Little Nemo: The Dream Master?
So, Demo was good, game feels fun HOWEVER,. i simply can not recomand it. After the demo part the game crashed twice on me once on loading a cutscene and once on teleport, one of the crashes corrupted my save file, and if such thing is the case I can not recomand it to anyone. I have high hopes for the developrers fixing the bugs and will most likely revisit the tittle in the future, but now it feels like an alfa, and, i personally do not take enjoyment of early access tittles.
Lame
This is another game I wish I could have a neutral recommendation on because it's not terrible but not great either. Otherskin is the second big release from the Game Atelier, makers of Monster Boy & the Cursed Kingdom, the best of the Wonder Boy series and one of my favorite games of the last decade. So, suffice to say that going into this game I had some high expectations on the gameplay side of things at least, and unfortunately the game utterly failed to live up to them. However, I believe this game is still somewhat fun in its own right. First of all, I have to say the Game Atelier have not improved in the writing department. I have absolutely no idea why they bothered getting VO for this script as 99% of the spoken lines are incidental dialogue about what's currently going on. At the end of the game, I barely have a picture of who Alex is despite her yammering on in every level. Plus, outside of her and her AI companion, there are literally no other characters so there is basically no story despite the premise. You need to stop the space goo from destroying the universe and then you do; end of story. There is some lore about the civilization that used to inhabit the planet, but it doesn't hold a candle to what Metroid Prime or Marathon trilogies achieved over two decades ago. Pre-release information and footage might have lead you, like me, to believe that this game was a metroidvania just like their last title. Instead we got a stage-based 3D Platformer inspired by many games from the Gamecube/PS2 era such a Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, Ratchet &Clank, and the Spyro series among many others I'm sure. Instead of gaining abilities and progressing over the course of the entire game, you gain a certain number of abilities within each stage and complete challenges based around them, and then you're stripped of them once you get back to the hub. Your base abilities are no slouch as you have a double jump and dash in addition to your gun and sword. Plus, you can upgrade them to give you new and stronger attacks. Stage design is generally very good with some standout setpieces such as a level that takes place on the body of a giant creature, a level that has you rail-grinding on a low orbit space station, a level that has you jumping between Mario Galaxy gravity spheres in a massive jungle, etc. The abilities you can copy from enemies are all very simple things like high jump. electricity pulses, a fluid sac and shooter. They're all one-button stuff which allows you to easily engage ith the challenges designed around them and later challenges that incorporate two or three of them at a time. In between this, you fight the occasional enemy rush or bossfight. Now, all that sounds great, I'm sure, and it is legitimately fun. However, the reason I want to give it a thumbs sideways is because the game doesn't really do much interesting or remarkable that wasn't being done by the games that inspired it, and given the choice, I would rather play those. However, there is a lot of good here, which is why I can't recommend you don't play it. So ultimately, I feel like I have to fall on th side of recommend as the positives I believe outweigh the negatives. The main issue I have is really with some of the jank and glitches I encountered such as clipping into objects, enemies still attacking after death, and poor performance at times for seemingly no reason (Thankfully no crashes). It's not really a deal breaker, though if you have a machine that can run this on medium settings at least.
Naja.
Pretty good idea, all the morphs and whatnot. Its simple, straightforward story (so far) is not necessarily a bad thing, but the bugs definitely are; random invisible outcroppings halfway down vertical cliff faces that respawn you there to die repeatedly being a good example a bit more polish being needed. Still would recommend, it's pretty fun at least as far as I got. FYI: Doesn't work on Steam Deck.
3D action bio-punk The universe is threatened by Corruption. Its origin's been traced back to planer Vandermere, the home of the now-extinct alien civilization known as Magna. Alex is the 13th Crusader of the Exodus mission- a soldier/researcher sent to investigate the planet. Her ship is attacked in orbit and infected by the Corruption. However, her bio-suit allows her to survive the infection, and gives her a unique ability- she can interact with the local fauna also infected by Corruption, and replicate their unique organs to imitate their biological adaptations. The game is a relatively linear, level-based action-adventure. Alex jumps, dashes, shoots and slashes her way through various levels connected to a central hub by portals, with the goal of reaching the end of each level and destroying the Corruption Core there. Each level has up to 3 alien creatures whose abilities (morphs) she can absorb and replicate. These range from fairly standard things like high jump & glide (via insect wings) and grapple (using a toad-like tongue), to more exotic things like time manipulation to restore destroyed structures and platforms, or manipulating environment with things like electricity, acid, sonic pulses, etc. Each level is designed around a specific theme, and there's quite a bit of variety and unique mechanics in each, being used in both traversal and puzzle-solving. Each level also has shrines that increase Alex's health, and unlock additional weapons, weapon firing modes, or abilities such as dash or heal. Killing enemies and breaking "bio-clusters" (local version of chests) grants currency that's used to upgrade Alex's suit and gun stats. Levels also have collectibles like Murals and Curiosities, that give further insight into the Magna and each level's backstory. While there's a bit of choice in which order you tackle some of the levels, and you can revisit the levels to collect things you may have missed, overall the game's structure is linear. You can backtrack in individual levels once you obtain specific morphs, which makes the game metroidvania-adjacent, without hitting the threshold. Gunplay is fairly basic, without meaningful recoil, and base weapons doing weak damage, but getting better with upgrades, encouraging exploration for more currency. The sniper rifle, in particular, becomes a strong mid-range weapon as well. Likewise, your melee "holo-sword" has a wide swing arc, but doesn't actually stun enemies, or stop them from attacking (unless you use ground-pound to juggle them). The penalty for dying is losing a bit of currency (that can be collected again), so death could be annoying, but not frustrating. Enemy variety's pretty sparse, but the focus of the game isn't combat, but exploration. The monster bosses are pretty unique (though typically you need to aim for weak spots to stun & whale on them), while more humanoid ones can feel a bit tedious. I enjoyed the puzzles focused around combining morph abilities, and didn't find things too difficult- though some of the collectibles could require some looking around, or even re-starting the level. Overall, getting to 98% completion (missing a few bio-clusters on a couple of levels- but having maxed out all upgrades anyway) took me 20 hours. This was a super-completion run, with restarting a few level after completion. Overall, I feel I got my money's worth. On the technical side, the game is UE5, and there was some stutter. Oddly enough, never had it disrupt combat, but sometimes when rotating the camera, it would be noticeable. There were a few relatively minor bugs, 3 crashes, and one time key items (corruption eyes I had to destroy) failed to spawn, so I had to go back to the hub and restart the level. So there's certainly things to address in a patch. Overall, I still loved the game, for the sheer level variety. There's a ton of creativity on display, and since there's no overall interconnected world here, the developers could go absolutely wild with trying to show off what challenges the different morph combos could yield. The sheer variety and creativity, combined with charming old-school sensibilities evokes games like Soul Reaver in terms of mechanics. Alex moves fast, jumps high, and the platforming generally feels good. The combat can start off feeling iffy, but once you upgrade some weapons (and especially once you get and upgrade the sniper rifle), it becomes mostly trivial, allowing you to focus on exploring, puzzling, and appreciating the sheer creativity on display here.
Otherskin is a fairly enjoyable game with solid and fun gameplay. There are some technical issues, including a few bugs, one crash, and occasional stutters, but nothing game-breaking. The visuals are decent — not impressive, but they get the job done. The story exists, but it lacks deeper lore and world-building details. The biggest downside is the short length, especially considering the price. Overall, it’s a solid mid-tier game best picked up on sale.
