Oneiro is a challenging rogue-like, similar - but different to - risk of rain 2, that gives you creative control over how you want to play. You can be a tank with lots of hp and health regen, or be a speedy boi with 10 mid-air mad hops. The thing that makes this game so incredible is the duplication mechanic; where you can pick up 'duplicators' and use them to create a copy of any item in your inventory, making you stronger. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that this game is very unforgiving (in a good way), so it's great for people that like lots of replay-ability, and those that like a challenge. I have sunk nearly 24 hours into this game at the time of writing, and this game has me hooked. This is a good game, with a cool developer, and I can't wait for future updates.
Oneiro is a first-person roguelike action RPG featuring rock-solid gameplay, dead-serious challenge, and a shocking amount of extremely clever and effective design decisions. It's honestly one of the best games I've played in years. If you love roguelikes, King's Field, Morrowind, or just good action games, at this price it's an absolute must-buy. Its core combat is fundamentally well-designed because all damage can be avoided through skill, although doing so is easier said than done. There are several weapon types, each of which features primary and alternate (usually charge-up) attacks. Special mention goes to the default fist weapon, which has several alternate attacks depending on when you right-click during your auto-combo. The traps, enemies, and bosses all do a phenomenal job of capturing the "look before you leap" gameplay that was so successful in CastleVania and Dark Souls. Namely, the best way to play Oneiro is to proceed carefully and keep your eyes and ears open. New players will quickly learn to examine their surroundings carefully after getting impaled by spikes for the dozenth time. Perhaps the main thing that sets Oneiro apart is its unique and engaging dungeon design. Most notably, both ceilings and floors are translucent, so instead of using a mini-map you just look up or down to find treasure rooms. You can destroy most floors and ceilings, and a certain item gives you a double-jump, so the amount of freedom of movement is insane and really elevates the gameplay. Skilled players will constantly be breaking walls and bouncing all over the place, grabbing all the treasure while staying relatively safe. If you love jumping around Morrowind, Oneiro really captures that gameplay but in a more focused, action-oriented way. Speaking of Morrowind, the RPG elements are a lot like that as well. Namely, effects stack forever into infinity, so if you play your cards right you can end the game with an insane attack skill or literally 10 double-jumps. After the dungeon design, Oneiro's most genius aspect is the Duplicator system. Basically, there's a fairly common item that will duplicate (almost) any item in your inventory, including those that grant passive stat boosts, so you can customize your build quite a bit by cleverly using Duplicators. As for the roguelike aspect, Oneiro hits a sweet spot of volatility to make every run interesting but just tame enough that skilled players can still succeed even if they suffer a few bad bounces. It wisely limits runs to 30 minutes, ensuring the player's ass is on fire and they're making their way through dungeons as aggressively as possible. Oneiro is one of the funnest and most interesting games I've played in recent memory. It's genuinely hard to stop playing once you start, and beating it was one of the most engaging and rewarding experiences I've had in some time. It's really ♥♥♥♥♥♥' hard, though. Good luck.
I'm not too far in, just kinda getting my grip around the edges of the gameplay at the moment. There is a nice balance being struck with the gameplay systems, Each time you re-enter the dream the combat becomes a little more clearer, and you're ability to read telegraphed attacks from the enemies broadens. As well as this i'd like to mention the duplication system, A truly awesome videogame mechanic, subtly implemented into the gameplay allowing you to duplicate any item you want. This allows you to stack abilities like the double jump, essentially letting you jump all about the place like 'Jumping Flash' So yeah don't be fooled by this games simple art style, as there is a deceptively deep title here with plenty for any fan of the roguelite genre to enjoy.
A nice breath of fresh air, challenging experience and great fun. Definitely worth the full five dollars, with an interesting concept and neat mechanics. You can feel the love put into this game and see the developer is showing how much they care about their own product, getting direct insight from Discord and their friends about bugs and suggestions. I recommend playing this, five dollars isn't enough to repay the joy from this amazing game.
Honestly one of my favorite indie game of all time. I was never a fan of rogue likes until i played this game. It is challenging but not hard for the shake of it. You can actually learn the movements and attack movesets of the enemies and improve in the game. When i lose the game, it's almost always my fault and not the game's, and i learn from those said failures. It still has some problems which the dev addressed and said will fix/improve in the next following updates, which shows that he still tries to improve the game for us to enjoy. If you are up for a good fun challenge definetly buy this game. Definetly worth your time!
I like Oneiro. recorded some of my progress with Oneiro. Please watch if you prefer a more Audio / Visual outlook on Oneiro. https://youtu.be/X2Zt-EAbC_c Oneiro is an inventive Indie, Action RogueLike, FPS Dungeon Crawler RPG where you smash your way through a Destructible dreamscape prison. Smash dream monsters with your fists of dread steel & steal their essence, all to fuel your psychic power as you smash through the dreamscape!
Rip and Tear, Dream Slayer!
That’s right, I said Destructible, as Destructible Terrain is a big part of Oneiro, as you can literally smash through the walls and ceilings to get to your foes, even the very floor! But watch your feet, as you might just send yourself falling into the pit of darkness, or into the maw of the very boss itself! Visually, Oneiro reminds me of the dream sequences of Ultima Underworld 2, cool! But this time, you can rip the labyrinth apart! That’s right, you can Physically Smash down Walls, Ceilings and More, climbing onto the top to seize the high ground and battle from a position of strength, or at least a position free of nasty traps.
Watch Out For Traps!
Watch out for those traps, like spike taps on the floors, and hiding on the sides of walls, ready to pierce and penetrate you roughly, as well as pitfall traps that will sent you falling into the abyss below after a 1 second warning, so make certain you have a grappling hook to quickly save yourself. I find smashing down a ceiling and climbing up top and traveling that way much safer, as the traps don’t seem to be present up there, but most of the chests and loot is in the labyrinth below, so you have to decide where and when to descend.
Procedural Generation & Perma Death:
Oneiro has Procedural Generation of the dungeon, as well as Perma Death, though Meta Progression does not seem to be present, as all the upgrades you find in the dungeon are only for your current character, and each new trip to the labyrinth starts you off fresh. Oneiro has full controller support too, though I found keyboard and mouse works better in an FPS.
Some Oneiro Gameplay tips, as it is Tough:
To move faster, just jump around everywhere, bunny hopping around like a wild man like it’s a 90s boomer shooter; cool! Those creepy black eyes you see in the wall are shops, literally imbedded in the walls. They sell upgrades for your current run; using the essence you have ripped from your defeated dream foes, feed the wall to feed the beast within! Oneiro starts you with nothing save your fists and a dream, so use your fists as best you can. There is a melee combo system for the fists with mouse + keyboard controls: Holding LMB = left, right, uppercut LMB + RMB = Pow Pow Pow! RMB = push?
Oneiro Critiques / Suggestions:
I like Oneiro, but I did encounter some issues that could be smoothed out to improve the experience. I’ll sort them by degree of potential player dungeon delving disruption, as anything that meaningfully takes the player out of that core gameplay experience of Oneiro is something to be addressed. The first concerns the game start.
1. Concerning the game start:
The game should start you in the Dungeon, not the super boring and lame in game ‘real world’. I’d strongly suggest opening the game in the procedurally generated labyrinth, where you have full use of all your abilities and controls to begin to learn the game. Don’t force the player to click through a boring NPC section where they have no real agency, and which does not really show off the game. The Oneiro gameplay is in the labyrinth, so start in the labyrinth! A simple fix, but a necessary one I’d say.
2. That loud beep in the options menu is HORRIBLE!
Every click in the options, it plays. If that beep were to never play again, Oneiro would be a better game. It’s that annoying and bad. :(
3. Different Starting Equipment, at least Start the Character with Something.
Think Splunky, where you always start with 3 ropes, and 3 bombs. Starting with at least a grapplehook in Oneiro would mitigate some of the frustration of hitting an early pit trap, as slowly falling into the void with nothing you can really do about it doesn’t feel great. It in fact, feels the opposite of great. ☹
4. Maybe even Classes to Select:
A Rogue that starts with a dagger and knives A Brawler / Monk that starts with a fist full of power pills, plus some other item A Fighter that stars with a sword and his lucky dice Stuff like that. This would greatly help differentiate the game start, as currently, each time you pop in with nothing but your fists and a dream. Let me manifest a psychic blade to cut down my foes with my warrior spirit. Let me shank dream monsters with my viciousness and spite, bound in a jagged blade of hate. Let me shape the character a bit before the chaos starts. It’s my dream right? Let me live my dream dev dude! 😊
5. Pictures on your Bare House Wall. Show off your Dream Conquests!
Maybe this is already a thing if you win or something, but it would be cool if different items you find could display as drawings or pictures on your bare house walls in the ‘real world’. Decorate that room a bit, showing off your dream conquests with wild dream drawings. Maybe this could serve as a means of selecting of a different starting character or items? Not granting any real extra power or anything, just as a means of visually displaying alternate starts to be chosen. Sidegrades, not upgrades, keeping with the whole roguelike not lite focus of the game.
6. The Enemies should Trigger the Spike Traps, as it doesn’t seem they currently do.

7. Slime / Ooze Monster Projectiles: More Oozing Slime like, less round ball like.
The slime ooze type monsters’ projectiles should be more jagged and slime shaped, not a perfectly shaped sphere. I did like how the spike traps literally burst a slime shot as it sped towards me. I didn’t expect that, and it that was really cool. Just some ideas. 👍 Anyway, I do like Oneiro, and I enjoyed my time in it. So, if an Indie FPS Action RogueLike with Procedural Generation and Permadeath through a challenging, trap filled labyrinth appeals to you, than come smash some dream monsters with me. Watch with me?
I would say after playing and beating this game I would Highly recommend this Game to anyone who like rouge-likes. It's confusing when you first boot it up and offers next to no explanation for how things in the game work. Which is perfect It allows the play to kind of grow and figure this stuff out. (at the time of creating this the creator did make an optional tutorial.) As it stands now the game has replay value is small and is beautifully simplistic. I would Highly Recommend
As a game designer, I often hunt Steam for replayable systemic games. Finding Oneiro was a joy, and I deeply appreciate its mechanics. It's inspiring to see it come from a solo indie dev. Excellent work!
solid "dream-geon" crawler roguelite with an item system similar to RoR2. And it's still getting updates!
Don't let this playtime fool you, I'm already hooked and just had to get this review in now. This is one of the strangest, most intriguing first person dungeon crawlers I've ever played. Definitely gonna play more. Update: I've played more, still enjoy it, and now have a video review on it, as well. https://youtu.be/WNiNAdJDWsY
