it's not Perfect but it has Life
Got the game, sat down, played through every part of it I could get my hands on (DLC seems to be down for the time being but I'll play that too when it pops back up). So that pretty much speaks for itself. I'll replay too, to get the achievements I somehow missed. I enjoyed this game! I liked the characters and the story, and it feels like the world setting is interesting (though more game would help expand this and flesh it out). I did want a bit more of an exploration time where I wasn't required to run errands and such to propel the main story forward (basically I just wanted to be a "doordash" librarian for awhile, but that might just be me). I do feel like this could be a HUGE game that is a lot bigger with longer pacing and more reveals. But I also wish I could fly? So that's not super helpful and I only mention it because I wanted MORE (as in, content and play time)! So that's my one downside--lots more please (more lore, character interactions, locations...everything). 10/10!
That's game is absolutely amazing, and deserve more views, popularity and recognition
I don't often leave reviews but I really enjoyed this game and it impacted me in a big way. Alex's story is relatable for many of us who have been made to feel out of place in society for our identity and the opportunity to trace a romantic path for him in book 2, while short, feels extremely meaningful. I truly appreciate the message behind the game and while initially I was skeptical about the story and thought it wasn't making much sense, I started to go with the flow and saw that the story takes a backseat to the emotional and psychological experiences of the characters, which are mostly well-developed and in my opinion relatable for a wide audience since they touch on universal themes. The only thing I don't understand is how to play the winter DLC. If anyone knows how to play it please let me know! I tried hitting play from the DLC but it loads the regular game and I can't find the winter story. I truly hope to see a book 3 in the future <3
This game was absolutely beautiful, and lovely. Very short and sweet, but got me SUPER emotional!
A touching queer narrative game with some light combat elements. I really liked the themes and characters' stories! Make sure you play both books - Return to Otherwhere is where things really started to shine for me, building on the foundations of the first book. There were some lines I found especially resonant, like
becoming less joyful because you're trying to manage how people see you, and parents "wanting their smiling child back", someone's insistence on using a birth name instead of a character's new name because it would be disrespectful of the parents' choice, etc
. I had a few quibbles with the game, but nothing that really affected my experience. The writing itself wasn't super polished, the combat felt clunky, and I found the first book's premise both a little straight-forward (in a hero's journey sense), and confusing (a lot of time/text was spent on the houses when I didn't feel the details added much to the narrative). But overall I found the game very easy to play through, and worth the time spent on it. I even restarted the game o I could see the beginning framing section again, now with added context. (I couldn't figure out how to play the Winter's Fair DLC, though it may no longer be available)
I really liked this game, definitely recommend this to anyone who likes the pixel-art style adventure games. It has plenty of charm, gorgeous art style and beatiful music. The writing is very fun and touching, the characters are highly likeable. It captures everything I like about indie games, I wish more high-budget mainstream releases could have a quarter of its heart. Looking forward to more games from this developer in the future!
This was an amazing game and i would recommend it to anyone wishing for an amazing story that i think that so many can relate to (besides the magic powers of course)
I absolutely loved this game. Slight spoiler: The ending was left open so maybe it will continue in the future? but I do say I love the story I cried a total of 3 times and had to hold back tears on 4 other occasions, with only 4hrs of game time? That's how you know it is a good story game.
If ya closeted this is probably pretty cool
