I can't say that I don't like the game, as, conceptually, I do. Unfortunately, the faux-interlacing effect that the game has destroys my eyes, and gives me a headache after ~15 minutes of playing. We moved away from interlaced monitors for a reason, and it wasn't because an artificially-generated interlacing effect is somehow less annoying. Unfortunately, as another reviewer mentioned, there are no video settings at all. No option to choose your resolution, no option to disable the interlacing effect, and, seemingly not even an INI file I can edit to change settings. It checks your hardware, and sets things how it feels like they should be configured, and that's all. Add an option to disable interlacing so that I can get into the game a bit, and I might recommend it. Edit: The game is much more playable at 1080P, thanks to the new resolution settings, but the interlacing still bothers me - though, not nearly as much as it used to. I would still like to see the ability to disable the interlacing effect - though, being able to set the resolution to my monitor's native 1440p might help enough to get by. Here's to hoping it continues to improve. Thanks for listening to your customers. Hopefully I will be able to play soon, to be able to give you a full updated review... but we will see how long I can play with the interlacing effect!
Pros: - Nice art style Cons: - Unskippable cutscenes - Long boring dialogues - Terrible controls - CRT effect that can not be turned off 3/10
Game would be good and entertaining one in it's genre, but it has too many flaws and in fact one that will make last outside area and last boss quite darn hard to beat. First boss you encounter in game is brother of shopkeeper who will sell you such upgrades as triple jump, life extension and gears which give chance to get another upgrade in characters abilities. These abilities would be very much needed in the last boss and later areas in game due double jump will not give you enough boost to reach platforms or hit the boss. So basically i have now crying shopkeeper whom with can't interact and get vital upgrades to beat last boss as can't reach and hit him. Wall climbing and getting pair of hits is too slow and there is so much bullethell stuff along with mobs than you will die to those since it takes so long to beat boss that way and mana doesn't recharge fast enough to push through with flaming skull circle spell well and those do vanish with collision of other things than boss. Flaws seen in the game. - Slide tends to be very minor distance and is quite useless, sometimes it does trigger longer distance slide. - Double jump tends not to work at some points and game just sucks up the other jump. - Wall grip won't happen at some points and for some reason does work on same kind of place in other part of the castle, but then again not in the other. - Shortcuts and no teleporting possibilities. Tons of backtracking and those shortcuts often just kill you. - Minion and spells reject each other, you can have tiny helper who smacks mobs, but will hit you if you kill his pals and those things are everywhere so you can't use spells beside lightning one as these little things die from anything you do. - Some platforming areas suffer from bad decisions like unpassable ridable objects and close zoom because of which you can't see what's before you so basically you will take tons of leap of fates and die trying or get lucky. - If you don't lie shopkeeper about death of his brother you will not get vital upgrades. - Stunlock, you will get this ton as dmg immunity time is non existent and if you fall on spikes it's miracle if you get out of there before dying due this feature. I pushed through till the end boss and was annoyed quite much by latest outside area as didn't have needed skill meant for it due game not letting me get it. Did reach overall almost 99% of the map still with double jump skill so it's probably possible to beat the game with only it, but so damn much harder that i'm thinking of first time in long time dropping a game did like. This game has just too many flaws that could recommend it to other people if those would be fixed it would be quite fun game in it's genre and worthwhile to check out. If you decide to get this one, remember to lie to the shopkeeper about the death of his brother so you won't get locked out without skills that will help so much during this game.
A really fun little Metroidvania game that is literally family friendly. A 5 year old can play this and enjoy it and a 50 year old can play this and enjoy it as well as everyone in between. The graphics are charming, the combat is rewarding and challenging right from the get go (depending on set difficulty). Has a nice retro filter if you're into that, it can be toggled on or off, so you don't HAVE touse it. Definitely worth the 10 dollars it costs.
No options to change resolution or pick desired viewing mode such as windowed, borderless, or fullscreen. This game forces a specific resolution in fullscreen because reasons. Cannot recommend this to anyone with a basic feature such as viewing preference customization removed for the end user.
This is a really cute Metroidvania/platformer. It is the right amount of spooky for Halloween and has a lot of charm. There are many colorful enemies, backrounds and friendlies, which is really refreshing in our current dark gloomy trends in gaming. At the time of writing this I appear to be about 75% along in the game and around 5 hours in. This game seems to be a little on the challenging side for a mostly casual gamer like myself. I did end up switching the difficulty to easy, but that's after playing through a ton of Cuphead recently and getting tired of dying a lot in. I do want to make a point to say the music is really good. It helps to push the game even more towards Castlevania, which is great for me. For under $10, it's a great game for fans of Castlevania, or for people that like Metroidvanias and want something a little different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bEoHf17H-g
First time I ever see a game pulled from a bundle such shortly after the sale's start (https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/HiN4Y/indiegala-badland-publishing-bundle) (PS: ♥♥♥♥ Steam for censoring links) That being said, bad game anyway: - Meh art style (I guess some people may like it... it's special, and I find it rather ugly) - Unskippable cutscenes (why do devs still do this? Have they never played a game where unskippable cutscenes drove them mad?) - Bad controls (poorly responsive)
One of the worst metroidvanias I've ever played in recent years. Enemies do so much damage- even if you run into them. Camera moves all over the place making it extremely frustrating to see what's below. Map is useless: Shows where you are and where you've discovered, but that's it. Hope you remembered those save and shop locations, otherwise you're screwed! Speaking of save points...you have to use in game currency to save. First time it's "free", second is 50 gems, then 100, then 150 etc. Adds up quick. Killing enemies rewards gems but they spew all over the place instead of just dropping. No fast travel and lots of annoying backtracking. Can't skip dialogue. And theres so much of it, especially during simple events like save points and shops. Frustrating design. Save your game, then go through a section of enemies and platforming, THEN go fight a boss with what health you have left. If you die? Do it all over again. Graphics and music are good but doesn't save this awful game. Go play Ghost 1.0 or Bloodstained instead.
