A game which involves platforming, combat, and puzzle solving with a hint of humor added to it. Over all the game isn't too hard for the most part, as the checkpoint system is generous enough in case you die a lot from falling into pits and other things.
This is the funniest game I've played in a while, and not only is it funny, but it also has that heartfelt kind of storytelling and humor that just works. If you've been looking for an action adventure that tests both your platforming, puzzling and combat skills, and masterfully blends it all, this is what you've been waiting for. It is specially impressive for what is essentially a solo dev endeavor, but that of course comes with some caveats. It has some bugs, usually not game-breaking, but I had several boss fights freeze on me, sometimes keeping me from completing them (Moleman wasn't throwing his help), and other times acting as an assist mode where I could wail on the enemy without them fighting back. These are usually fixed by exiting and re-entering your save file, like the time I solved the statue puzzle but the result wouldn't trigger, but they are a nuissance nonetheless. The controls and combat are a bit of a mixed bag. When platforming your character is usually nimble and precise, they do the job for the sometimes challenging platforming they ask of you, but other times they are a bit stiff (the animation when climbing and jumping from ledges could be looser, with less or without anticipation) or unreliable (sometimes you wall jump, wall run or wall slide when you don't want too, or you don't when you do, so I think the claws would act better if triggered on command like in the 2008 Prince of Persia). When it comes to combat, it can be fluid and challenging, but it is sometimes stiff (some animations don't trigger or take too long to start and end, without being reliably cancelled by the dodge) and enemies aren't hit or juggled when they are supposed to. Warts and all, I'm so happy I got to play through this game and it hopes it gets more chapters coming. It was such a nice throwback to PS2 era action adventure games like Crash Twinsanity (it feels so much like Crash with its humor and in particular platforming segments) and Prince of Persia (with its creative puzzles and pathfinding focused platforming). Shout out to Addy Lovestar for recommending this little gem.
One True Hero is an absolute charming game. I am a big supporter of single dev projects and impressed by the end-result given it is the developer’s first project. The game brings me back to N64 and PS1 era of games and offers some delightful nostalgia. What I enjoyed in my 3h+ so far is: • I found the writing and cut-scenes to be hilarious and entertaining. Cannot recall a game in recent times, which made me laugh so much. • Did not expect the game to have VA and find it well done • Love the quirky animations in the cut-scenes, which add a certain charm and flair to the overall tone of the game and its writing • The soundtrack is great and loving it. • I enjoy a good challenge and the hollow realm platforming challenges are designed well • Enemy variation has been great so far • Controls and camera work well • Good mix of combat, platforming and puzzles • Clever level design • It feels varied in challenges and moments • Good pacing so far • Fair checkpoints • Difficulty feels well balanced so far, while playing it on hardest setting • Runs well playing it on Steamdeck Room for improvements: • The platforming can be tricky at times, as it misses that fine tuning nuance for precise jumps, especially in situations where there is not much space on a platform to land. Initially, It has been challenging to judge the jump distance correctly, which has led to several deaths, as the jump was either too short or too long. Therefore, it took some time to master and get used to it. • Having no possibility to hang onto ledges on all platforms and only on pre-determined ones has caused me more than once to die when the jump went wrong. • Fights can become repetitive at times, as even though the game offers enemy variations, I ended up using the same combat tactics repeatedly. Overall, I recommend the game and tremendous job from the single dev. 8/10
Honestly, not bad at all. I have to play more, but so far the game makes my inner child smile. It reminds me of the platformer/adventure games I played as a kid on my PsOne and PS2, which is great. I believe anyone that crave that nostalgic feeling or any kid will enjoy it. In addition to that, the controls are smooth and the camera works well, at least in my experience. So yeah, worth it.
