….what did you expect? The Path of Blades is a free to play Steam game whose marketing and title screen are plastered with AI art. like ...what did I even expect? I don't know, I guess I was hoping for something a little more. For one thing, it's a retro style first person fantasy action dungeon crawler, a very specific genre that I happen to be a big fan of. And two.. uhhm, there's no two. that's the reason why I downloaded it. I got it for free and came with no expectations, and I still feel disappointed. sorry. Hey there, epic fantasy fans! listen to this epic narrative; it will knock you off your feet. You see, there's this nameless heroine trapped in a dungeon, and she finds a sword and a shield, and then, uhm, she explores the dungeon, and tries to escape
.....that's it.
It's a simple premise, yes, but that's enough to get the game going. The exploration part kind of drags a bit, not only due to the intentional graphic limitations (which I'll get to later), but also the fact that there's really not much to explore. There are no secrets, no items to collect, and nine out of ten rooms are completely empty anyway. That leaves us with the combat, which is also rather underwhelming. It is cool how you can wield two weapons at the same time, and there is actually a decent amount of weapons to find
(including knives and axes)
, but the combat itself is just button mashing. Just spam the mouse buttons non-stop and you'll win every battle super easily, barely any inconvenience at all. But WAIT!! Who are you fighting??...just some guys. There's this one dude who looks like a 3D render of the limbless knight from Monty Python, there's the skeleton enemy from Twilight Princess, and there's a guy who looks like if someone tried to model Cloud from FF VII from memory
.....that's it.
You literally just fight the same three dudes over and over again. Now, all of this might sound passable (if not very very repetitive), but I haven't even gotten to the best part yet! the bugzzzz!! like, one playthrough, it wouldn't even let me take the sword at all, and I just had to fight everyone with bare fists. Another time, I was completely invincible for whatever reason; standing there and taking every hit like a chump, and my health bar wouldn't even budge.
(I even stepped directly into a fire trap -something that's supposed to kill you instantly- which did absolutely nothing)
. And yet another time, it was like I was made out of glass, taking only one hit and crumbling into pieces. All Cloud had to do was just sneeze on me, and I died in an instant. It's a weird mix; the gameplay isn't compelling enough to keep you playing, but the bugs (as funny as they might be at first) aren't entertaining enough to keep you interested either. It all just feels very... blahh. On the production values side of things, The Path of Blades can be accurately described in just one sentence:
“.....well, that was a choice”
. Take a look at the visuals for a bit. ...you might need to squint. For whatever reason, to make it “retro” or whatever, the developer put a heavy filter over everything, making the whole thing feel like a launch title for the SEGA Game Gear . Everything just looks like a giant blob of incomprehensible pixelated vomit; making 3D exploration nigh impossible. Seriously, I spent nearly twenty minutes looking for this certain door, which was completely camouflaged in a mess of black and gray blocks. If you do get close enough to tell what's what, then you're just going to realize that the game reuses the same five or six props over and over again. You're going to see the same broken chest
(which you can't open or really do anything with)
like a hundred times, and the only thing placed in otherwise dozens of empty rooms is a single torch. Honestly, and I mean no disrespect to the developer, but I wouldn't be surprised if they got a pre-made fantasy asset pack on Unreal Engine and threw that around before turning everything down to Atari game levels. And while the game is labeled as a first person adventure, you can play it in third person as well; which.. which leads to something worth mentioning. The player character model is a woman
(GASP!!! this game is W O K E !!)
who -to put it mildly- doesn't really look like she's ready for combat. She's wearing this very suggestive “armor” that reveals a lot of skin, and a paper thin mini-skirt that blows upward and reveals her panties; literally. every. single. time. she. takes. a. step. like, I know you're trying to get the gamers drooling and crap, but what's going to happen if she cuts herself? And the fact that everything else was given the bare minimum in terms of detail, but this poor woman was given pixelated boob physics and a pair of fully rendered.... uhm.. cheeks, makes me wonder if the guy took the model from some sort of sus naughty game or something. Unreal Engine wouldn't make that, right?? they've got some sort of standards, right?? With all that said, and I don't want to sound perverse in any way, the game is much easier to play in third person; as not only can you see where the enemies are at all times, but it ALSO shows you the enemy's health bar and stamina; which gives you a
(tiny)
goal to work towards during the spam fights. As for how the game sounds.... there's barely any of that. Aside from some background stock music, not one thing in the game makes any sort of noise at all. No slices or cuts, no grunts or screams, not even some sort of sad violin jingle for the game over screen. It's just pure silence. And look, maybe I'm being kinda harsh, seeing how this game was made by like one person; but you know what other fantasy game had very few people and no budget?
Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, an underrated DS classic, and STILL my favorite retro first person fantasy action dungeon crawler.
Also, about that AI art thing... uhm, do you want me to make you a new title screen or something? I'm definitely not a professional or anything, but I've made a number of custom game cases for Steam titles, sporting my own art and such; so if that offer interests you, I could try giving it a go. I can't promise anything, and I don't want to set any deadlines, but that still sounds like a cool job! The Path of Blades is kind of a hot mess. It claims to be a “brutal, retro inspired dungeon game with modernized combat”
(that's literally what the game description says)
, when all of those elements are technically there, but in the loosest sense of the word. The fighting is pointlessly easy, the visuals are laughably unreadable, and it's an unpredictable buggy mess. First attempt at making a game? GGs.

That's not a good idea, sadly, you can't cross Die by the Sword and Dark Souls : split-second reaction asks for clear visibility while retro hack-and-slash asks for fun and gore. I suggest you go one way or another.
bad game
Not bad, not great... i see potential (assuming this is only a prototype/demo/proof of concept). A few things I noticed that could do well here: * The levels are to open i feel like this game could use a more confined/claustrophobic feel * The retro filter needs a option to turn it down - its hard to make out what is what * I suggest going for only first-person or a very tight third-person view the current third-person view you can get the camera to break the level boundary. I started in third-person and when i switched to first-person the game IMHO was MUCH nicer (and that is coming from some one that is NOT a first-person fan) Don't let the reviews get you down - keep on trucking.
Modernize edilmiş dövüş, Souls benzeri yoğunluk ve retro esintili görsellerle acımasız, arcade tarzı bir zindan tarayıcısı. Klasik Zindan Tarayıcısı Yeniden Tasarlandı Arcade Souls Benzeri Oynanış sunuyor.
I love retro games, but this one is visually irritating. The screen is cluttered and it's hard to make out what's going on most of the time. It really needs a cleaner, more readable display to be enjoyable.
Me when i somehow make skyrim melee combat worse:
Игра 'The Path of Blades' предлагает захватывающий, хотя и несколько сложный, опыт в жанре Souls-like.
