A clever and captivating puzzle game ! The orb-switching mechanic is well implemented and the time-freeze ability adds a unique layer of strategy. The small sound-based puzzles are also well designed, blending perfectly with the minimalist and atmospheric world. Curious to see what new mechanics will appear next !
2 hours ago I would've given this game a 10/10. But after getting to Chapter 7 I give it a 7/10. Why? First of all. I absolutely love this game. I love it's VERY polished art style. The puzzles are difficult and fun, but not too difficult and unsolvable. The puzzles will tickle your blain. After a quick brain storming session it's not too hard to figure out the puzzles, which for me is perfect. I don't like games where I spend 30min running around trying to solve one puzzle. I probably spent around 5-10min for each non-achievement puzzle. Now the achievement puzzles are great. They are twists added on to the normal puzzles. For example, you'll have a basic puzzle where you use the balls to turn on a lift or a bridge and a few minutes of thinking and you're done. But then the achievement will add a challenge such as "complete with out killing a ball", "complete without swapping to another ball", or "complete before a bridge is activated X amount of times". These puzzles are SUPER fun and add a refreshing twist on each level that has them (most of them do). Some of these achievement-puzzles took me 15min-30min to figure out, and they feel incredibly rewarding once you figure out the solution. !!!!!!THIS PARAGRAPH CONTAINS SPOILERS (Skip to next paragraph)!!!!!! Chapters 1-2 had a really nice simple yet deep mechanics behind them. They're very basic positional and time based puzzles, but were utilized in very creative ways. Chapter 3 introduced being able to stop time and it harmonized perfectly with the previous chapters. Then Chapter 4 introduces sound rings where you have to move balls through rings in the right order based on a sequence of notes . This chapter was a nice refreshing brain teaser that also built on previous puzzles. But then Chapter 5 introduces controllable drones, and Chapter 6 introduces "programmable" drones. By the end of Chapter 6, I got kind of tired of the drones. I'll explain more in the next paragraph, but I didn't enjoy the drones as much as previous mechanics. Chapter 7 comes along and introduces a new sound mechanic (not sure how to describe it). The first 2 puzzles stayed away from the drones and I thought they were kind of fun, the third brought them back, and kept them for puzzle 4. Once I saw the drones again for puzzle 4 I got tired and turned the game off. I believe Chapters 5-7 have an issue compared to Chapters 1-4. 1-4 felt like Portal where you're messing around with physics in really creative ways, but 5-7 felt more like trying to find the right sequence. The creativity and sandbox feeling nature of 1-4 sadly goes away in 5-7. Another issue is that mechanics aren't expanded on enough. I haven't gotten to the Bonus Chapters so I don't know what's going on there, but I felt like as soon as I really started to grasp a new mechanics, it was dropped and the game moved on to something else. I wish chapters 2-4 had 2 or 3 more puzzles each to really enjoy the introduced mechanics. Despite these issues, this game is absolutely worth buying! I love these kinds of games and if you like puzzles, marbles, and physics-related mechanics, then you will too. Besides game mechanics, the art is very well polished and there's even a little bit of an underlying story. It's very a very cute game. IDK if I want to push past level 7, but I really want to see how this game ends and try the Bonus Chapter. Originally I wanted to get all of the achievements, but now I'm thinking of skipping the drones level achievements. Idk... we'll see. Great game... buy it.
Very neat puzzle game with a pleasing aesthetic.
I'm a fan of Portal games and puzzle games like this in general, and this one really surprised me with the quality of its level design. I finished the game in around 6 hours, and there are still the bonus levels to do. The visuals, the feel, the music, and the atmosphere are all successful. I didn’t really understand if there is an actual story, but the different cinematics are pleasant to watch. I really recommend this game — it is one of my favorite puzzle games.
I enjoyed playing with my big balls.
Feels a bit like Portal meets Stray (notably for the creep noises and the end of the world vibes). If you are used to puzzle game and enjoy them you might find the level 1 a bit tool easy but you'll start getting rewarded for your patience past the tutorial on level 2 The difficulty, not unlike portal comes part from the puzzles themselves and part from the platform element The game will not babysit you or help you - but in a good way
This is an excellent puzzle game which introduces consistently fun and inventive new mechanics throughout the entire game. It also has excellent achievements which add an additional level of challenge and replayability. Also has excellent visuals and music. Highly recommended.
A very respectable entry into the genre with some cool ideas
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ Extra challenges difficulty: ★★★★☆ At its core, it is a fairly traditional puzzle platformer with very solid puzzle design all around. All mechanics you will see here you probably have seen elsewhere already, but their combinations are interesting and fresh. Most puzzle ideas were fun to play with, however, I was personally not fan of the sound-based puzzles at all in chapter 4 and 7 (though your mileage may vary), but they weren't too bad with the accessibility setting. My favourite mechanics were the programmable drone, command, freeze and switch. Many puzzles lean heavily into timing and pre-planning your moves. If you want some extra challenge after you beat the game, try the achievement level restrictions. They can be pretty hard and lean into the gimmicks, physics and -sometimes- exploits of the game, forcing you to work around the 'normal' solution. Some are just perfect plays, some completely change how you solve the levels, some require precise timing or dexterity. The game runs butter smooth, no jank with the physics, the audio and sound design is great, and the visuals are sharp and beautiful. Even though Orbyss is not a trailblazer on any front, it is a good and well designed experience for such a small team.
