(Follow my curator for more reviews like this) This is an enjoyable King's Field clone, a bit janky but that's to be expected from a game in this genre, especially one made by a solo dev and priced at a lowly 4€. You'll easily get your money's worth out of this one. The game starts you out on an island, where you're supposed to enter a village and delve into the dungeon underneath its church. There's not much story beyond "evil stuff is below, destroy it!" and there doesn't need to be. This is pure, raw dungeon crawling fun. Combat is a simple affair of hitting your enemies and either blocking their hits (which reflects damage and heals you) or walking back/circlestrafing to avoid their strikes. Whenever you get enough XP from killing enemies, you level up, which raises all of your stats. There are no different builds, your numbers simply get bigger the higher your level gets. Every character is expected to use combat and magic at the same time. What this game focuses on is exploration, and on that front it delivers. Checking out every corner of a dungeon level is rewarded with various loot. You can find new weapons, spells, and consumables that permanently increase your health/mana/stamina or give you experience on drinking. These perma-bonuses are higher than what you get from a levelup, so exploration is the primary way of improving your character. You can also find rings and amulets with various effects. The exploration has a bit of metroidvania in it, too, as many of the spells you find allow you to get to places you couldn't reach otherwise. There's a leapfrog spell that makes you jump higher, a speed spell that makes you run faster, a bomb spell that can break cracked walls. There are also two movement abilities you can find by defeating optional bosses: dashing and double jumping. There are plenty of secrets and optional areas to find in this game, and since many of these secret areas contain consumables that permanently improve your stats, finding them feels very rewarding. With every secret you find, your character gets stronger. This made me want to clear every dungeon level thoroughly. There are also some optional locked doors you can open with key items, and before the final boss there's a sealed cage containing the game's best weapon, which can only be opened with 4 keys found throughout the game. Environments and enemies are varied enough to keep the game fresh through all its levels, even though the combat itself is very simple. Some areas have little puzzles and twist, including one I found quite creepy (you'll know it when you get there). In some levels, the game also plays with its view distance, which is usually rather low, but is increased in a few well-lit areas. My only complaint is that the low view distance coupled with most areas having boxy architecture with samey textures makes it easy to lose your orientation in some places, giving you that feel of "Did I already go down that hallway? Which of these did I not explore yet?" It isn't too bad, though, and usually there are at least one or two visual details to help you orient yourself. At the point of writing this review, the game has one annoying bug that happens consistently. When you level up, a "Level Up" message appears in the center of your screen. If you take damage while that message is still there, it will remain and not go away until you quit and restart the game. That happened to me quite a few times, and I hope it will get fixed in a patch. Other than that, I had no issues and found this an enjoyable KF-style dungeon crawler with great exploration. It took me about six hours to complete, in which I found most secrets and killed all optional bosses, getting 100% achievements. It's a pretty short game, but still plenty of content for a 4€ game. Overall I can recommend this if you like exploration-focused dungeon crawls with plenty of secrets and optional areas.
Extremely recommended! This is the most King's Field game on steam, even more than Lunacid. If you like KF, this game is definitely one you'll want to grab!
To start off, a lot of this jank is excused for a solo dev, but these points can be improved in further games. Well done for what you've produced, which I would say is worth the price tag. The problems I have with this game are the following: The levels are TOO BIG and TOO EMPTY - Huge levels with many moments of disrespect towards the player's time. One example that sticks out to me is a huge area with nothing in it that you travel a minute or 30 seconds through just to open a chest and receive the Catacombs Key, and then you walk back. Why? The slow movement is partially remedied by when you acquire the Speed Amulet. Nevertheless, the levels must be condensed for the amount of content that exists within them. Besides the Library, the enemy placement is too sparse, keeping in mind how quickly they die. Consider adding friendly NPCs or more lore notes around. Finding secrets should be rewarded more. The accessories that affect combat have negative traits as well as positive ones, for some reason. Kind of strange to gimp the player in a single player game where the enemies are already easy to deal with. Maybe you could increase the difficulty of enemies by giving them more attacks? The weapon balance is pretty bad. There are tons of cool weapons but you only need 2-3 of them. You get OP quickly even though the game tries to gimp you. A certain sickle + a certain ring will carry you through the early game until you pick up a certain sword, and a short time after you get the Broken Void Sword, which is all you need to win the game. I couldn't find a Magma Gem for the final Bloodstone Key so I didn't even get the cool demon sword at the end, but I didn't need it. The fog gets annoying after the first area. If you were going for grand, imposing levels, they look much better without the fog covering everything up. The ziggurat and the broken bridge area before the blood citadel looks great. Consider toning the fog down, or adding a view distance setting. That leads in to my next complaint. Barebones pause menu with no video settings. Please add this in your next game. As for the good things, I like the Mimic being a prop instead of a cliche chest. You should have made one for all the different breakable scenery to really mess with the player. The music is simple but it actually fits the tone of the game, unlike Lunacid's soundtrack. Well done I like the mysterious invincible guy that appears out of nowhere to kill you. I thought it was BS at first but it's kind of funny.
This game will live with me for quite some time. Not because it's the best game ever created, far from it! But because of it's honesty, it's beautiful simplicity and respect for the players who enjoy exploration and crawling through dark hallways with little to no clear objective. This game RADIATES King's Field and it stays true to that all the way through. The combat was nice and fluid, as well as the magic system. It starts off slow, but better equipment quickly makes fights and area traversal much more enjoyable. The parry mechanic didn't interest me at first, but as the enemies and bosses got stronger it became much more worthwhile to use and was very entertaining. The secret areas and items were all worth getting, and the "powerups" made backtracking a breeze. It may not be a beautiful or well polished game in terms of looks, but the spirit and passion I felt from it was more than enough to keep me playing and go for 100% completion. 10/10 game!
I am still playing this game but so far it is worth giving it a shot! While I love to see King's Field videos online I have not played any game. This is very close in terms of the style I have seen so far. However, I would have liked to see more weapons and secrets in this game. Backtracking or finding your way to some locations can be very annoying (poison level). BUT it feels very rewarding if a certain path is found or a mechanism changes the whole environment. Combat is not the biggest challange but the blocking system is a nice approach. Bosses however can be challanging. The levels are too big and long hallways or intersections make the mind wander off and this does not make it immersive. In total i would love to see HOLLOWDEEP 2! With: NPCs giving quests Maps Smaller rooms / different layout Combat improvements Enemy AI improvement More secrets Pros: Gaphics if you like the PS1 style. Atmosphere Level design in general Retro style Some secrets Rings Spells Cons: Combat Weapons Sometimes there are really cool enemies or sudden things you would not expect. Gives the game a nice twist. I am totally recommending this game since its price is more than reasonable! It is a fun and partially challanging game taking you back to old RPG classics ind FPS style. 8/10 in total. Solid work. Bugs: Sometimes switching to the inventory causes the inventory to pop up twice. Once the text " Level UP " did stick till I reached the third next Level Up.

I'll update it once, I beat it. I can recommend the game already though, has that King's Field charm filtered by eurojank solo indie dev quality. Also, Godot and one man made.
I think there are a couple of issues with this game -- there's a bit too much space in each environment and the combat can be a little simple, but I strongly recommend it! This is a pretty faithful King's Field like, and this game deserves to find its audience, it's a solid game and I'm excited to see future releases from the dev.
