About
Selected by the fickle finger of fate, Abe™, floor-waxer first class for RuptureFarms, was catapulted into a life of adventure when he overheard plans by his boss, Molluck the Glukkon™, to turn Abe and his fellow Mudokons into Tasty Treats as part of a last-ditch effort to rescue Molluck's failing meat-packing empire.
During his escape from RuptureFarms, Abe received a vision from the mysterious Big Face, showing Abe that he must not only rescue his fellow Mudokons, but also protect all of Oddworld's creatures from the predatory Magog Cartel.
After completing arduous Temple trials, and journeying across a wasteland with his friend Elum, Abe was granted the awesome power of the Shrykull. Returning to RuptureFarms, Abe destroyed the foul slaughterhouse, rescued his buddies, and brought down some righteous lightning on top of Molluck's pointy head.

mi primer juego :')
Verdict
✅ Recommended A legendary classic and a very nostalgic game for me.
My history with the game
I played Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee many times as a child. I even had the PC CD version back then, and I spent a lot of hours with this game. It became one of those childhood games that stayed in my memory for years. On Steam, I only played it for 16 minutes, but this review is mostly based on my older experience with the game. I also played the remake on PlayStation 4, and because that version has better visuals, I probably will not return to this original 1997 version for a full playthrough again. Still, this game means a lot to me. It is my #45 game of all time.
Quick signals
💸 Value: ✅ Worth it 🖥️ Requirements: ✅ Runs on almost anything 🎨 Graphics: ✅ Old and pixelated, but iconic ⏱️ Length: ✅ Around 6–10 hours 📖 Story: ✅ Memorable 🎮 Difficulty: ✅ Challenging 🐛 Bugs: ➖ No major issue in my short Steam revisit
What I liked
* The atmosphere is unique and unforgettable. * Abe is an iconic main character. * The world, art style, sounds, and dark humor still have a special charm. * For a 1997 game, it had a strong identity and creative design. * It gave me many great memories as a child. * Even today, it works as a reminder of how original and different older games could be.
What didn’t work for me
* The original visuals are very old now. * The pixelated look may be hard to enjoy for newer players. * The remake is easier to recommend visually if someone wants a more modern version. * I personally do not feel the need to replay the original fully anymore.
Is it an endless game? How long to beat?
No, this is not an endless game. It is a classic story-based puzzle platformer. A normal playthrough can take around 6–10 hours, depending on skill, patience, and how many Mudokons you try to save.
Who will love it
Veterans of older PC and PlayStation games will probably appreciate it the most. You may enjoy it if you like classic puzzle platformers, darker atmosphere, old-school difficulty, strange worlds, and games with a very unique personality.
Replay value
Replay value is decent, especially for nostalgia or for players who want to save more Mudokons. For me personally, the original is now mostly a great memory. I would rather replay the remake because of the improved visuals, but I still respect the original a lot.
Final note
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is not a game I will probably replay fully in its original form again, but it is still very important to me. It gave me many childhood memories, and because of that, I can easily recommend it. Recommended, especially for veterans and players who still enjoy older pixelated classics.
10 \ 10 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
*Real playtime is on PS1* I am a huge fan of the immediate sequel of this game, called Abe's Exoddus. Recently, I've taken the time to play through this first game, going into it with the knowledge that it's "the same game but shorter and with a few less mechanics". I was wrong. Now I need to stress that this game is NOT atrocious by any means. The music, atmosphere, sound effects, characters designs, world building, etc. are masterclass and leagues ahead of today's games industry. Sadly, Oddysee flops badly in the gameplay department. The challenges and puzzles involved in making progress through this game are really, really awful. The solutions often involve having to do the last thing you'd logically think of, such as jumping into a well that launches you back into the air from right next to it, instead of jumping into it from on high, with the game never explaining that there's a difference. In general, a lot of progress is done by first faffing about for several minutes, before coming up to a precision timing or other critical point, which can be easily failed, then you have to watch the game load for 3 seconds, Abe spawn for 3 seconds and then spend the several minutes faffing about just to get back to the critical point again. I don't recommend getting this version as it has no emulation save states, which is something that you will need to make this game more bearable. If you think this game sucks, I do highly, HIGHLY recommend not skipping Exoddus, as the puzzles and challenges are far better designed in that game.
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is about everyone favorite farting Mudokon. One of my favorite video game characters of all time! Game has aged okay and is still fun to play after all these years!
extremely vibe based game with incredible artwork and heavy messaging that's fantastic to see, unfortunately it's brought down by what feels like a tutorial every screen for the entire first hour to then thrust you into the most obtuse puzzles known to mankind and no way to redo any situation where you may have messed up saving a mudokon. Like cool I need to save 100 of these guys but I'm just going to cut past the multiple screens of other mudokons if you're just going to tell me to go ♥♥♥♥ myself after I let one die. It doesn't help that when it feels like it's picking up out of the factory in the dark wilderness that it then halts you with a situation in which the only 2 exits are guarded by patrolling enemies you can't sneak past. You're not given any objects to throw or any way to avoid them. I'm not sure if there's a secret mechanic the game wasn't telling me about or if I genuinely had to fiddle with the platforming mechanics to somehow cheat my way to the next screen, but there certainly isn't a way to sneak jump or anything. Eventually the game after already forcing me into situations where mudokons would die if I hadn't already played beforehand, has now forced me into a situation where I need to runback multiple screens, wait patiently for patrols just to try my luck at the same passageway where there's not really a way to sneak past save for one path where maybe I can grab a ledge and lean back off it to maybe keep them from seeing me when they get alerted. Even then every movement I've tried hasn't allowed the grab and attempting to jump then crawl down off to hang has gotten me shot. I get if maybe the point is replayability, and of an era, but by the ps1 era it's just odd to see, especially when it already has rather hostile player mechanics with the prince of persia esque platforming, brutal runbacks, and a middle finger waiting for you if you don't save every single one of the mudokons. I'd still maybe recommend the game since It's on sale for less than a dollar, and genuinely I really think the world, messaging and art is a fantastic strong point that's only helped by the aging display methods and graphics.
Note: download the R.E.L.I.V.E mod before you play this! The pc port was made quite a while ago and some stuff doesn't run, look, or play in general like it did back in 1997. This mod fixes that! Legitimately one of my favorite games ever. Brilliant brilliant brilliant. It's hard without being too monotonous or cheap (though there are some gotchas lol). It's very morbid but still very funny, in a sharply observant, black comedy way. The sound design and music are great. It's easily the most immersed I've been in a game in a long time. The onboarding process with the controls is a little unforgiving, but once you learn it, it's actually incredibly precise. There is some very slight tedium at times because you can only call Mudokons one at a time in this, but oh well. It's still great. I played the remake before I played this version, and the remake isn't *bad*, but they drop some of the difficulty, which I quite like, and imo the controls mostly feel worse. The remake also removes some of the aesthetic sauce by making everything feel less weighty and brightening everything. If you can get it working, play this instead, and if it's too hard for your liking (nothing wrong with that fyi), try New & Tasty. I played this original version of Abe's Oddysee twice back-to-back because I didn't get the good ending the first time. There is so much charm and style that oozes from this game's pores. It is so bleak in its circumstances, and yet, without being hokey and instead perfectly sincere in its conviction, decides that the most radical action is community, hope, and love. I love that. Having played multiple iterations of Oddworld games over several years, I can say with confidence that Oddworld has genuinely improved my life, the best of compliments that I can give. The original devs should be proud. Abe's Oddysee is amazing. Now time to play Abe's Exoddus!
Sometimes levels in this game are a bit of a pain, but that difficulty is one of the best qualities about it. This is among the many great games from my childhood.
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a very fun puzzle platformer. It has some intense puzzles that can be fairly frustrating, but that's just what makes it that much more rewarding when you get all 99 Mudokons saved. It's a tough, but fairly short game. The save files suck though. If you restart the game, make sure you delete your previous save files first.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun this game turned out to be. It has a nice balance between challenge and accessibility.
