A bit of an old school hack n'slash adventure, Necroslayer takes a little while to get into, but once you've learned the ropes a bit, it's a really fun action game with a lot of potential. Very much in the tradition of an Elder Scrolls game (or at least the early Elder Scrolls games), there's not a lot of hand-holding here. While there are some basic tutorial elements, you can skip those and run right off into the adventure, even ignoring the main quest and just running off in the opposite direction if you so desire, though at a low level this could be quite dangerous. The game is divided into a number of zones, with occasional side dungeons, some of which are associated with either the main quest or the occasional side-quest you can pick up, and there is a bit of an open-world feeling here, many of these zones are quite large, with bands of enemies to slash or blast your way through, depending on your character build. And there's quite a few character builds to choose from, three to begin with, and then more as you gradually unlock more characters during your play-through. There's the traditional fighter types with sword and shield, mage-type characters with magical spells, rogues with daggers, monks with fists, priests with maces, and some more unique and challenging characters besides, each with pros and cons. Add a ton of different weapons that you can gain by killing necromancers, and you've got the making for a game with a ton of replayability. From crossbows to pole-arms, great swords to throwing axes, and a variety of ghost weapons, all of which are dropped randomly and can be upgraded over time, each play-through is going to be a bit different from the last. And most likely, you will be playing multiple times, for with perma-death, every time you die, you're going to need to start over from scratch. But at least you can keep your souls and your soul upgrades through every play-through! For $10, it's a pretty good deal, and the replayability means you'll get hours of play-time for that price. Pros: + Great Soundtrack + Decent Graphics (has a bit of that old school charm) + Fun Combat and Action + Lots of Replayability with different character types and play-styles. + Decent Sound Design (maybe not the best per say, but again, it has that old school charm) + Lots of Verticality (including the pole-arm, the most verticality-ist weapon!) + Good challenge, particularly on the Hard and Very Hard difficulty settings. You'll feel like you've earned your victories! Cons: (Note: Game is in Early Access, so these are obviously subject to change) - No World or Mini-Map (some of the game's areas are quite large, it would be handy to have a map to keep track of locations) - No Fast Travel - This isn't necessarily a con per say, but at one point during the main quest, you're asked to travel north, and then back south. The game has limited respawning enemies, but not on this particular route, so you're left sprinting for about three minutes to get from the north back down to the south with no real gameplay. A portal to take you back to Mara or actual new challenges to make your way back would vastly improve the experience of this particular part of the game. - Some Empty Environments - Keeping in mind that this game is in Early Access, and in the short time I've been playing it, there have been several major changes and new areas added, some of the environments (as of this review), particularly along the road north, can feel overly large and empty. The Sword Coast and the area immediately north in particular feel like they're big for the sake of being big, without enough actual enemies or gameplay-oriented elements to justify the scale. As a hack n' slash action game, Necroslayer is at it's best when there's something to fight. But those minor caveats aside, this is very much a Recommend, and I certainly intend to keep playing!
Only a few levels in but the game is a lot of fun. Has the charm of older RPG Hack'n'Slash games but with modern UI and visuals. Wandered out of town and immediately began battling the undead until I found a portal to a different realm. Combat is fast and fun with Lots to explore. Recommended
This game feels like an Elder Scrolls adventure in an old-school roguelite engine. The combat is responsive, the boss fights are difficult, and there's plenty to explore when wandering around. I saw a structure on a rocky cliffside off a shore and decided to just go climb it to see what was on top of it and got an achievement for it. For $10, this game is easily recommended.
This game really captures the old school feel that we all loved and knew back in the late 90's & early 2000's. I am really enjoying my time spent in game. This game is one that will not hold your hand. That is a plus in my book. It gives you the ability to explore the world uninterrupted. The music score is beautiful in this game, along with the environmental sounds. I don't have any "Con's" at this moment, but only "Pro's", so if I run into any "Con's" further down the line, I will add them into my review.
Edited: Changed from not recommended to recommended. Removed issues that have been resolved. The game gives off the old-school feel and visuals of hack and slash games. The game has improved the visuals and lighting since my first review, and it seems to be getting better over time. The sound design/balance is not great. Very overpowering music, very cookie-cutter effects. The sound effects for picking up souls and certain enemies getting hit are very loud compared to the rest. The initial game play was rough, but a couple of updates to the enemies and crosshair have smoothed it out a bit. Enemies still have iffy synced animation, but the combat pacing is better. It also has bugs, one of which allow enemies to walk onto high areas that may take a player several jumps to get to (if possible), and stop you from progressing kill quests, or at least make the area harder. This happened the first time I tried to kill the necromancer at the church in the first area. He walked backwards into a rock and appeared on top of it. Another bug I have found is getting stuck on the geometry of pots and skeleton parts. It can get you stuck during combat. Overall it has improved, and I will continue to revisit it.
If you're into more trad roguelikes, and have a hankering for some unguided exploration, this game is for you. Combat is slightly jank, but there is more depth to the world than I expected.
I only wish all indie developers offered us gamers this much heart, this much effort and this much passion for such a small asking price! This game is a labor of love and it certainly shows when you play it. It's got many different classes to play and unlock. A pretty big map to explore and tons of dungeons, caves, and forest paths to explore and conquer! I absolutely love this little gem of a game, and while it's certainly not the next Skyrim, what it is.. is a helluva fun little RPG action open world gem in the massive rough that is Steam indie games these days. https://youtu.be/IXCTE_3q3Qk HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ..An absolute STEAL for less than an iced coffee will cost you at most places. Fans of RPG games with nice 3D graphics should jump all over this one and then thank me (or thank the developer later! It's a blast!
Nice oldschool roguelite fantasy rpg. Took me 4 hours to beat. Suffers from fps drops in some areas.
Haven't played much, but a fun romp with good combat. Also, big fan of the lighting - only knew a skele was behind me from his shadow... damn lights saved my life.
Diamond in the rough for anyone looking for a medieval fantasy game.
So, I played this game. Looking for a action fantasy style game. It wasn't disappointing. It is in many ways reminiscent of those classic D&D games from the 90s. Is this game going to get best graphics of 2024 by IGN? No, but sometimes graphics don't make a game, its substance. I think this game definitely has substance. The small details, like the font being medieval designs. The names of the characters the fact if you die 5 times, it automatically puts you in super easy, and you got to beat the game to get into hard mode. Honestly, this game made me have so much nostalgia for the games I played as a kid. Having tons of new game plus content, all sorts of new classes you can play as. Reminiscent of Morrowind in upon a new game you can replay and just destroy everybody. It definitely has some of the best replay value I've seen in years. Honestly, as anyone can see I've only had this game for 6 hours, I had to quit playing because I realized I had responsibilities. I thought, I'd leave a review before getting back to my studies. Now, I will say is this a AAA game? No, but it is definitely a diamond in the rough and well worth the asking price.
