I've been waiting for a Sprint like racer to arrive, and finally it comes in the familiar form of Atari's classic Sprint series.
I played the original series in the arcades and on Commodore 64 and there are a few differences from what I remember. The cars are a lot slower than the arcade version but personally I quite like that as I feel I have more control over these cars, rather than frantically trying to avoid collisions. The control you have makes for better racing in my opinion with a feeling that your skill plays more of a part and races are closer. The control also helps pave way for some new features like obstacle courses which would be impossible to play in older versions of this game. I really enjoyed the obstacle courses with debris on the track that you need to avoid, jumps, speed traps and speed boosters all complicating things. The placement of some of these obstacles are deliberately placed to cause maximum havoc, and sometimes you will need to plan your routes and slow down when needed, meaning you will try and try again, and it was very addictive trying to beat the gold, silver, and bronze times. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3276609051 There are no golden spanners in Neosprint and therefore no upgrades to your car, but instead you instantly get a choice of all nine cars which have differences in top speed, acceleration, and handling. This gives the option of picking the car best suited to your driving style, and often I found myself changing cars due to the track composition. Of course, you can customize each car with extras you earn from winning cups. The one noticeable difference I immediately noticed was that there are no short cuts on track, so no gates opening and closing where you can gain serious time or fail as the gate shuts in front of you. I used to love that aspect of the game so I was disappointed with that omission. To be fair though, the tracks are more elaborate than the original series ever was so it might be hard to incorporate the gates, but I'm sure they could have fitted them in somewhere. The campaign is quite long with eight different rivals waiting at the end of each biome and there are numerous tracks to compete on before you reach the rival. I didn't have much difficulty beating the rivals to be honest, but I still enjoyed the racing and there are some really nice tracks to compete on. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3276609267 The Time Trial mode is also a lot of fun, where again you are competing against gold, silver, and bronze times, but you are racing against a ghost of one of these times depending on how well you do on your first lap. Some of these times are very difficult to beat but the addition of the ghost makes it very exciting. There are also leader boards to compete on for extra incentives. Racing in Time Trial, Campaign, and Obstacle Courses earns you cups which unlock liveries for your car and pieces to use when building your own track. Sometimes, these track builders can be a little fiddly or difficult to use, but I found this track builder a breeze to make some really nice tracks, which you can share with the community. This mode is probably best left until you have played all of the other modes so that you have more pieces to use. You can even use community built tracks in Grand Prix mode where you can set up your own campaigns and race against AI or human opponents. The only thing this game is missing is the option to race online with other players which would make it perfect.
🍳Conclusion🍳

NeoSprint is the top down arcade racer I have been waiting for and I had a lot of fun playing it in every mode. There is a lot of content here, depending on how determined you are to beat gold times and earn achievements, but it is so addictive that you probably will be trying and trying as they are quite challenging. This Sprint game feels like evolution to me rather than a homage to the originals, apart from the gateways which I do miss, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. If there was an online racing option it would be perfect. Since the NES version of Super Sprint that make me love top down view racing games this new one brings me a lovely nostalgia. For a Millenium born in 80's it's a great surprise that this genre still keep amusing to enjoy!
Works great in steamdeck out of the box. Entertaining for shutting your brain off for a while.
First, to those who are trying to compare this to "Super Sprint", Atari also did a prior game in the 1970s called "Sprint 8" which this game seems to be based more on so to only compare it to Super Sprint is somewhat unfair. That aside, this is a decent revival of the franchise so far, with simple yet challenging gameplay and the track builder will provide a lot of replay value. There are a number of different vehicles to choose from, each with different attributes. The biggest downside is to take full advantage you'll have to grind through the other single player modes. Mulyiplayer is limited to local and remote play so hopefully you can get a lot of friends with this game to take advantage. I'm giving it a slight thumbs up right now as I like what I see so far and am excited to experiment more with the track builder, which has Workshop functionality. It could eventually benefit from online multiplayer being added. Although it's on sale right now (release discount), perhaps wait for a better sale when it goes down to around $15 then pick it up.
Pure Nostalgia! I have very fond memories of playing Super Sprint in many arcades as a kid, so when I saw this was coming out I immediately Wishlisted.. Now if I could just get my Logitech G920 to freely spin endlessly, the experience would be complete!
Too expensive for what it is
Has some nostalgia with the car physics that are strongly reminiscent of the original game from the 1980's but, no car upgrades? No nitros?! It's like they forgot what made the original fun. Track builder and community tracks thing is a nice add, but the track builder itself isn't great. Overall, it's more like an old free flash game, or something somebody would knock up in a 24hr game jam than like a whole actual game. Needs more time in the oven or like a $3 price tag.
Very good little game without pretension, which inevitably reminds me of Super Sprint from the Atari ST era. There are still some small adjustments to be made, such as the car physics, which could be improved (jumps, crashes, etc.), but overall, we're talking about a game that provides immediate and straightforward enjoyment. I approve!
I absolutely loved Super Sprint back in the days on the arcade. i think that's where my love for top-down racers first started tbh. I was a bit hesitant to pick this up due to there being no online mp however, one of the comms team is very active in the steam forums and is taking on this feedback so you never know it could be added at a later date, if we are lucky. This is a great top down racer which is a lot of fun to play and if you are able to play offline locally then you will have some great races. The campaign is OK but too easy, however there are lots of other modeslike time trials and obstacle courses which are more difficult to get the gold medals on. Being able to create your own tracks and share them with its own in built sort of cloud space is fantastic, and basically you can create whatever you imagination can drum up. This is a great game and I'm glad they brought this franchise back, just please add online m.p and a ranking system of some sort to incentivise ppl to play online. Crossplay would be a bonus.
What a passionless take on the old arcade title. The graphics are boring, the music is a bunch of cheap loops, the presentation lackluster, the Ai driver can't handle complex tracks... This is embarrassing! Worst is the fact the gameplay was even downgraded from its predecessors: No damage model, no Nitros, no upgrading, no bonus on the tracks... Just avoid this heartless cashgrab on a once great arcade license. The Devs should change jobs, because there is no love in this project.
