About
Hey folks, Jason Rohrer here. After 8+ years of existence, the Discord server had devolved into a very unfriendly, negative, and drama-filled place. It had gotten to the point where I didn't even like stepping foot in there myself, and every time I did, I regretted it. I considered just closing it down entirely.
I recently took some very big steps toward cleaning it up, appointing a new outside moderator (a personal friend from real life who has a very level head), and banning anyone who was continuing to be unfriendly and negative (including some of the old moderators, some of whom who had become ringleaders of negativity and personal attacks).
Of course, the people who got banned are upset, and (surprise!) they are review bombing the game.
But it's pretty amazing: in just one day, the Discord server is already much more calm and friendly and positive. I'm sure game sales will be temporarily affected by this review bomb.... but... well... something had to be done.
Thank you for taking a look at One Hour One Life anyway, which is a deeply personal game that I sunk my heart and soul into.

Hey folks, I'm Jason Rohrer, and I spent more than 6 years making One Hour One Life. I did everything myself---I drew all the graphics on paper with pens and markers, I coded the entire engine from scratch, I composed and performed all of the music*, and I even made all of the sound effects. It's a very personal game, and it's really unlike anything else that's out there. It's also a huge game---over 4,400 fully interactive, craftable objects and over 2,400 hand-drawn sprites. The game was initially released on my own website in February of 2018 and then later that year on Steam. Over next few years, I released 154 weekly updates as I aimed for my goal of making the largest, most comprehensive crafting game in history.
Okay, so what about the game itself?
First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year. You join the game server as a newborn baby, and some other randomly-chosen player is your mother. You depend on her for your survival. And why will she be willing to waste her valuable time and resources to keep you alive? Because she's going to die in an hour just like everyone else, and if she wants what she accomplishes in her lifetime to have any meaning, then the next generation (aka, you) is her only hope. And if you survive into adulthood, you may get the chance to have babies of your own---other players, just joining the server---and those babies will be the next generation that gives meaning to your own life accomplishments.
Across this ever-growing family tree of generations, players are collectively conducting an enormous project: they are rebuilding civilization from scratch. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). The very first player to join the server is Eve, and she starts out in the wilderness as the root of the family tree. Eve and her immediate offspring lay the foundation for the future civilization, perhaps making a few primitive tools, cooking basic foods, and starting a small farm as they scrape out a meager existence before dying. Future generations will build on this primitive foundation, eventually mastering more and more advanced technology, including domesticated animals, metal working, permanent buildings, engines, transportation networks, photography, electronics, and even interplanetary travel.
But as real-life history has shown, civilization is fragile. A generation that is born into the lap of luxury---on the backs of their ancestors' hard-won accomplishments---can just as easily squander their inheritance as build upon it. Key resources run out over time, so careful management, planning, and organization are necessary to prevent an inevitable collapse. Thus, the game graduates from the individual challenge of primitive survival in the early stages to a group organizational and leadership challenge in the later stages. How do rules and procedures for group survival propagate across multiple generations? What did our great grandparents have in mind for this village?
The main mode in the game involves being born as a helpless baby to another player as your mother, but you can also play with your friends as twins, triplets, or quadruplets. One baby is hard enough to take care of---any mother that can successfully take care of quadruplets deserves the eternal gratitude of you and your friends.
All of this is happening on my own centrally-managed, persistent servers, and your purchase includes a lifetime account on these official servers. After you buy the game, you can instantly connect to this world with no configuration or server set-up. It all just works. You also get access to the full source code, including the server code. Technically-minded folks can run their own private servers, or even use the powerful content editor to make their own mods.
And once you master interplanetary travel in the game, you will gain access to Another Hour Another Planet, which features an alien world where all game elements and artwork are made entirely by the community.
I hope you'll join us as this sprawling civilization-building experiment continues to unfold. Many tens of thousands of players have already collectively lived over 3.7 million hours in this endlessly-changing world so far. Over the life of the game, he average playtime for each player has been 22 hours, with over 1100 players logging over 500 hours each.
No two lives are ever the same, and a new story always awaits on the other side of the [GET REBORN] button.

Horrid developer. He glorifies nazis and people that make r*pe threats while banning long-time players and active community members just for disagreeing with him. Has such good potential but the developer is TERRIBLE! He says he is "banning people who are making the discord server an unfriendly place" DONT LISTEN! he's banning people who disagree with sexual harassment and racists!
People ruined the game for others with hate speech, and surprisingly, the developer used DARVO tactics to support the hate speech, while anyone who speaks out against it gets banned. This game is no longer playable

Wow, I got banned from the Steam community page by the developer (who, allegedly, loves freedom of speech) because I dared to tell the truth and criticize the direction that he’s taking with the game. I wasn’t rude or personal. I gave a valid comment on his recent JOY (of all the names) update and his essay about it (which had a lot of words and excuses). The game has been plagued by griefers who like to name their families disturbing SA names, throw slurs at you, cosplay as certain people from WW2 and put you in certain camps from that era… that is if they don’t starve or stab you while you’re still a baby. Earlier this year it got so bad that the game became unplayable and because you’ve cursed the griefers, you ended up in DT. The developer was criticized for his inactions, rightfully so. People have been asking for a minor moderation system. He claims there were personal attacks on his character which I can’t comment about because I’m not active in the Discord. But imagine this happening to you for quite some time – you paid for the game, and you cannot play it because the developer is not interested in the game whatsoever (in my personal opinion). Wouldn’t you be upset and angry? I’m not justifying the attacks on his character if they were present. But it has been going on for years. And when he finally decides to nuke all the accounts that were causing trouble – the game was a JOY to play. I like the silly art, sounds, and style of the game in general. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with some awesome people, but all the good things are overshadowed by the bad actors that the developer is adamantly protecting for some reason. I’m not going to say anything about the “incident” in the Discord and allegations because I don’t know the details fully. But good people got banned, and the griefers got unbanned and are allowed back into the game – some of them anyway. The griefers are pretending to be his buddies in the Discord now, and he keeps whining about people leaving bad reviews, how he likes freedom of speech (ironically) and accepts valid criticisms (insert a clown emoji here). I was never a part of the group that got banned; I was just an average player who enjoyed his farming. I was shocked to find out that my comments were deleted, and I got banned from the Steam community page altogether (freedom of speech much, Jason?!) It turns out those people were absolutely right about his character. I was never planning to leave a negative review; I kept playing even after all the drama. I wanted to leave a constructive comment about his explanations – I left a valid response to his actions – he deleted it. He clearly doesn’t want to be nice, so I’m not going to be nice either. As a paying customer, I WILL be heard, and you WILL have to listen to the community for once whether you like it or not! I DO NOT recommend this game – not because it’s bad but because the developer doesn’t want to prevent harassment in the game and REFUSES to listen to valid opinions of his customers. Your actions have consequences. Enjoy the review, Jason. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PS Not that I have to explain my low hours in this game but just in case – I play with the mod only. The hours don’t count when you play the game with the mod. It’s a better user experience which the developer couldn’t (or didn’t care to) implement to the game, but a modder could.
Pros: Great game Cons: Developer is a psychotic nazi who sabotages the community
NOT SAFE FOR CHILDREN OR ANY DECENT ADULT After countless of wonderful lives and many friends made, I have made the decision to uninstall this game forever. The reason > the horrible environment created and allowed by the dev. It used to be a great game, full of nice people who wanted to collaborate and be loving to each other. Now it's full of the opposite and this is not only supported by fuelled by the dev. Do you want to be insulted? Do you want to see hostile and mean interactions? Do you want racism? Do you want your personal data to be used illegally? Then yes, do buy this game. Games are supported by their community and it needs to be taken care of and kept safe. You have failed your community and your game. Shame on you.
The creator of his game will use your information against you. If you buy from him you risk being doxxed to the toxic sesspool that is his "Rohrer Games" discord. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ His trailer for the game is basically a lie. Half that stuff doesn't exist in the game. Cars and rockets are as high as the tech goes. No monorail, no mechanical walls. No phonorecord. No computers. No clocks, no calendars, no guitars. No scarecrow guard. The creepy middle aged balding man Jason sprite, does, unfortunately exist. Jason (the creator) thinks holocaust jokes are funny but has crepe paper skin in his discord server. Do you like swastikas, nazi roleplay, concentration camp roleplay, slavery roleplay, descriptive incest roleplay, baby making at 14, being doxxed and other horrible unmoderated content? Then THIS is the game for you. If you're unsure how horrible the moderation in game is, or how horrible the creator is, go ahead and reach out to him on his discord server. He's not afraid to say the stupidest things in defense of nazi rage baiters. OH AND races are split up in this game and are GPS restricted to where they can have babies. Unless you're white. Then you can have babies anywhere, you're a colonizer! (He thinks this is a good thing)
Where to begin. I have played this game for years (direct from site so my steam hours are low) and I will now never touch it again. The dev not only defends and jokes about nazism (and people who roleplay nazis and child sexual abuse in game), but also doxes purchaser/player information anytime he feels like it — names, emails, phone numbers. A cool game that is no longer safe to play. Avoid.
A game like this, which is based on social interactions and cooperative effort lives and dies by its community. So far the developer has proven to be in support of the more disturbing elements of the game, that is harrassment, racism, sexism and has thus supported the players perpetuating it over the players which wished for it to be stopped, both ingame and out of the game. Genuinely, if you want to play a game where you build a generational effort, this is not it, find something else, as you might find yourself on the recieving end of harassment.
The actions of the developer are gross and killed the game
Just read the dev's 21st August announcement. I was very much out of the loop as I have not played this game for 7 years, but after seeing the reactions of most parties involved, I was curious because something, somewhere in this game has gone terribly wrong. After doing some digging, I now feel informed enough to have an opinion and I can say that this game cannot be recommended to anyone that lives outside of the United States, preferably to nobody at all. I personally regret giving this dev money at all, and it seems like a very dangerous decision for anyone else to do the same. At first if you've only read the announcement, then you might come out of it with the opinion that the negative reviews are simply "griefers who are salty that they got banned". But the language and attitudes of the negative reviews clearly do not reflect that. Then I watched this video by a fellow European youtuber named Twisted: https://youtu.be/NZo2jWzCtfU If the same words, events and opinions are coming from fanatically loyal content creators towards the game, then clearly it's not "just griefers". There's clearly a consensus that has formed from a large number of different people, some of whom used to be moderators for the game's discord, all saying the same thing. That the dev is toxic. That the dev encourages toxic behaviour in his game and that the dev is friendly to the griefers that he claims to hate whilst innocuous regular players are the ones who get punished. That the dev is glorifying racist griefers, the far-right in general and is crossing the line when it comes to utilising personal information collected against players he doesn't like etc. Americans have this completely messed up view on life thanks to their idiotic and outdated "First Amendment" that thinks it gives them the right to do and say whatever they want, no matter how disgusting and abhorrent the content is to whomever they please without any regard to the impact their words and beliefs have on others. Despite the fact that I completely lost interest in this game a long time ago, I feel it necessary to make this review because there's an ever increasing number of "Solo devs" from the United States that behave in exactly the same way Jason has done with his game (the dev of Solar Nations II being another example) in where they create somewhat interesting and unique games which'll entice you into buying, then you end up finding out that they support far-right and extremist beliefs, which are either included directly in the game itself or the dev's poor and sketchy conduct makes it abundantly clear that they have them (or both), which makes it impossible to continue playing said games without feeling sick to your stomach. It is part of a growing trend across the gaming space that needs to be eliminated before it gets out of control. The only bit of advice I can offer is to make sure if you're going to buy a game from a solo developer, ensure that they're not from the United States and do as much research as you can into them before going all in. Otherwise the outcome that has occurred in this game is likely to be repeated elsewhere and you'll regret it.
