Mythic Mire is the latest game from resnijars, who is one of the most criminally underrated indie dev teams out there in my opinion. Their latest games include Mibibli's Quest, a surreal and quirky platformer as well as Stardust Demon, a super solid Cave Story-inspired metroidvania full of cute character designs and 3D CGI cutscenes. They've also developed the visual novel/match-3 mashup Sparkles & Gems as well as several other games that always try to bring something new to the table, something quirky and interesting. That's what I love about them and why I was super curious to try out Mythic Mire, their foray into the classic RPG genre. And it's mostly what I expected - a quirky RPG with surreal vibes and a tiny bit of creepiness added for good measure. Let's get into the pros and cons: WHAT I LIKED - The atmosphere is on-point: weird, surreal and a bit creepy. - No random encounters! You can see enemies while walking around and avoid them if you don't want to fight. - Combat starts out a bit slow and gets more interesting later on, especially with the Billiards ability. Faeya's moveset is very typical, but the Pixies tend to get more creative and each of them gets a more traditional role in the party. It's nothing too unique, but it serves the game well throughout its duration. - Queer aliens! - The most important aspect of resnijars' games to me is that they're full of life. You can feel the devs' passion in every single corner of Mythic Mire - that's why I love indie games, after all! The end result is a game that definitely feels like a resnijars game and that couldn't have been made by anybody else. WHAT I DIDN'T VIBE WITH AS MUCH - The dungeon crawling can get a bit repetitive, which means taking breaks is very much recommended. Some simple puzzles could have alleviated this, but it's not really a con as much as a feature of dungeon crawlers! - I would have loved just a bit more meat to the combat. Maybe an accessory slot for each character could have added some strategy and allowed for more personalised fighting styles? - Still on combat: there's a lot of it, and starting out a combat against six enemies with them each attacking you in turn is never enjoyable. I'm not a fan of that kind of artificial difficulty and would have liked an "initiative" system in order to start every fight on your own terms. Later on in the game, I wanted to avoid battles because they were a hassle, which is never a good sign in an RPG. - EDIT after finishing the game: the ending. Or endings, since you can replay the last stretch of the game to get a "better" ending - they were both absolutely terrible and definitely my least favourite part of the game. For 10 bucks, Mythic Mire is a solid entry into the RPG genre with a lot of quirks and personality that make it unique. I'll update this review when I'm completely done with the game, but for now, I absolutely recommend giving it a try and at least getting your third party member before forming a definitive opinion since you'll have experimented most of what it has to offer by then!

This is a very enjoyable jrpg dungeon crawler inspired game. The vibes on display are immaculate, if the trailer grabs you, you're absolutely in the intended audience for this game. The mixture of cute 16 bit furry artwork with fun 90s cgi interludes creates a style that is seemingly only explored by resnijars, and the plot captures the player's imagination enough that they feel the need to dungeon crawl to find out what exactly is going on, and to see the next setpiece. The game has several different difficulty settings in the menu that can be utilized to make this game as casual or hardcore as you want. The default difficulty is pretty easy, albeit with the requirement that you engage with various spells and items in order to survive, mashing attack is usually inefficient. Each party member has their own gimmicks and abilities to exploit such that nobody ever feels useless. The varied turn order and strengths/weaknesses of various enemy combinations requires you to continually change your strategy. If you set this game to hard I imagine it would be a tough one to beat. If you're looking for a fun dungeon crawler with a unique character I recommend picking this up and supporting resnijars.
Full disclaimer: I worked as a playtester for Mythic Mire. So I have an additional 2.5hrs on the game through there. Mythic Mire is a fun, retro-styled RPG with a slight horror vibe! The characters all have neat abilities, with my favourite being the billiards-style of damage that reminds me of the quirky battle moves in older Final Fantasy games (6 in particular). The character art and design is a nice mixture of cute and dark and the music is great!
Good game, as always nice OST and always happy to see these two devs working on new projects
Fun short surreal old-style jrpg, I loved the vibes and the use of the retro CGI combined with the pixel art, the music is also excellent. The dungeon isn't very interesting since it's pretty repetitive and without real puzzles or exploration, but the combat system is good and the bosses are very fun. If I said that I fully understood what the main plot was about and what happened in the ending(s) I'd lie, but it ended up being a sorta Lynchian experience that you can enjoy even if wondering WTF was that about.
I was a beta tester I have more time I swear Gay lil rpg I like made by devs I like. Well worth the asking price. Even if you're not familiar with Resnijars' games (you should be btw they're cool), it's just a simple but fun RPG that'll keep you pretty well entertained for its runtime. Visual aesthetics knocked out of the part as always, with beautifully stinky retro-esque CGI cutscenes both for story events and even for things like enemy attacks. Never gets old. I'm honestly kind of jealous and want to make CGI like this myself; it manages to near-perfectly capture that strangely slick and curvy look CG had back in the day, complimented further with its limited color depth and low framerate. I do wish more 3D movement was seen as most of the movement is just camera movement, but maybe next time. Some scenes DO have 2D animation overlayed over the 3D though, which I think looks fantastic. Resni's music's great as ever too; I've held deep appreciation since playing Stardust Demon for their ability to make hard rock music using only digital instruments. That's a difficult task for even seasoned musicians, and one that gives their music a unique flair where it lies in limbo between EDM and hard rock, too electric for pure hard rock but too non-synthetic-sounding to fall into the realm of electro music. It sounds REALLY good and I have a ton of respect for their ability to make their music so...themself. There isn't a whole lot like it. The gameplay's basic, but it's still fun. Do mind; it is a VERY simple RPG. With some fun minigame attacks too, which add a lot to the gameplay in my opinion; but don't go in expecting more complex RPG mechanics. There's no armor or equipment or anything; just you and your raw battle experience. For some this could be a bonus, but I can imagine people who would want a more micromanage-ey game being a little disappointed by this. That said, it makes up for this misstep in complexity with its abilities. The strategizing this game allows you to do is fantastic; a lot of it comes from a mechanic called "mireing". Basically, you can inflict or remove this ability that causes the entity afflicted with it to take more damage. However, it's not just a simple debuff! Different abilities may interact with your characters differently depending on their mired status; some attacks will end up dealing LESS damage, or no damage at all, while other attacks may deal WAY more damage, or may have an ability that's only triggered when the target entity is mired. Without spoiling too much, it's a very neat mechanic that my only gripe with is it's not used that much. Most enemies die pretty fast, so I find it more efficient to just attack them rather than mire them. It IS very useful on boss fights, but that's about it. I'd love to see a mechanic like this expanded upon in other RPGs, whether made by Resnijars or otherwise. TL;DR. Fun RPG. Low price. I think you'll like it. Play their other games too; they're really neat :)
I'm so-so on dungeon crawlers. I can dig a good crawl if there's rougelike shenanigans at play, the combat is fun, or the story is compelling. Given the reviews, I knew the first of those wasn't going to be it. I gave this a shot well past the refund period hoping it would pick up. I give up. I can't. The story is compelling, but then every step or discovery along the way seems to be in a different direction. I feel like I'm not going to get the satisfaction I'm looking for, even as far in as I am. Combat is the reason I'm giving up on this. The combat is miserable. Got a group of enemies? The main person has the hit all move. Use that. Now they're dead. That's it. There's Mire but honestly, it doesn't really matter. Combat is mostly a matter if Casting Fist until HP, the most important stat, is 0. Mire seemed like an interesting concept that isn't fully used. There's hardly any variety to enemy encounters, which is disappointing. I don't like the way the enemies show on screen. What's the point of putting them in a hallway like I can skip past them if they move faster than me? It reminds me of when games give a choice box but all the options are the same. I never like that. Bosses I just do ocean, enemy groups are the wave that hits everything. Everything else is just punch until it dies. Also shopping is miserable. You have to stand on a tile, get told "you wanna buy this", accept. Now you have one. Why not just use a menu and let me buy multiple? Or to just plain have a menu? I want to buy 10 potions and I can feel myself just nodding off. Save points don't heal you. When you want to heal everyone, you have to go to the inn, walk over to the room and then accept to save. Why not do the fade to black right as I'm at the counter? Like, so much of this just feels like the game doesn't care about my time. There's not enough of the story trickling out to compel me to stick with this considering the combat. I liked the aesthetics, for what it's worth.
I'm having a good time.
Mythic Mire was a very cool, weird, short and min boggling experience! The music is absolutely fantastic and the gameplay was both refreshing and just the right amount of difficult for a turn-based RPG. BIG recommend to Resnijars, their style just oozes through their games ^^
Pretty cool little rpg! Was blown away by how pretty it was, and the combat nails that sweet spot of kinda simple but also engaging. Fun cast of characters, definitely gonna keep an eye on this developer
