Pandemic creativity with a definite 2020 vibe. More fascinating than frightening
This is a curious time capsule born straight out of lockdown creativity. A FMV where actors never physically interact and only exist through webcams and screens, which is honestly clever given the context. You follow a translator tangled in occult translation business, lots of ominous calls, hidden secrets, and very familiar horror beats. It’s cliché-heavy, but I’ll admit the premise pulled me in more than expected. Choices are quick to appear and frequent, with 15 endings and over 200 unique scenes to uncover, which sounds impressive on paper. There are also some thoughtful accessibility options like subtitle size and color, brightness settings, and the ability to remove decision timers. Sadly, the execution doesn’t fully keep up with the ambition. The acting is…rough. So rough it occasionally loops back around to being unintentionally entertaining. The story feels rushed too. There was room here for something closer to a full-length movie, but at around 50 minutes per run, everything feels compressed and undercooked. Despite the tense atmosphere, it’s not particularly scary, and replaying to see alternate endings is more exhausting than exciting since there’s no way to skip directly to choices. You’re committing to rewatching large chunks every time, which dampens the curiosity even for completionists. Still, as an example of what creators managed to cobble together during isolation, it’s fascinating in its own awkward way. Just don’t go in expecting a polished FMV experience when there are far stronger ones out there. Outside of pure artistic curiosity, it's sadly not worth it, even on sale. The game is so bad that it's good. I refuse to believe the script wasn't written by an 8 year old. Acting is equal as amateuresque. To the developer's credit, I watched the FMV from start to finish and didn't even realize that it was already over so I clearly enjoyed it in a weird way.
Nota 5/10
It could have been good, but it isn't. Compared to the FMV games I've played so far, this is the weakest one yet. It's a shame that so much potential has been wasted, because the idea is pretty good—and by idea, I mean the webcam scenario as an “observer.” The plot itself is terrible—if you're going to curse, do it right. Everything seems very unnatural and unbelievable. The main actress isn't bad, but the others are annoying. Really annoying. Especially the husband or this Max guy. It took me about 56 minutes to complete my first playthrough before the curse struck me. Suddenly it ended. Compared to other similar games, I have no motivation to play this one again to see the other endings and get the achievements. It has been proven many times that Wales Interactive can develope good FMV games – the best examples are Dead Reset (incredibly good and must-have) or The Complex (very good actors and well produced) or Bloodshore (somehow funny and entertaining) . I wouldn't feel comfortable giving thies game a positive review. I just didn't enjoy it because somehow nothing about it feels right. I bought this game as part of a bundle and it only cost me about €1.70, it's not a big loss.
🧧 NEGATIVE STEAM REVIEW – Malaysian Aunty Style (Mangles Edition) 🧧 Game: Night Book
Aiyo… this one ah… I thought horror game. End up… Zoom meeting simulator kena haunted.
💻 FIRST IMPRESSION:
You open game, wah laptop screen only. Whole game is you watching one woman sit in front of computer like she doing Grab customer service night shift. I thought horror… but feels like overtime job with demon included free.
🎮 GAMEPLAY (or lack of…):
This one say “interactive” ah. But actually… You click choice once every few minutes like replying WhatsApp. And even then, the choice like: - Be scared - Be slightly more scared Walao… binary choice until I feel like exam MCQ question. Critics also say the interactivity very weak and frustrating, like just for show only
👻 HORROR:
Scary ah? Auntie answer honestly: No. The horror tropes all recycled like yesterday fried rice. - creepy video call - weird chanting - sudden loud noise Everything already overused until can predict faster than weather forecast. Even reviewers say the game rely on “tired horror tropes” and not thrilling at all
🎭 ACTING:
Okay lah… some acting decent. But sometimes… feel like low budget drama from Astro at 3AM. Some scenes serious… but come out funny. Got one moment I laugh instead of scared.
📖 STORY:
Story got potential — ancient book, demon, cursed reading… Sounds solid right? But execution ah… ike cook maggi but forget seasoning. Very predictable, very draggy, then suddenly end. Critics also say story is “paint-by-numbers” and nothing special
⏱ LENGTH:
Finish one playthrough: less than 1 hour. Aiyo… I boil egg also longer. Yes got multiple endings… but difference so small like kopi ais vs kopi kurang ais. Even reviews say replay endings feel repetitive and not worth it
🧠 EXPERIENCE:
Playing this game feels like: You join family Zoom call, internet lag, aunties shouting, someone say ghost story… then suddenly meeting end. That’s it.
👍 PROS (Auntie trying to be kind):
✔ Unique FMV concept ✔ Can play casually (no brain needed) ✔ Short (thankfully)
👎 CONS (Auntie full complain mode):
✖ Not really a game, more like YouTube video ✖ Choices useless like expired Tesco voucher ✖ Horror not scary, just cliché ✖ Story predictable ✖ Replay value fake one
🧧 FINAL VERDICT:
Aiyo… this one ah… Not terrible until cannot play… but also not good until worth your time. It’s like: You order horror… get webinar.
⭐ Auntie Rating:
4.5 / 10 — “Can watch… but why not just watch Netflix?” If discount RM5 okay lah… play with friends, laugh at it. But if you expecting real horror + meaningful choice… Auntie say: close laptop, go sleep better.
I'm not certain I would call this game superb, but it's certainly an experience worth having. It's creative considering the limitations. Some parts of the story don't transition too well, but it's interesting nonetheless. I also really like our main actress' performance! Basically, if you're looking for a more serious, professional story, this probably isn't for you. If you're looking for a silly thriller to pass the time, this is great!
