About

The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.
Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you can use for whatever you want.
Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

Big fan of this one -- you learn music composition playing by ear and in bite sized chunks, so it's not overwhelming at all. I love that you get fun/unusual instruments right out the gate like a tiger toy piano! I'm really looking forwards to the roadmap they've posted [chiptunes, my beloved....] Music always seemed impossible to me, but this makes game makes it feel like I can learn it, too. And it's really fun! I like the tasks/commission style missions the game provides, its very motivating. It's a reasonable price for a great start on music composition! Please give it a try :)
Amazing hours spent making bangers, has encouraged me to open cubase and mess with my stylophones and synth again

I was so stoked to dive into this when I first saw it and I have not been disappointed. The tools built in are fun to use and presented in a gradual way that I find to be so perfect for learning and building on that knowledge without being overwhelmed by the real-life sandbox of the great expanse of "all musical tools, ever". For people interested in making music in general, the collection of instruments are suggestive of a sort of "sound-hunting" you can do in real life, collecting interesting sounds out in the real world and then taking them back to the studio to experiment with. Not only is the game fun and looks great, you have something really rare from a game: an actual piece of art that is uniquely you, and put away very tidily into a file in .wav format for you to use in whatever way you like. Everything you create is yours to keep, and the guidelines from your customers fuel directions of creativity that you might not seek on your own. Fun, educational, and rewarding beyond a simple dopamine loop that most games have to offer. Awesome deal for the money, and in early release even it feels so polished and nice. Can't wait to see what else this small team can do in the future, well done!!
At the time of making this review the second chapter hasn't been released yet, but I'll certainly come back to this game when more content is released because I've had a lot of fun with it! It's definitely beginner-friendly for people like me who haven't produced music in similar ways before. There are two things I think could be added to upgrade the gameplay. First is the ability to change the time signature - the grid you have to work with is always arranged in 4/4 and I think it'd be nice to do 3/4 or even 5/8, 7/8, etc. Second is the ability to have a metronome you can turn on and off so that it's easier to rhythmically arrange other notes how you want it to while composing. I found myself making a metronome beat a lot so I could do that so a simple click on/off thing would be nice.
It's the cat's meow
Gostei da forma como o jogo introduz novos instrumentos e me força a criar músicas com características específicas, fazendo com que eu expanda minhas opções ao criar música.
making music is fun.
Wow... I'm going to be complete honest, for people who want to get into music production and just learn the basics without putting too much skin in the game, I would HIGHLY recommend this game frfr. It slowly starts you from basic arrangement and simple melodic structure, and as you get better you see how your skills are being built upon. If you wanna take it a step further, cop The Producer's Handbook DLC. It isn't necessary but if you wanna go the distance with this and build your knowledge before spending money on IRL gear, it will be a BIG help. All in all, I enjoyed every moment of this game, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else they add! If there's one thing I would say is a "drawback" is I wish they gave me 5 tracks instead of 4, but you'll see why that is once you start playing it!
you can make music with a singing gnome
