I know its early access but seriously no controller support in the menus???? This is supposed to be a couch game....
Driving physics are vastly different than GR1, cars don't feel as good to drive as in previous game, AI is unfair, spends less fuel than players, and there is no way to adjust the skill of AI drivers too. Stick to the original.
The cars of GeneRally 2 Mini The Mini is the slowest car. It has front wheel drive and neutral handling. With it's short wheelbase and tight turning radius, it's best for small tracks. It also has a fairly high top speed. It just takes it a while to top out. This can be fun on bigger tracks, when you start to encourage the little car to "Go! Go! Go!" :-) General As in GR1, the General is a good all purpose car. It turns tight enuf for small tracks. Is fast enuf for big tracks. And has good grip on all surfaces. It's steering is a bit too quick for it to be the best beginner's car. Rally The Rally is a very well balanced car. It has neutral handling and a well balanced power to weight ratio. It is good on any size track and has good grip on all surfaces. With 4 wheel drive, it's good for Off Road tracks and Dirt Ovals & Road Courses. My choice for the best beginner's car. Drift The Drift is ... unique. It was tuff to simulate the big counter steer action of a real drift car with a car that doesn't actually "steer" in the conventional manner. What it does is 'take a set' and hold it until you steer to straighten it out. It takes a fair bit of practice but, once you master it, it does do some nice power slides. Stocker The Stocker is heavy and powerful. It turns quickly enuf for small tracks. It has the highest top speed of all the cars, tho it's mass slows it's acceleration a bit. It's handling starts off neutral. But as the tires wear down it starts to oversteer. This allows you to swing the tail around with the throttle for some nice power slides. It has good grip on all surfaces making it good for dirt ovals and other off road stuff. GT The GT accelerates well and has a good top speed. It has some down force to help with grip and keep it on the ground over bumps and small jumps. It's handling starts off with a bit of understeer. It shifts to oversteer as the tires wear down. I find this to be a very fun effect. The GT is on racing slicks so does not have much grip offroad. Formula The Formula is the fastest car with excellent grip and precise steering. It has good downforce, the best acceleration and the second highest speed. The Formula may feel like it understeers and is slow in tight turns but, I think that's just a illusion due to it's high top speed. I did some skid pad tests and the Formula is the fastest around a hairpin radius circle. The Formula also shifts to oversteer as the tires wear down but it happens later and is not as strong. Until the tire get real low. Then it can be quite a handfull ;-) --------------- Lightning The Lightning is an electric, 4 wheel drive, off road truck. It is quite powerful with a good top speed. It's large tires and long suspension travel is great for extreme offroad tracks. It has a lot of body roll so you need to be careful to not get it rocking too much. Truck The Truck is ... Massive. It accelerates and brakes like a locomotive. It has a surprisingly good top speed but, once you get it going it takes some room to slow it back down. Most of it's mass is in the front so it does turn fairly well once you get it slowed down enuf. It's mass allows it to run over objects that would throw other cars for a loop. Monster The Monster Truck is truely a Monster. It's massive tires and huge suspension travel make it a bouncy, rolley ride. But it can go over Anything. Not the fastest vehicle for extreme off road but tons of fun :-D Do you have a favorite car? Let me know in the comments below!
Pros: - better graphics - online play - up to 8 cars on the track - Car reset - easy import of classic GR1 tracks - Steam Workshop integration Cons: - Oh, boy... - Car handling is way worse than GR1 - AI seems even worse than GR1 - For some reasons, AI consumes fuel and tires at a different rate from players, making pit stops unusable... (facepalm) - UI is arguably worse than GR1, sidegrade at best (Still can't see who has the fastest lap at a glance) - For some reasons, less options than GR1 (no slider for fuel weight, no custom points for races, no random selection of tracks) - Pilot selection is egregiously terrible. What was the problem with creating persistent pilots, instead of forcing to redo them from scratch every time? - No custom cars - No more end of season fireworks. Where are my frigging fireworks? - Peeps no longer bleed when hit Results: - Overall, worse than GR1, a game made over 20 years ago - Price point infinitely worse than GR1 (GR1 is free) - At the time of writing, less than 50% of the players won at least ONE race. 33% played at least TEN. Races last 5 minutes at most. That's telling Still not refunding, because it's early access and 90% of complaints can be solved by adding a toggle to enable "classic (GR1)" car handling. But this game looks like the poster child of evolving backwards
It remindes me 100% of my young age me playing generallye 1 with a friend on one pc, not allowed to use more than 2 keys on the keyboard. Otherwise inputs were frozen. Now the support of controller is a really nice feature and allows more control over the car. I hope online multiplayer is coming soon!
Fun game that's easy to pick up, but can still be a challenge to master. Solid controller support, and the new online multiplayer seems to work well too.
Fun game. Online multiplayer really expands it, so I'm glad its been added now.
It's very much fun! A great sequel to first Generally.
As someone who has poured about 800-ish hours into original GeneRally, I can attest to the general observation of this game being a pretty well-done top-down arcade-racing successor of a game made by Räbinä-brothers over two decades ago. I could make a proper essay of my more concrete view about this game, but alas I'll stick to simply listing key points for sake of time :v
POSITIVES:
+ Visual design is nicely improved by 4-fold without sacrificing the tone of GR1's simplicity (ex. tyres being simple spheres and props being relatively low in polygon-count). + Very small file-size makes it fast to install and smooth to run on most machines. + Car variety has been improved both in mechanical(i.e. more variety of how each car controls to be learned) and visual terms (notably with 3 patterns on each type for more base-line customization). + Track-editor has gotten MASSIVE QoL-upgrades, making it more accessible to get into while retaining abilities like land/height-map editing on external programs. + Tracks are easy to share onto Workshop which has allowed community ranging from long-timers and newcomers alike to constantly bring new track-layouts to be raced on in various sizes. + Ability to download GR1-tracks into this game is pretty neat way to still experience lot of classic tracks from years gone by (even if the import isn't perfect, mainly due to original GR-tracks only having 6 starting spots for cars thou this can be remedied with Track Editor or by only using 6 cars).
NEGATIVES:
- (As of writing this review) Unlike in GR1, there's no option to create driver presets for Player- or AI-driven drivers (with custom control-binds and customizable AI-skill levels respectively): for now, one must create an entire grid of drivers from scratch - (ditto) There's only 21 colors available for driver customization, which compared to GR1's system of using three RGB-sliders with values ranging from 0-255 does feel notably lacking. - (ditto) There's also no option to adjust points awarded in a race, leaving just the default scores and fastest lap bonus as only option. - Game's 15€'s price-tag does feel a little bit steep in comparison to the original GeneRally's free-ware status: like it isn't anywhere near as ridiculous as most modern games and I do sense good reasons for needing income (i.e. running servers, royalties, etc.), but alas I do feel this game's pricing to be more fitting if it was at 10€'s...
VERDICT:
Overall, I can recommend this game for anyone who wants to seek a simpler arcade-y racer with tools for expressing one's ideas: shouldn't be too challenging to get into if one gives the original GeneRally a try as well (it is free-ware game after all) to get a general feel how GR2 plays, thou when it comes to the price itself that may come up to whenever one feels the price being just right or if it'll be better to wait for a sale... up to everyone's preferences at end of the day. 9/10; solid successor with great community, simple yet easy-to-grasp driving mechanisms, nifty track editor for forming more tracks to play on and developers who know which direction they've build the game .D.
absolutely amazing top down racing games, scratching that niche itch feeling of you wanting to play classic NES racing game but in a modern feel and taste to it
