NetHack is a brilliant game and this is one of the ways to play it. It's a Steam port that just works without any hassle, and has some nice minor added features. I actually like the music and sound effects. The glow- and curve effects not so much, but you can switch those off. For me it's worth the 5 euros. What's annoying though is my character set is always reset so I have to set it manually to my preferred one every time I boot the game.
It gets a lot of hate for many different reasons, but I think it's a great port of NetHack to Steam. Yes, there are free alternatives, but I like this one and I wish to see more features come out of this game one day, like workshop support of tilesets and roles, ect.
NOTE for people who haven't played NetHack before: The latest stable binaries of NetHack are available for free at the Nethack website, github repo, or via the package manager for your appropriate distro, or can be played online over services like NAO or hardfought. This is probably the best way to experience NetHack as a beginner. I only recommend this product to people already familiar with NetHack and who are specifically seeking the Steam features exclusive to this release. As for the review for this product, it's NetHack 3.6.2 bundled with a CRT filter, soundtrack, and achievements, so expect all the bugs and quirks of that particular flavor of NetHack. Game is compiled with only SDL as a valid windowtype so perm_invent (inventory on the side of the screen) unfortunately doesn't work here for all of us windowtype:curses superfans. Foocubus seduction flag also seems to have been turned off, probably as a measure to avoid any potential NSFW labeling and the associated drama by Steam and/or payment processors. Uses DEC graphics by default but you can change the symset to IBM graphics in the nethackrc. Development on this port has by all appearances ceased at this point and there's apparently no plan on chasing the latest development cycle of NetHack proper. NetHack is a fantastic game I've been playing for the last 15 years and I highly recommend it. As for this port? It is most likely not worth paying for unless you specifically want to display achievements and/or your playtime on your profile as I did, and are willing to put up with some of the aforementioned peculiarities of this build. Never goes on sale so I imagine the dev has dipped, though the website for the game is still up, and the sourcecode for this port of the game is on there. It does what I wanted it for, so my experience with it has been positive. There is significant room for improvement, and I believe it fails at its mission of being an accessible port of the game due to the reasons outlined above, so I cannot recommend it in good faith to beginners. Avoid unless you are absolutely sure what you are doing.
Cool RPG.
Read a scroll and was teleported to a room with a single Dwarf who promptly stabbed me to death as I was paralyzed. 10/10 You can get the game free though, it's open-source on Github.
Great adaption for Steam. The negative reviews are upset that this is open source software and doesn't add anything new. It doesn't need to, it's great that it is in steam with cloud save at all in my opinion. Thanks for adding this gem to Steam.
If you like fantasy rpgs, you don't care about modern graphics, and you want to spend a few money to receive a challenge that can keep you occupied for a very long time - get Nethack. It is a very challenging game with very high replay value.
Admittedly I don't even know if the devs condone this thing on steam, just buy it if you want achievements and extra goodies. Still a better purchase then Vulture. The game itself is free, as in both beer and freedom.
its just nethack but sexier.
