What the hell why does nobody know about this game, it's SO GOOD! The art is beautiful and it manages to be difficult without punishing you too hard for making mistakes. The music is absolutely top notch too! Unlike some other runner games that I've played, you also have to actually choose when to hold down the accelerate key or let go on the gas. There are some obstacles that're incredibly difficult to do while accelerating. So you don't just hold forward and look at the pretty lights either - every single key matters here.
The soundtrack and the visuals in this game are amazing, and the game is pretty fun to play too
If you want fast, look no further
Nerve is a classic hidden gem. It's a tragedy that a game this polished somehow lingers in obscurity on Steam. And I don't entirely understand why. (I suspect that the game wasn't sufficiently polished on launch and hence got some suboptimal metacritic scores, but since those launch reviews the game has gotten half a dozen patches.) Anyway, this is a fantastic game in the same overarching genre as Thumper, Bit.Trip Runner, or Super Hexagon. Instead of a rhythm theme, here you can adjust your speed, and the game challenges you to complete zones at a breakneck pace. Judged as an ultra-stylish and eminently enjoyable runner & obstacle-dodger, I found NERVE pretty remarkable. I liked the game's aesthetics, and one can tell how it looks from the trailer. Something that may not be entirely apparent, though, is that this game has handcrafted worlds and zones. So you can master each zone both during the campaign and for speedrunning. And the level design is creative, varied, and just orders of magnitude better than the needless procedural generation many indie games suffer from. Finally, there's just a lot of game here: 10 worlds à 10 zones each, including a boss at the end of each world. I also really liked the design of the controls and game mechanics, and how they impact the game's difficulty. First of all, the variable speed mechanic is really clever: the game scores you only on your speed in each zone, whereas deaths are irrelevant (and you respawn with absolutely zero delay). So for each zone or obstacle, you can always choose between going faster to get a higher score, or going slower in exchange for less risk. To do that, there's a boost button (1.5x speed), a brake button (go slower), and later on a focus button (rotate twice as fast but go half as fast; plus the game clock slows down significantly). Secondly, while the game is presented as difficult, and getting the S-rating in levels certainly is, I think overall this design might allow for a pretty accessible experience: the ability to brake and focus as much or as little as you want essentially gives the game a fantastic dynamical difficulty. Other than that, there's a miscellany of smart design decisions. For instance, each world ends in a boss fight with multiple phases, but crucially there's a checkpoint after each phase. Or: My hands hurt after holding the boost button for hours, so I worried this was one of those games that induce RSI (repetitive strain injury) - but no, there's a setting which allows you to toggle abilities like boost or brake instead. (As a side note, tough, I played the game on a controller and can't really imagine playing it without one.) That's not to say the game is perfect. Occasionally, the collider of a few obstacles felt very slightly too big, i.e. I had a few cases where I figured I could squeak by obstacles, then repeatedly collided with them. The boss fights for worlds 7-9 were way too long for my taste (regular zones take <30 seconds to complete if you don't die; these had ~3 phases à >1 min each). And there's an experimental setting to increase the boost multiplier (speed gain from boosting) from 1.5x to 2x, but this doesn't disable achievements and can be used on the leaderboards, so the optimal choice for competitive play would be to always leave it on, which is rather yikes for something labelled as "experimental". But you can just ignore that setting while playing through the campaign, like I did. Anyway, I'm overall just so very impressed by this game O_o. It's a masterclass in its genre. Highly recommended.
Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the "lowest historical price" on steam at time of purchase. Quick score: 4/5 Quick Note: The game is solid. Aesthetically very similar to Thumper (a game I didn't really care for) but otherwise is not at all similar in terms of gameplay. A much closer game to this would be "No Parachute", totally different aesthetic but very similar (though much more simple) gameplay. Definitely recommend if you are interested in and/or enjoyed this game. -------------------------------------------------------- Complaints: I initially refunded and quit the game at world 4. This world introduces a slowdown mechanic that I felt severely damaged the flow of the game. But after learning it functioned in a slightly different way than I thought I decided to give the game another chance and I'm glad I did because the game is pretty great otherwise. Later on the game introduces a mechanic that actually forces you to use the brake and it also starts adding sections that are insane enough that the slow down feature is necessary rather than just feeling like a cheat code. I do still personally feel like it should be tweaked slightly. Right now it slows the game down to about 5-10% regular speed and gives you unlimited use. I would personally change the slow down to about 25% instead and then probably just leave it at unlimited use because otherwise many sections of the game would need to be changed. Or just make this an adjustable slider in the menu.
Really really GOOD game Probably the best Epic Velocity Kinda game i have played by far! When Nerve 2? if you will make it please, do it so its music based this time haha (? i enjoyed a lot this game!
