I am literally Aubrey. OMORI is a heartfelt game, a kickstarter I waited for 8 years, and a well-written story. At first, it looks like a strange, charming tumblr-esque RPG with colorful environments, cute friends, weird enemies, and a cute soundtrack. Then it just beats you up, emotionally. You take damage irl. This is not just a game about depression, trauma, or sadness. It is about what happens when people lose someone, lose each other, and do not know how to become whole again afterward. It is about childhood ending badly. It is about memory becoming a place you hide in, even when that place starts hurting you more than reality does. Every main character feels like a different response to grief. The gameplay is genuinely fun too. The emotion system adds a surprising amount of strategy to battles, the art direction is unforgettable, and the soundtrack can go from comforting to deeply unsettling in seconds. Some sections drag a little, and the game can be intentionally cryptic, but honestly, that disorientation is part of why it works. OMORI is not perfect comfort media. It is uncomfortable, heavy, occasionally horrifying, and emotionally exhausting. Please take the content warnings seriously. But it is also deeply compassionate. It does not treat broken people as monsters. It treats them as people who were hurt, made mistakes, got lost, and still might deserve a way forward. 10/10. Would emotionally ruin myself again.
