Yeah.. no. The story seems to be written by a 13-year old who just discovered shock value plot twists. Real tired of this "pity the obviously evil person" bs. On top of that there are no weapon sprites, no sprites for any gear at all in fact. No advanced or hidden classes too, it seems. Hard pass. Don't be like me and waste your money on this. Octopath 2 had some questionable stories and gameplay decisions, but this is another level of stupid I can not put up with.
画面像素级精致,剧情童话级幼稚。 知小礼而无大义,这礼是送给魔鬼的兴奋剂,这义是捅在受害墓碑的刀。
Very disappointed by this game. There is a lot to appreciate in the first two games and I had a great time with them, it didn't feel like this entry measured up. The Issues: The Villains- The game has a much greater focus on the villains but the villain characters themselves are very weak characters. They are all insane psychopaths with no redeeming qualities or relatability. I have never found this kind of character interesting and having it be repeated makes it even more unlikeable. To me these characters were the biggest drag on the game, hard to keep playing with them being such an undeserved focus. The Combat- The moves are a bizarre mishmash. Lots of "Two strikes on random characters with chance of weakness effect,." Less AOE and clear attacks, it overcomplicates the battles and makes them less fun in my eyes. Characters: The core characters are fine and the city building they do together was actually my favorite part. The other members of the group are given no focus and with so many you don't know them well. The assisting NPC's are hard to get attached to given the sense that they could just be fodder to show more of how insane/terrible the villains are. Wish I could give it a better review but would recommend sticking with the first two games.
A solid addition to the Octopath Traveler series that I would definitely recommend! While showing its obvious roots as a mobile gacha game, the expansions and embellishments added when transferring to a single player game have on the whole worked. The story has very obvious act structures as a result of this inheritance, but enough interweaving has been done to provide an overarching skeleton that at least feels coherent, if not always particularly strong. The fun of exploring the world, discovering secrets, side quests, and using skills on NPCs remain as fun as they always were. Mechanically, it uses the same systems of the previous two entries in the series including break bars, multiple weapon and elemental damage types to hit weak points, and a turn based combat system. There is less general customization per character, on account of how many you can recruit, the one noticeable downgrade (or at least sidegrade) from the previous entries. A major innovation in this entry is the fact you can have 8 party members at a time, not just 4. These are arranged in a front and back row system that you can swap each pair between at your leisure during their turn. This is a great addition, allowing for increased tactical flexibility and a general faster pace of gameplay which I appreciated. If we could combine the faster combat engendered by this entry with the greater individual build customizations from previous entries, I think the series will hit new heights of its combat. Visually the game continues the series trend of beautiful HD-2D, with my system (admittedly quite hand end) having no drops, stutters, or issues, buttery smooth 120FPs at 4k. Whether the game is worth it at full price will likely depend on your experience with the series, but if it's on sale I'd say this is an easy buy. While you benefit a little from knowledge of the previous games, this one can stand alone for any newcomer.
I loved Octopath 1 and 2. I put 43 hours into this game, and enjoyed a good deal of what I played, and then randomly all of my saves got corrupted. Tried a bunch of different things online to fix it, but nothing worked, unfortunately. A huge bummer, to say the least.
Octopath Traveler 0 has long storyline (I can say longer than 1 and 2). The gameplay is mostly same, but with some different mechanics, especially in job system. A lot of improvements. And most important thing is the story. I think this game has darker story than the rest. I always enjoyed the storyline of all Octopath Traveler series, but this one hit different for me. Overall, it's worth to buy.
A very watered down version of what made the first two games excellent, you can really feel the "mobile game port" oozing off this one. The town building is bare bones and boring, the story tries to be dark and edgy to the point of comedic and the combat system is super shallow. The soundtrack is mostly reused from the other two games. Most of the playable characters are lifeless and uninteresting and lack the personal stories that made the original so unique. Even the graphics are a big step down. It's just an absolute mess and wasn't worth the full price they asked for. Not sure I have it in me to even finish it. After the fourth "NPC dies in a horrific and tragic way" scene, I just stopped feeling anything. I think I'd rather just play the first two again.
Disclaimer: I did not play CotC, which was the mobile game that evolved into OT:0. This game is also a prequel in the series. So my review for the second game was "only about 10x better than the original game". Well this game is about 100x better than both OT and OT:2 combined. A rather large roster of characters that are available party members, including the cast from the OT. Many of these characters have their own quests as well as are important story characters that frequently appear in major stories/arcs. Combat in this series sees continuous improvements from earlier installments. You have 8 active characters in battle and can cycle between them to make the most of your roster, with duplicate classes offering different advantages. This game is still grindy, which may not be something everyone wants. The story has a common trope at the beginning which for whatever reason, any RPG that has this trope is destined to be an amazing experience overall. The rest of the story features different arcs similar to prior games, but most arcs are only 3 chapters long, giving you a more variety if you don't particularly enjoy a specific arc. These arcs also feel longer, but that may just be my imagination. It's also worth mentioning these arcs evolve into other arcs further in the story, which keep the game feeling fluid and not just a feeling of "ok now we will never hear about any of this again", which imho both prior games were rather guilty of. Building a town was actually pretty fun, the questline tied to it made the town feel alive and the "growing" feeling was definitely present. I also really enjoyed having my own custom character, but I want to add that the custom character does not have their own voice acting during cutscenes, they only have VA during combat/path actions. Overall, this game is the best in the series and if you've played the prior 2 games, you will feel the evolution of the series in this game.
