Honestly quite fun, though clunky at times. I kinda suck at platformers so i probably took wayyy too long to complete the game but i enjoyed it regardless. Thank you for this experience Travis, Zach and Paul :)
"Onward and Upward! DX" is an extremely badly made 2D retro pixel platformer, one of literally thousands of these infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of games everywhere. This one seems to be a game jam reject, and the developer apparently wasn't informed that PC's have different kinds of monitors, once 4:3, now almost always 16:9, and never, ever 1:1. It doesn't matter if some other platform had a 1:1 display aspect ratio. PC is not that platform. This features really godawful, lazy pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks bad because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer decided to breach Valve guidelines just to be sarcastic. Yes, the game is "free", but that doesn't mean it's good. I point out very clearly in my review that there's over 11,000 "free" games on Steam, which this compares poorly against. The developer seems upset that their game was reviewed (after all, gamers just mostly ignore this because it's crap... the SteamDB figure of only 2 concurrent players only happening once does not lie, it paints a very clear story that the developer utterly failed here). Why would the developer take such offense at a truthful and honest review? Oh, yeah, because the developer doesn't understand that reviews are not for developers, they are for other gamers. Ironically, the developer never considered gamers at all when they made this... this is clearly just dumped on Steam so the developer can stroke his own ego and pretend he's a real game developer. As always, this egocentric ignorance of what gamers actually want and care about is what has lead to this abject failure, but it doesn't excuse it. Whenever developers, especially talentless ones, put themselves before gamers, this is the inevitable result. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.

Cute platformer. The soundtrack slapped WAY harder than it should have. If you wanna collab on some future game add me on steam Travis!
Onward and Upward is a retro-styled platformer that has you following a girl on her adventure to the moon with various obstacles along the way. Simple enough, but what this game delivers in is a tried-and-true experience with by cozy graphics and a well-done soundtrack. A book always has more to offer under its cover, and I certainly wouldn't call this "low-quality". I'm not typically a platformer enjoyer, but for a short game it was enjoyable and kept me on my toes while remaining well paced and not too frustrating. The game is a constant stream with no cutscenes and minimal loading. It feels as if some platformers lean towards making the player agitated with obstacles begging perfectionism, but the jumping and movement feels nice and obstacles could be viewed as minor puzzles. As for the difficulty, overall I'd call it balanced, I definitely had to pay attention and focus on my accuracy at certain parts, but even on the hardest obstacles, it became just a matter of knowledge and some reaction speed. The game starts off pretty easy while it demonstrates core concepts, but the difficulty curve is pretty smooth and introduces new strategies throughout each level. The mechanics are simple enough as well, jumping, gliding and grappling, but with the pacing and length of the game you never really run out of ways to use them as the game will throw out something new when you get used to it. The checkpoints are also very well paced and usually always came right after a part where I thought "a checkpoint would be nice right about now." For the style and aesthetic, the 1:1 resolution might be the first thing you notice when you play, but it only serves to help in the game's retro style and personally reminds me of nostalgic games I used to play with old Flash platformers. The creative choice is welcome as the game is well tailored towards the resolution and fits the screen well despite it not being a typical 16:9 ratio. The camera wasn't left behind, either. It fits the game elements and any crucial information you'd need to know when it comes to obstacles and paths, and it does a good job of smoothly following the player but keeping its pixel-perfection. The art is low resolution and pixel styled, but that didn't stop the artist from delivering interesting tiles and a unique style that I don't always see, mixing styles of solid backgrounds, transparency, visually distinct elements, vibrant colors and an overall consistent and nice to look at color palette. Animated tiles appear as well which really remind me of retro classics. It really does feel like the art plays with limitations and constraints that you'd see with old cabinet/console games, but makes good use of them. Levels also feature different warning signs and visual indicators which help with the limited view of the camera and really kept me away from getting confused or stuck. The soundtrack complements the style and gameplay perfectly—subtle enough to stay in the background but enjoyable and varied across levels. It’s worth keeping the volume on for the full experience. It doesn't get enough justice from the trailers, same goes for the art. The game has various achievements, secrets and easter eggs that reward completionists, but can be easily found on your own even in your first run, which can feel like a small reward for accidents or close attention. The UI also features a built in timer if you have an interest in speedrunning, as well as coins that lead the path and can act as a score. What I wish I noticed sooner was the game has a workshop and a rather fleshed out cheat menu in the settings, which I wouldn't of expected at first. The cheats involve different buffs and modifiers but, you can always turn on the chaos mode which will periodically give you random effects if you want a challenging or silly run, the game is short enough to where you could probably leave room to optimize or just rush through it with this on. The only issues I had with the game is that sometimes the side-to-side/up-down platforms had finicky kill boxes or movements, and you can be killed by spikes from the side by just tapping them, but generally it had no major bugs and no frustrations that detracted from the overall experience Overall, if you want a short and polished platforming game with a familiar but interesting soundtrack and charming art style, I can recommend this game. It may not be ambitious or grand, but that's a quality that make it enjoyable and easy to digest. As far as free games go, this is a good addition with a developer (or team of) that seems to care about making a neat experience.
Bom jogo
