I would suggest starting at the "How to Play" section. great strategy game with lots of decision making that can effect the outcome of the game. Between you and me, the negative reviews that will eventually show up , You have to really consider the mechanics of attacking, moving defending.... Hey, if this game was a person I would try to marry it *note for those of you with minds ruined by video games, that is a joke, I wouldn't try to marry the game,........... just date it for a while*.. Add * The interface is only complex until you have tried it a few times, once you do a couple play throughs you will pick this up with ease.
i'm on my 3rd game. first 2 were the north scenario. read the rules. interface is effecient. game is fun. first game played as US. lost mainly because i didn't draw any unit cards. i had a lot of event type cards. traffic jam, blow bridges etc. but didn't draw many units. second game also as US. got some units and blew 2 bridges. caused some traffic jams and had an easy time winning. a lot of strategy, decisions. so far so good. playing US south now.
Well.. my idllemaster ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up somehow and gave me 1 achievement before I even install the game.. so i figure.. what the heck.. let's give it a try... this is a risk type of battle chess game between USA and Germany.. Germany start with better less location but heavier and more dense units. While usa have more areas and cities to get more cards... Germany have to have certain number of mech unit acress to the usa defense line before 15 turns is up... Over all.. it's well thought out and well planned battle chess with a lot intersting randomness and fun cards to use. The graphics is decent and music is .. well.. repeating war song that I don't hate.. 2 games later.. i do enjoy this a bit.. but this game have issues which make me turn my review into negative for now.. 1. AI.. well AI is not too smart.. AI units charge your defense position with impossible odds instead of waiting it out.. and don't defense strategicly... don't use a lot of cards.. it must be improved else human win every games. 2. Bugs.. yes.. many many bugs still left in this game... I once drag a reenforce unit to play in chess region but it got stuck in mid air and won't move.. blocks the center of my screen and it's not return to the starting location... i can no longer click it to move it. even after i click turn end. There is also one time. I use the card join attack to attack from 2 location, while the computer ask me to select two location. I clicked to use another card to negate one famous general ability... Which cause neither of cards goes into effect. And i am stuck that clicking nothing works on the screen. i cannot even click turn end. Above are the two major one I have met after 3.5 hours of play... As it's current status.. i cannot recommend it right now. May come back to it if this game gets it's bugs fixxed so i will work on rest of my achievements. 6.5/10 for now.. if it's bug free i would give it a 7.5 .. and yes.. not recommended to play right now.. avoid until bugs are fixed. I have made it thumb up right now so it would improve the rate of approval for now since it's not that bad of a game...
A nice card game, wrapped in a finicky program.
The card game
The card game is an asymmetrical battle, stimulating the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and Northern France at the end of '44, where Germany marched into Allied territory. So the Axis forces outnumber the Allied forces in the start of the game, and they have to try to push six squares in 15 turns. The Allied receive better reinforcements each turn. Cards can be units (legs or mech, which can move 1 or 2 spaces per turn, and they are valued in numbers with artillery, tank and infantry, which attack in order by diceroll), terrain or events. The asymmetrical part is really nice, because it's a very different game what side you are playing. Some reviewers compare it with Risk or Chess, however I can't see any resemblance with another game.
Digitalisation
I haven't played the physical game, so I can't really tell if the conversion is faithful, but I assume it is. The game is presented without a tutorial or any kind of guidance. There is a text manual inside, but not very attractively presented. For some reason it never became clear to me where what reinforcements are allowed to enter the battle, I just followed the green indicator. The AI is bad... The way to win is to let the AI spread their forces, which she likes to do, and concentrate your own. The AI will destroy itself upon your wall. It would be nice if the dicerolls were presented on screen.
My experience
My first two battles I lost vigorously, without understanding the rules. One of those times, I built a thin defenseline, responded by the AI with a card to ignore my units and double moving past me. But I pushed on, committing to complete the game. While I enjoyed the card game, the program around it is a bit clunky. It one of those classic cases to recommend this game or not, and a this one falls towards the not-pile. It's a shame that the overall assessment is mostly negative, it's not that bad...
'Nuts!'?
During the historical battle, the Germans proposed that the Allied surrendered with an ultimatum to the general. When the general read this ultimatum, he crumbled the letter to a ball and threw it away with the words: 'aw, nuts!' The officers used this statement as official response to the Germans, like: To the German Commander. NUTS! The American Commander. The Germans didn't understand this statement, so the delivering officer explained: 'Go to hell!' The general didn't like to use profanity, his staple expression was 'nuts!'. NOTE: I DID PAY FOR THIS GAME This is a card game, played on a 5x6 (or 3x6) chess-like board. It’s a very abstract representation of the Battle of the Bulge, there are two sides (Allies and Germany), two scenarios (North and South) and the full “campaign”, the German player objective is to push a given number of units to the other side of map, the Allies goal is to prevent that from happening. The game is extremely easy and quick, a scenario can take up to 30 minutes and the full campaign probably 1 hour. It’s fun and can be quite addictive until you have completed all scenarios. PROS: + Easy, entertaining enough card game + The AI does a decent job when playing on the defence (Allies) + The event cards are indeed interesting CONS - Once you’re done with the campaign, there’s very little replayibilty - At full price, it’s quite overpriced: get it on strong sale - The AI does a poor job on the attack (Axis) - Some non game-breaking bugs, still annoying OVERALL: 6/10
(Dulce bellum inexpertis.)
I played the Full Map and won both my first two games as Germans then USA. The UI I found to be a bit clunky and using the special card Reconstitution is really a waste of time as there is no "dead unit card pile" to sort through. I found it difficult to use or even see how to use some of the cards, maybe I'm missing something. Also there were a few bugs were cards did not work or seem too, as it's not too clear sometimes. The AI in both games I Played, would quite frequently attack with one unit against crazy odds. I Paid 99p which is a fair price to look at the graphics and have a couple of games. I ownthe original Game, Both cards sets and enjoyed that in face to face play. Unfortunatley this is not quite up to the mark for me.
It's so riddled with bugs that it's literally unplayable.
