Disclaimer: I did not play CotC, which was the mobile game that evolved into OT:0. This game is also a prequel in the series. So my review for the second game was "only about 10x better than the original game". Well this game is about 100x better than both OT and OT:2 combined. A rather large roster of characters that are available party members, including the cast from the OT. Many of these characters have their own quests as well as are important story characters that frequently appear in major stories/arcs. Combat in this series sees continuous improvements from earlier installments. You have 8 active characters in battle and can cycle between them to make the most of your roster, with duplicate classes offering different advantages. This game is still grindy, which may not be something everyone wants. The story has a common trope at the beginning which for whatever reason, any RPG that has this trope is destined to be an amazing experience overall. The rest of the story features different arcs similar to prior games, but most arcs are only 3 chapters long, giving you a more variety if you don't particularly enjoy a specific arc. These arcs also feel longer, but that may just be my imagination. It's also worth mentioning these arcs evolve into other arcs further in the story, which keep the game feeling fluid and not just a feeling of "ok now we will never hear about any of this again", which imho both prior games were rather guilty of. Building a town was actually pretty fun, the questline tied to it made the town feel alive and the "growing" feeling was definitely present. I also really enjoyed having my own custom character, but I want to add that the custom character does not have their own voice acting during cutscenes, they only have VA during combat/path actions. Overall, this game is the best in the series and if you've played the prior 2 games, you will feel the evolution of the series in this game.
Octopath Traveler 0 has long storyline (I can say longer than 1 and 2). The gameplay is mostly same, but with some different mechanics, especially in job system. A lot of improvements. And most important thing is the story. I think this game has darker story than the rest. I always enjoyed the storyline of all Octopath Traveler series, but this one hit different for me. Overall, it's worth to buy.
Absolutely huge game with secrets galore, the combat system is a lot of fun (if a bit easy after a while) and the story is probably the most compelling of the three games for me.
A very watered down version of what made the first two games excellent, you can really feel the "mobile game port" oozing off this one. The town building is bare bones and boring, the story tries to be dark and edgy to the point of comedic and the combat system is super shallow. The soundtrack is mostly reused from the other two games. Most of the playable characters are lifeless and uninteresting and lack the personal stories that made the original so unique. Even the graphics are a big step down. It's just an absolute mess and wasn't worth the full price they asked for. Not sure I have it in me to even finish it. After the fourth "NPC dies in a horrific and tragic way" scene, I just stopped feeling anything. I think I'd rather just play the first two again.
Top tier music, great combat system, amazing job system, and excellent story. Graphics are very good.
The fundamental problem with this game is that it fails to accomplish what both mainline OT games accomplished. The other two games immediately injected me into the shoes of a compelling story. I could pick any one of the eight characters, and even if it was one of the ones I liked less, it still would have a reason for me to keep playing. By the end, those eight stories paid off, and there was a fulfilling final act after that. They did this for two games. However, OT0 is a pay once remake of a freemium game, with all the same storytelling problems of its original release. The protagonist is a solitary individual with no personality and a magic ring, opposite the eight characters full of personality. Sure, you can expand a town, but why bother when the game bores me? Then there's the drama itself. The OT games were good at doing harsh melodrama, feeling like classic anime and oldschool JRPG goodness I loved for decades, but OT0 tries and flounders at every moment. The original games gave us several villains each, all of which were epic and interesting, scary and oppressive. When playing OT0, I find the villains boring, lacking in personality, and uninteresting. Worse, there's no excuse because there's less villains, so they could have concentrated their writing effort to those three and made them big, but they're so bland that they fall flat. And that's basically the problem. OT0 is a hollow facsimile of Octopath Traveler 1 and 2. There's just no fixing that, and it's sad. Story triumphs over other qualities in an RPG, and I'm really not feeling OT0's story in the least.
I like the series, it's a fine game, but can we stop with the trope of letting war criminals walk free because "more bloodshed won't solve anything"? The characters in this game baacially just let Hitler go back to running Germany because he stopped killing people for a couple of days. Not really exaggerating. 🤦♂️
This game is pretty chill.
