Mythos - This is an MMO from 2011, remade to play in single player. There are 4 classes in the game, each class has 3 specializations, in every specialization 5-8 active skills and perks for them. Skills can be reset up to level 40 with NPC, the camera is switched using the icons in the upper right corner. The game is not fully translated from Korean, skills without translation: Spearknight (tank/warrior) - All !!! Bloodletter (rogue/warrior) - 8 Gadgeteer (gunner/?) - 1 Pyromancer (mage/summoner) - 0 I will gladly change the rating if the developer at least translates all the skills, although this is unlikely judging by the relation to the Hellgate: London...
This is a fun MMO with all the trimmings, minus the MMO. Yes, you have to overlook some oddities, like untranslated bits, and leftover group related content. I think it's well worth the asking price to play a game like this, offline. Plus, there seem to be some gameplay boosts to accommodate the lack of other players. Speaking of which, every time an online game that I was interested in shut down, my first thought was, 'Why doesn't somebody make this playable offline?' Well, HanbitSoft has two such games under their belts, now. I hope they continue this kind of content. It would be wonderful if more developers, did. And I'm certainly not going to be as hard on this company as others are, they've brought back two titles that I wouldn't have been able to play otherwise. You could do so much worse for under ten dollars.
The game was an MMORPG when it was first made like 11 some years ago and never really took off, but those of us that played for a bit (including myself) enjoyed what was there but things happened and other games like TL took its place among others. This was made by some ex-Blizzard employees, which is why the game looks and feels/plays like World of Warcraft along with UI, skills, items, etc. There are four classes you can play; Bloodletter, SpearKnight, Pyromancer, and the gadgeteer and they have three trees in the skills menu to choose from. The game has a lot of stuff unlocked from the shop and just to make the game a bit more playable due to being re-done as a single-player experience like HELLGATE: London, they both have major issues like the 0FPS bug in HG:L that basically makes the game almost unplayable but other than that it's still pretty solid to play here and there, as for Mythos it has a lot of mistranslated areas and it's doubtful they'll ever be gotten to and this was placed on the Steam store as a nostalgia trip too for those that want to replay.
I was part of the initial beta tests for this game back in 2011, and at that time, this was an excellent game. I was heartbroken when it went away. I would love to recommend this now, but I feel like I can't. As a single player game, you're really better off spending your money on something like Torchlight II, which has great graphics, fun quests and gear, tons of excellent community created content, etc. Mythos had its time, there might be some nostalgia here to be had if you remember the original. Otherwise, you should save your money.
Worse than the worst Korean F2P games...
Boy oh, boy... Mythos... this game brings back memories from 2008 when I played the game's beta. It was right before Torchlight 1 came out and Torchlight 1 was actually massively modelled on Mythos... but the game has been in development hell since then and it at one point passed through the hands of a Korean dev studio and this is what we're left with today... Cons: #1. No resolution options above 1080p #2. The skills have TERRIBLE balancing. I found that I kill enemies at least 300% faster by just running around and shooting the enemies with my normal left-click attack than using my abilities. Some abilities for the Marksman class for instance scale off of Wisdom, which is hilarious.... why would you select Wisdom on a ranged Marksman class? rofl #3. About 50% of the game is in Korean, and some parts of the tutorial are in Korean as well... so unless you understand Korean, then you're screwed #4. The game has an item-shop (because, Korea) #5. The graphics of the game have seen ZERO improvement since 2008 (which means they're exceptionally terrible) #6. The game has some seriously terrible spaghetti-coding. When I launched the game, it crashed my OBS and Steam, so I had to restart both. The game also has "Do not read text" signs all over the place, which must be some kind of coding error. #7. The controls don't respond very often, especially left-clicking. Sometimes I have to click 3 or more times on a thing to get the game to respond. #8. The game has terrible camera options. There is no 'perspective follow' camera option at all (which MANY ARPGs have) and your left-click rotates the camera BUT your left-click also issues movement commands.... so if you left-click whilst moving your mouse for even a millisecond, then it rotates your camera, which is super annoying. #9. The game has no voice acting whatsoever #10. No borderless fullscreen option #11. No FPS cap option and no V-sync option either I remember what this game looked like in 2008 and the fact that the game not only didn't seen any improvement since then, but in fact has been downgraded since 2008 is just hilarious. And the fact that they have the audacity to charge $10 for this dog water is shocking. If you're looking for a good ARPG from 2008-ish then just play Torchlight 1 or Titan Quest... avoid this trash at all costs. First of all, the game is good. I like it. On top of it, it is a win for game preservation, turning a dead MMO into a single-player offline experience. This re-release by HanbitSoft however - is not. It's an unfinished game with a lot of bugs, untranslated Korean text and other issues, and seeing how they butchered Hellgate: London before and simply ran away with the money, it's unlikely that the game will get any better. As a fan of Torchlight, I remember trying the original MMO version in the very early 2010 and it was fun if a bit rough around the edges. Sadly, this current version is pretty lacking: - Firstly, there is no multiplayer at all, I did not expect this to be a MMO, but not even co-op? - Secondly, it does not have resolution options above 1080 (unless you want to play in 4:3, then there is 1440). - Thirdly, and most egregiously, it still features a good amount of Korean text where English should be. I don't think we'll ever see any kind of multiplayer patched in, but I dearly hope the last two things get fixed with an update. Overall, hard to recommend unless you're looking for a nostalgia fix.
Loved this game when it still was just to try the network code for Hellgate and it was open to the public. It was even nicer, in my opinion, then Hellgate. Sad it was when Flagship had to fold down. They never were given the chance to make there products better. This version of Mythos is not as good as it has been but could be a nice play. To put it simple, there was, in the original, and also later on in the inbetween carnations of this IP use of good English. I am not gonna settle for half english and half a language where I have to guess what the outcome will be when I click a button. So refund will be asked after putting down this review. So I did.... but thought let's give it a try .... The game was pretty fun as before the korean was not a game breaker, sloppy but no real problem. WHAT IS THEN THE PROBLEM? One could ask. The game eats memory, most likely it makes virtual memory or a temp file on drive C: then C: gets filled up, the game crashes your drive has ) bytes left on space, you reset computer, the disk regains its space and you have lost your character and thereby all progress. THSI AIN'T FUN!!!
This game was not bad in its time in multiplayer, we are offered to play it again but in solo, why not. But the problem is that the game is in English and Korean so impossible to play correctly unless you are bilingual
