Introduction
I was interested in The Guise ever since I browsed through its Steam’s Store Page. A dark, twisted fairy tale with the promise of playing as a frightening, evolving monster? And all that accompanied by fantastic, eerie visuals? Count me in! Well, to my unpleasant surprise, even with having glamorous visuals, the rest of the game is rather bland, uninteresting, and mainly, it is boring to play it in the first place.
Story
You play as Ogden, an abandoned child living in an orphanage with other kids. One night, your headmistress has to leave the kids alone for a bit. They had but one rule to follow: do not visit her workroom. Being curious little kids, they, of course, venture right into the room. There is a lot of weird magical-looking stuff, as well as a big white mask. Ogden decides to put it on his face, which changes his life forever. It turns him into a four-legged monster. Once the headmistress finds out, she tells him that there is only one person that can help you. And you have to find the said person on your own. While this intro seemed interesting to me at first, there is not much else. The headmistress just repeats the abovementioned line until the very end of the game, which is easily predictable and absolutely forgettable. You can talk with the other kids for a bit, but they repeat themselves too. While they offer you sidequests, those do not add much to the story and are pretty short. Yes, one could argue that the environment and your journey to the end tell its own story, but this is not the case. It tries to do that, but as it is not very much in-depth, it fails to do its job. There are only a few tiny environmental hints here and there, but they are blatantly obvious. In the end, I never cared about Ogden and the orphanage, nor I was curious about the world itself, which is a shame because I believe that the initial thought behind the story could lead to something much better. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2289033117
Gameplay
The Guise is yet another Metroidvania game in which you explore the world, learn new powers, and revisit previous locations to uncover previously unobtainable secrets. I explored this world in detail, which took me around seven hours. Although I actually spent more time with the game because it crashed and deleted my progress during my first playthrough. And after starting a new one, the first boss was invincible for some reason and did not even attack me, so I could not progress any further. Most unfortunate. Luckily, an update got released, but I had to start the game from scratch again. The gameplay’s premise is quite simple: you kill enemies to get eyes for which you upgrade your abilities, which you get for slaying the bosses. There are also artefacts which boost the said abilities. That is about it. You spend most of the time in combat because there are tons of enemies everywhere. Here comes the problem, though. There is not much depth in the game’s combat. And it is unbalanced and a bit broken at the same time! How could that be? Well, the enemies can only attack the left or right side. Not both at the same time. So, once they are slowly preparing to attack the left side, you just go behind them and hit them as much as you can. You repeat this tactic until they are dead. The problem is that they are way too slow to react to that. You fight most of the enemies like that, even half of the bosses. It is not challenging nor enjoyable. Sometimes your or enemies’ attacks even do not register properly, so that just adds to this mess. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2289033482 Fortunately, there is a solution for that! After the very first boss fight, you get an ability – poisonous spitting. You even get an artefact which boosts its damage by fifty percent, and you can upgrade it right after, so you spit two projectiles instead of one. How does this solve the problem? It instakills most of the enemies without even approaching them. Is it fun? No, but at least you do not have to bother with the abovementioned melee combat. It also deals massive damage to bosses. The problem is that there are other abilities, which were intended for use, like increased damage to demons. However, there is no reason to do that, as spitting is stronger. What I said might be viewed as a rant, but the problem is that there is not much else to say about the combat except pointing out how it does not work. To give credit where it is due, some of the bosses were quite enjoyable to fight, as they had interesting and unique attack patterns. Some other bosses felt like fighting basic enemies with more health, though… There are also questionable design decisions. Later on, you get an ability to dive in the water, which lets you explore locations even more. However, the last part of the game takes place mostly underwater. How is that bad? The movement is slower there, and you cannot use your abilities there, so the fights return to the abovementioned monotonous way. My character also randomly died there during loading into the new location. The last moments of such games should provide a challenge, requiring you to use everything you have learned so far, not stripping everything off. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2289033690
Audiovisuals & Performance
The audiovisuals are what this game shines in. The art style is glamorous, where each location looks a bit unique, with its own dark, immersive atmosphere. Admiring some sceneries is the only thing I looked forward to in this game. While there are a lot of greyish and darkish colours, it occasionally shows more vivid ones too. The sounds add to the atmosphere a lot, especially the soundtrack, which compositions fit the game’s theme very well. I can only praise the developers in this part. The game was tested with an i5 8300H, GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB RAM, running at the highest settings, at 60 frames per second, at 1920x1080 resolution. Although my framerate was stable most of the time, it went down even to 30 frames in random locations. It was usually just a quick framerate drop rather than a constant change, but it was still a bit annoying.
Conclusion
All in all, beautiful audiovisuals are not enough, especially when the game is boring to play in the first place. Unfortunately, there is no reason to give this game a try. I usually do not like to judge the game by its price, but as you can get masterpieces like Hollow Knight for a similar amount of money, then there is no reason for getting this game at all. And that is indeed a shame, as the premise looked so promising… Maybe the next time. Hello friends, Today i will review the game THE GUISE. This is a story about a child who lives in a orphanage and sneeks into the matron's room and finds a weird mask. His friends dare him to put the mask on, and it turns him into a monster. Now he must find a way to remove the mask and become human again, but the quest is not easy. This game is a light metroidvania. It has some backtracking to find items that can be useful and powers to powerup your character. It also includes a upgrade system to upgrade abilities. Anyways, here are my pros and cons: PROS: - A interesting story about a kid becoming a monster. - Controller support for the game. I used a logitech F310. - The developer is still actively improving the game. They even fixed a bug i found when i mentioned it on the forum. - Multiple endings depends on a choice you make. - Powerups and upgrades. - Amulets to help out the hero. - Sidequests to find and finish. CONS: - When the game loads up, it takes awhile to load up the game. - Sometimes when loading a new area, the game freezes up and stays a black screen. This only happened twice to me. Although people say this is like the game hollow knight, i believe this game was more inspired by that game, and then the developer put a spin on it to make their own game. The game is pretty decent light metroidvania, and the achievements are pretty easy to get for achievement hunters. It is also fun to try to find everything. I recommend this game for the interesting storyline and metroidvania type play is fun.
A promising concept turns out to be mediocre That headline pretty much sums up my feelings about The Guise. I was interested in the game when I saw the first screenshots as it looked eerie which is something I'm always up to. The premise of playing as a protagonist turning into a monster that kind of evolves as the game progresses sounded great so I picked up the game on sale and gave it a try. Roughly 4 hours later and having beaten the game I can't help but feel the game is lacking in some departments. While the artstyle is pretty well done and delivers a spooky atmosphere the soundtrack on the other hand can't really keep up with it. It's mostly ambient piano sounds that tend to the background rather than being memorable. Even the boss music isn't really dramatic. Which brings me to my main issue - the gameplay To make it clear: I'm generally looking for challenge in the games I play but not every single one needs to be nailbiting hard and The Guise is most definitly on the easy side. I died maybe a handful of times throughout the course of the game but the bossfights were pretty disappointing. Apart from one that caught me by surprise I managed to kill every boss first try without much struggle, even the final boss. Now that of course comes down to personal skill and I'm sure others might have some more trouble but still I think no boss was challenging by any means. Most of the time you can simply roll past them, get a few hits and and then repeat. Which is also the case for the regular enemies. The combat gets dull really fast as all it takes is roll past enemies and hit them from behind until they're dead. Not a lot of skill needed. Actually, you can also simply run past everything and go straight to the bosses if you're not out to grind some currency to upgrade abilities. Speaking of those, only one active ability turned out to be useful, which is the poison spit ability that you get after beating the first boss. It is pretty overpowered and can even be upgraded twice to get 2 respectively 3 shots off at a time, leaving most enemies no chance to survive. Even bosses take massive damage and get half their life or more taken out before you run out of magic energy. Every other ability seems completely redundant and I found no use for them. Same goes for the familiars and amulets. The first ones you get are the most useful, the others don't serve any real purpose. Apart from the main quest you'll also run into some NPC that give you some side objectives but none other than again the first one help too much or add to the experience. One in particular is even broken and repeats on an endless loop. You're tasked to kill rats in a house which is very simply but after exiting the NPC simply tells you to do it again in the basement (which is NOT in the house, unless there's a secret entrance I'm not aware of). After finishing the game with the first ending there were still a couple of sidequests left but I have no desire to go through the game again. It didn't feel satisfying. The Guise has a good concept but fails to deliver a satisfying experience so unless you're looking for a quick metroidlike in between (which it is) get it when it's on sale. In my opinion it's not worth the full asking price.
Хороший платформер,на пару часов точно затянет) 10 сморкающихся драконов из 10 Геймплей - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Xc_6iK-u0
More of a no, then a yes. The game as it is is just... too boring. Bare bones of the "metroid" gameplay. Controls are... okayish. Bosses are ununspiring copies of themselves, attacks are just the same. Ending is a "Congratulations" screen and "you choose to kill a real bad guy" ending. Story can fit into one paragraph of text, and we can count ALL dialogs in game there. I think even for a small indie game - there could be more.
"The Guise" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is a really badly ported Nintendo Switch "metroidvania" style platformer. The quality of the game itself is on par with the quality of the Nintendo Switch port - awful. The idea is that you're a kid in an orphanage, you put on a mask that turns you into a monster and you have to go find "someone" to turn you back into a little orphan boy. Okay. I guess it should be acknowledged that this is a genuinely made game, doesn't come across as a cash grab or asset flip... but when that's the best thing that can be said about a game, you know we're going to have a bad time. The graphics are very poor quality, the game is clearly translated into English from some other language (Russian I think). The gameplay is on the same level, boring, repetitive... there's also some game breaking bugs, but you might be lucky and not run into them. You could be even luckier by not owning this game. The game starts out more like a 2D adventure game but then you get into the platforming with a little bit of fighting, and that's where the excruciating boredom and tedious lack of quality really hammer this experience underground. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this game. The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content. Those technical issues put this game beneath what is expected from a contemporary, professionally developed PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 12 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? The Guise has the ridiculous price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Batman: Arkham Asylumn", "X-Com: Enemy Unknown" or "Just Cause 3". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. The quality problems and defects with this game makes the asking price totally unrealistic. It's impossible to recommend this to gamers here on Steam.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Got all achievements and finished game with time played. Pros: -I enjoyed the platforming, abilities, and customization -Low price -The worldbuilding was excellent, and I enjoyed most of the enemy designs. -Thought the story was pretty good, enjoyed that there was a choice at the end Cons: -Game has more than one way to softlock. I received 4, and none of them were the same (1- talked to NPC, 2- map transitioned back and forth, 3- underwater portion disabled up/down and moved insanely fast left/right, 4- attempted to open a locked chest) -Several glitches impacted game enjoyment. Particularly, some death zones would push you into the previous map, respawning all enemies on the current map you were clearing. If there was any elevation in ground geometry, turning around would put your character slightly in the air, making it impossible to -Some areas are not very inspired level design. Tons of enemies in a flat area, guarding nothing. -While there was a good variety in bosses, it felt like most of them were a bit on the easy side. I never lost to a boss, though maybe that's an issue with ability/amulet balance. Overall, I'd say it's worth the price of 5 dollars in its current state. I'd not recommend it if the price were 10+ dollars.
