About
This game was made in Pixel Game Maker MV and runs at 30 FPS. Game language, screen size, screen shake, and key config settings can be accessed by pressing the F1 key on your keyboard. Other settings can be changed in the OPTIONS menu in-game.
Welcome to Nitro City, Tokyo Special Administrative Region! The metropolis of Tokyo is a bit different from what we know, but the streets are just as nostalgic, or, depending on where you're from, they're just as good as the place you've always wanted to visit.

Autonomous drones, affectionately called "Companions", have been integrated into daily life, but in cop terms, they're referred to as "Atypical Vehicles".
When they pose a significant threat to society, it's time for the Atypical Vehicle Disposal Squad (AVDS)—a special unit of the Nitro City police force—to commence their mission to destroy all rogue vehicles!

Good news: you can bring as much ammo as you want... and that includes grenades!
After just a little bit of cooldown, the lightning bolt of destruction will return to your hands. Ah, how wonderful! Just like magic!

Tired of traditional grenades? Why not try out the EMP, damage-dealing radio-controlled drones, auto-firing turrets, flamethrowers, anti-tank missiles, and more? There's sure to be at least one out of the 12 different cool gadgets that'll catch your eye.

By assuming a more stable shooting position, your bullets will hit targets more accurately and deal more damage.
You can shoot some guns like SMGs while walking without caring about that, since they're for close-range anyway, but the bigger the gun, the more it's affected by your positioning. Stand still and aim carefully to use them properly.

Oh no! We're under attack by tanks and helicopters! Whatever can we do~?!
Rifles and SMGs don't do much to armored targets. You could totally stick with them and show them your perseverance, but you could hit them harder where it hurts with more powerful firearms and gadgets.

Story dialogue in stages are all contained in the police radio comms, which can be accessed at anytime and are completely optional. Which means you can ignore them completely if you want.
Great for multiple playthroughs, or for people who think the story sections of video games are basically the same as the instruction manual of an electric toothbrush.

There's more fun where that came from!

This is a really great and fun game with a funny story. there’s only one downside: the mouse movement feels very heavy. Even after turning up the sensitivity, it just feels even weirder. Overall, the game is excellent and highly engaging.
A short and neat twin stick shooter. It has a good variety of weapons to unlock, as well as secondary special items. The default control scheme can be a tiny bit weird until you get used to it, or you can choose alternate ones. The animations and art are very good. Sadly it is locked to 30 fps, but there's mods to modify it so it can run at 60 fps.

In a world where the Japanese metropolitan police have infinite money use lasers, rifles and an RPG we got off the Yakuza to destroy rogue robots and save the citizens of Tokyo and decimate the local fish population (this is a fishing minigame with guns and it's actually quite good Anyway, good little game can't recommend more
Its price is a little steep but its a charming game for all of its thorns, a good game to snag on sale and play for a few sessions for ten or twenty hours. The characters and art are very cute, the story is pretty decent and had a strong ending, the gameplay is pretty decent with a decent amount of variety in weapon/gadget loadouts and unlockables. The soundtrack is BANGIN. There's a handful of touchy issues you should be aware of:

Framerate locked to 30 FPS makes the action a little chunky and difficult to follow sometimes.
Identifying where your character is in the chaotic mess of everything exploding can be a challenge. The game's art direction does a pretty decent job of distinguishing most things at a basic level, but areas can get extremely busy and hard to follow.
Controls and responsiveness could have used some work. Jumping and landing has a recovery period that can make it awkward to cleanly dodge things. Rolling is tied to crouching and moving in any direction, which can be problematic when trying to jump a specific direction from a roll. Gadget slots are tied to weapon slots which was not immediately apparent and makes it rather clunky to use the gadget you want for the specific situation.
The game has a somewhat odd choice of encouraging the use of stable stances for damage bonuses (crouching does more damage than standing and moving, for example). This leads to a lot of times where you want to momentarily crouch to deliver high damage and then need to move right after, but as mentioned the somewhat clunky and overlapping controls do not make this feel intuitive.
Lots of actions like melee lock you in place or cancel existing animations which makes their use not feel very fluid. Not being able to swap weapons in the middle of a reload is another thing that makes controls feel clunky.
The game is somewhat short. There's 8 story missions and 20 "bonus" missions which are mostly just challenge scenarios that follow somewhat similar layouts or boss usage from the main mission with an added twist or added enemy spawns.
All that being said the game is not overly insanely difficult or punishing but it was certainty enough for me to need to restart a few times and consider alternative weapons for the level. Once I was able to find gaps or strategies that worked I could usually do the levels pretty easily, but I never really felt like I was being pigeonholed into a singular loadout or strategy.
I can't recommend an arcade style game that can't be played with an arcade stick. Forcing you to use D-pad and analog sticks simultaneously, R3 and so on makes it impossible to even complete the first steps in the tutorial with an arcade stick, which is extremelly annoying. I just closed the game 5 minutes into it, stuck in the very first character movement tutorial. I appreciate the effort and I think I'll keep it (not asking for a refund, though I haven't made up my mind yet) but if the devs listen to feedback from users: please SIMPLIFY DRASTICALLY the input system and REDUCE the number of buttons needed (i.e. crouch with down, kick with shoot+right/left next to a kickable object, slide with diagonal down+jump), make it D-pad only (no thumbsticks AT ALL) and you'll have a much better game. Metal Slug wasn't only great for its graphics but for its COMPLEX SIMPLICITY: 8 directions, three buttons, and the characters can shoot, throw bombs, hit with a knife in short range, jump, aim in every direction (even while jumping, in the air), jump in and out the tanks, throw the tank as a projectile/bomb... Nitro Express is regrettably the exact oposite: thousand action buttons needed and directionals too, and you cannot even aim diagonally. It feels overwhelmingly limited in movement despite the huge ammount of buttons and thumbsticks that it craves. I'm sorry but that's a horrible design flaw. My recommendation for you, run'n'gun lovers and hardcore players reading this: Do NOT buy unless... 1. ... you're a control pad/keyboard player. 2. ... you're an arcade stick or hitbox player who has $500+ USD available to burn building a fully custom layout arcade stick/hitbox with lots of extra buttons for all of the thumbstick directions, R3, L3 etc that regular and official arcade sticks lack.
A charming Metal Slug-lite, done in a cute pixel anime style. The variety of enemies isn't very high, but the game gives you an impressive & entertaining variety of weapons to try out on them. The characters and the plot are done in the classic moé anime style, like if you combined Lucky Star and an unused Richard Donner script. If you like Metal Slug and you like cute anime girls, give this game a look.
