Orange Season

Was a promising game early access when it was "Fantasy Farming: Orange Season". Until well... They removed all the fantasy content and made it the one of the most boring farming sims in the realms. Game is too buggy to be playable anymore - not worth buying.

I really wish I would have tried this game right after buying it so that I'd be eligible for a refund. Obviously I didn't get very far, because of one QOL omission - when chopping, mining, etc., you can't just hold down the button and let it work. You have to mash the button repeatedly instead. And the game cycles too slow to keep up with your presses, so only every other one counts. I don't know how a developer could leave such a glaring user hindrance in a game, did they never play it themselves lol?

This game was in early access for a really long time. The game received constant content updates, but stacking bugs caused major performance issues. The developers wiped player save data several times in order to implement patch updates. The game finally seemed playable and stable after the official launch. However, a new bug appeared that caused player's to lose their save data. There have been no patch updates for 3 months, no news from developers on future plans, and no progress on the save data bug. Currently there is no suitable support for the game. I wouldn't advise purchasing the game, until the current issues are resolved.

I could not get into this game AT ALL. This was before I realized that Steam has a really good return policy, and it is now way past the return period. Don't be like me kids, don't buy this game. Or maybe that isn't fair - buy this game if you want to try it but make sure you are up-to-date on Steam's return policy!!

You play as a young person who’s always dreamed of owning a farm, and can finally realize their vision. You initially buy a small plot of land with a modest house already built on it. You can eventually upgrade your house by visiting the carpenter and also expand your land by buying the plot of land that are beside yours. The first quest you’ll be asked to fulfill, ‘meet your neighbours’, requires you to meet 30 different characters. This quest seems fairly easy and is used in concert with a few other as a tutorial of sorts. However because of the way the map is constructed, it ended up taking me many in-game days to complete. The other introductory quests are pretty straightforward, harvesting five turnips for example. At this time, the game doesn’t offer marriage options. There is still a friendship system where you build up your friendship level with each character by talking to them and offering them gifts. Each character has likes and dislikes to take into account. In a farming sim a good map is important, and Orange Season’s map is missing many important features which makes finding anything overly complicated. When you open the map, you’ll be presented with many different circles. Each circle is an illustration representing a different area of Orange Town. They are not a good navigation tool. The only information offered on each of these is which characters are in which area, and if they are home or not. It doesn’t show you where they are within this section. Additionally, It doesn’t show any of the main buildings, where they are, or where you are within the area. If you are looking for a specific store or character, good luck finding them. This map is a map in name only and lacks almost all functionality. It would be hard not to mention the similarity with Stardew Valley. The colorful look is stunning, and it is what drew me initially to the game. The backgrounds are lovely. Despite the pixelated style, the creators have managed to make detailed environments and characters. However Orange Season is not a Stardew Valley clone, and if this is what you expect you will be sorely disappointed. I had fun playing Orange Season, but it is not in the same league as Stardew Valley. The controls are your typical WASD navigation, but the action ones can be a little finicky. When you are farming a target will appear around the area you are tilling, but not for watering, planting the seed, or harvesting. It’s the same with foraging. You have to be facing the item you want to pick just right otherwise it won’t work. Personally it didn’t bother me too much, but it might frustrate some players. The mining, fishing, and cooking are straightforward. The fishing is really easy. You simply drop your line in the water where you see the fish’s shadows. Then when you see a ‘!’ appear on top of your character’s head, you click ‘E’ to reel in your line. Most of the time you’ll get a fish, but once in awhile it’ll come up empty. I still enjoyed my time with this game. If you don’t go in expecting a Stardew Valley 2.0, Orange Season can be a fun way to spend a couple of hours regardless of the issues I mentioned. I think that this game has the potential to become a fan favorite, and I will keep an eye out for updates. Horrible buggy game. It was great until the new company took over. No bug fixes other then a small patch post 1.0 release, and there were ZERO updates between the 0.7 and 1.0 versions. Company dose not care.

promising but for some reason they overhauled the whole thing and it sucks now. most of my time spent on this game was on the beta branch, which i recommend switching to if you already bought it. neither version is complete and i don't expect it will be anytime soon

I have had this game for a very long time. I was really excited and loved how the original developers were taking the game. When the map changed, I fell off playing for a little bit because it made me upset, by this time I had easily clocked 100 hours into it. Just this past week I came back to look at it. I had clocked in about 15 hours in the past 3 days so I had unlocked the kitchen along with one chicken, cow, and sheep. Had just gotten to a story quest after the 20x Sugarcane. Only to log on today and not a single previous save is there. Fix the game and put passion in it or this is good as done. When originally asked if I would recommend this game, I would have said yes. Now? No way in hell.

[h1] Unplayable [/h1] Multiple restarts with save game data lost. I started when this was still in beta. Had a great time and enjoyed the different aspects. Since the official launch, save game data disappears. I notified them several times, but apparently they are not concerned about the unplayability. Second issue is the map. Shows which person is in which sector. However, you don't get a specific place and have to run around looking for them. Anytime it rains, the majority stay in their houses, which you can't access. [spoiler]Third issue is the appearance of the original owner of the farm. Billy lost it cause taxes and lack of motivation to work. This happens with the first week. Suddenly, some of the npcs say you are a thief and your relationship stagnates. You don't even get a chance to establish a friendship before this happens. Just wow on timing. [/spoiler] Lastly, you can't repair any of the damaged areas on the farm. You are stuck with broken fences and posts. Aesthetically unpleasing. Overall a broken game with a bad map system, higher level of difficulty, and NOT relaxing at all.

Out of all the other farm sim games I played, I unfortunately found this one boring. The controls are janky. The map is confusing. I only played 30 mins and I found no joy in it.
