I tried. There's no escape menu and no settings. Not even volume. But I was okay with it. It ran pretty well, the keyboard and mouse controls worked and the game itself was fun. Even the fact I had to exit via alt+f4 was tolerable. Then, pretty far into "level 1" I ran into a bug. Some blue boss golem jumped right on top of the character in a cutscene and it led to a "you are dead" screen. From there the game became unresponsive and I had to alt+f4 again. Afterwards? The boss simply refused to jump down. So I got soft locked. Perhaps, replaying the level from the beginning would fix it. But that would require wasting an hour. And who knows how many more game-breaking bugs are there after this boss. In short, the game is pretty fun, but game-breaking bugs just keep piling up until it becomes unplayable. I hope the devs will fix it.
I really enjoyed my time with Nephilim. This -student-made- game may be short, but it packs a punch with its fast-paced combat and mechanics. In this title, you play as a warrior who wields the powers of Light and Shadow to take on your enemies and puzzles. What stood out to me the most was how smoothly the difficulty ramps up. The game introduces new mechanics at a steady pace, keeping things fresh without feeling overwhelming. Switching between Light and Dark isn’t just for show. Using the mechanic is key to both combat and puzzle-solving, making every fight and challenge feel dynamic. The boss battles feel rewarding, they're intense and really push you to use the abilities you get through the game. Sure, there are a few small bugs here and there, but nothing that will hinder progress or break the game. Considering it’s a student project, it’s really well put together. On top of that, the art style is a refreshing change from what we usually see. It is unique in a way that gives the game its own identity. Even with its short length, Nephilim delivers a satisfying experience with nice gameplay, a solid progression system, and an atmospheric soundtrack that pulls you in (like literally, the soundtrack's really good). If you’re into action RPGs with unique mechanics and puzzles, this one is definitely worth checking out.

Good game for what it is: a school project. I’ll start with the positives and then discuss some of the issues. The music is seriously great. The atmosphere created (in large part due to music, but not limited to it) is interesting. The level design is good, with a few simple puzzles, though I wish they were a bit more challenging. More time could have been spent creating additional puzzles using the already nice game mechanics in place. Abilities are quite nice and kept simple, and the progression is decent as well. Given that this game is free, the only reasonable reason not to try it is the presence of several glitches. Unfortunately, one of these glitches forces me to restart the game every time I die against the final boss. This doesn't nurture the resilience one would hope for their players in that kind of game. All things considered, it's an imperfect yet well-done job. Worthy of your time. Try it out!
*Nephilim* is a student-made isometric combat and exploration game that takes you into a world where light and darkness collide. You play as Strider Lazarus, a fighter who has been reborn to wield both Light and Shadow in a land on the brink of collapse. The game presents a combination of combat, puzzles, and exploration as you journey through its fantasy world, battling angels, demons, and other foes. The core gameplay revolves around switching between the Light and Dark worlds, each offering distinct powers and abilities that are crucial for overcoming obstacles, solving puzzles, and defeating enemies. This mechanic adds a layer of strategy, as you’ll need to wisely decide when to tap into each world’s potential to maximize your combat effectiveness and progress through the game. Combat in *Nephilim* feels fast-paced and rewarding. Strider Lazarus has a range of attacks, from basic fast strikes to more powerful charged moves. As you progress, you unlock special combos and ultimate abilities tied to both Light and Dark, which makes for a dynamic and engaging combat system. The inclusion of a Holy Sword Summon and the need to manage health potions adds further depth, keeping the action thrilling and tense. The upgrade system is another key feature, where you gather Upgrade Gems and invest them at Bonfires to enhance Strider Lazarus’ stats and unlock new abilities. This progression system keeps the player engaged as they strive to become a more powerful warrior. While the game is certainly ambitious, it does show its roots as a student project. The graphics, though functional, are fairly simple compared to bigger-budget games, but they effectively capture the tone of the fantasy world. The soundtrack, composed by Nerveight, is a standout feature, complementing the game’s atmosphere with original music that adds emotional weight to your journey. Overall, *Nephilim* may not have the polish of larger titles, but it succeeds in delivering a fun and challenging experience, particularly for players who enjoy fast-paced combat and exploration with an element of strategic depth. It’s an impressive project from a student team, and while there are rough edges, the creativity and effort put into the game are clear. If you're a fan of combat-focused games with a unique twist on light and dark mechanics, *Nephilim* offers an exciting (and budget-friendly) adventure.
Like it already!
Wow great level design! If I were a dev I would hire that Thomas guy in a heartbeat.
This game has a neat art style, they did the liberty of voice acting, and actually composed music. They tried to capture the grandiose of a Soul's game and it does okay. I wanted to complete this game. It runs terrible. I can run Elden Ring just fine. I shouldn't be running out of memory allocation by the second level. For a hack and slash, it's clunky. You don't want that in a soul's-like nor a hack and slash; you want it to be concise and visually clear. My recommendation? More time should have been spent in gameplay mechanics and optimization, especially for what this: a game jam game. It kinda feels like a Soul's + Furi Fanfic where Game Dev students used as many Unreal particle and lighting effects as they could. I wouldn't complain if the game felt good or ran. 3/10
