so things progress the same for everyone - not even much or any choice about who you rescue, but even if that opens up a bit later, it doesn't really mean anything. So, this shop is opened on "season" sooner. That's not much, as a season progressed after a single main dungeon run (unless you keep going back to town, but there is not much reason for that. What a disappointment - I basically lit $30 on fire via Kickstarter. This game is not even worth $4.99 (current asking price). You know, if they had just said "we didnt get as far as we wanted with the kickstarter, so we are doing EA and will be taking your feedback very seriously on where to focus resources" that would be something. What we have here is not something.
