It is pretty basic and simplistic, aside from a weird item mechanic that is more confusing than interesting. It might be fine for people that just want to play something nostalgic, but for the average person, it will just feel like a boring, poorly made game. 2/10
Visit our website for more in-depth reviews and recommendations
It reminds me of really old retro pc games from the 90's. Back when Doom was king! Nostalgia thumbs up.
Mystical is the kind of retro game that instantly reveals its age, yet somehow remains fascinating because of it. Developed by Infogrames and brought back to modern platforms through Ziggurat, the game feels like a preserved piece of early PC gaming history rather than a title attempting to compete with contemporary releases. It throws players into a fantasy adventure built around magic, dangerous dimensions, and artifact recovery, all wrapped inside a side-scrolling action framework that reflects the design philosophy of the early 1990s. The story itself is uncomplicated, following a young apprentice magician tasked with recovering scattered magical objects after a disastrous mistake, but the simplicity of the setup works because the game focuses more on atmosphere and challenge than narrative depth. What stands out almost immediately is how unapologetically old-school the gameplay feels. Mystical does not guide the player gently into its mechanics or offer extensive explanations. Instead, it expects experimentation, patience, and repetition. Movement feels stiff compared to modern platformers, combat can be unforgiving, and certain hazards seem intentionally designed to punish hesitation. At first, these elements may appear frustrating, especially for players unfamiliar with classic DOS-era action games, but over time the experience develops a strange sense of rhythm. Progress often comes through memorization and persistence, creating a rewarding feeling whenever difficult sections are finally overcome. The game’s visual style carries a strong retro charm despite its technical limitations. Pixel art environments are simple but imaginative, filled with unusual fantasy landscapes and surreal enemy designs that help the adventure stand apart from more generic medieval fantasy settings. There is a dreamlike quality to the world design, where strange colors and abstract scenery create an atmosphere that feels mysterious and unpredictable. Modern players may not find the graphics impressive on a technical level, but there is undeniable creativity behind the presentation. The environments feel handcrafted in a way that captures the experimental energy of early computer gaming. Sound design also contributes heavily to the experience. The music and audio effects are unmistakably rooted in the DOS era, featuring simple but atmospheric melodies that complement the magical setting. Rather than relying on cinematic presentation, the soundtrack quietly reinforces the lonely and dangerous feeling of exploring unfamiliar worlds. For players who grew up with older PC titles, the audio alone may trigger a wave of nostalgia. Even newcomers can appreciate how effectively the soundscape supports the game’s strange fantasy tone. One of Mystical’s most interesting qualities is its refusal to compromise its original identity. Many classic games rereleased on Steam receive major quality-of-life updates or modern balancing adjustments, but Mystical largely preserves the same structure and challenge that players experienced decades ago. This authenticity is both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, it allows retro enthusiasts to experience the game in a form close to its original release. On the other hand, it also means the game retains outdated frustrations that modern audiences may struggle to tolerate. Limited combat variety, repetitive level progression, and punishing difficulty spikes occasionally make the experience feel more exhausting than rewarding. The game also suffers from the limitations of its era when it comes to pacing and mechanical depth. There are stretches where gameplay begins to feel repetitive, particularly because the combat system remains fairly basic throughout the adventure. Enemy encounters often rely more on timing and memorization than strategy, and some stages can drag due to the lack of variety in objectives. Players expecting the smoothness and refinement of modern retro-inspired indie games may find Mystical difficult to fully embrace. However, players interested in gaming history or vintage action-platformers may appreciate these rough edges as part of the game’s identity rather than flaws alone. Despite its shortcomings, Mystical succeeds in creating a memorable atmosphere that lingers long after the game is finished. There is something compelling about its harsh design, surreal fantasy setting, and commitment to old-school challenge. It may never achieve the timeless status of genre-defining classics, but it possesses enough personality to stand out among many forgotten titles from the same period. Ziggurat’s rerelease also deserves credit for helping preserve a game that could easily have disappeared entirely from public memory. In the end, Mystical is best viewed as a retro curiosity aimed primarily at players who appreciate classic DOS-era design philosophies. It is difficult, occasionally clunky, and undeniably dated, but it also carries an unusual charm that makes the adventure worth experiencing for fans of vintage gaming. Those willing to adapt to its demanding mechanics will discover a fantasy action game filled with atmosphere and nostalgic character, while players seeking modern polish may find the experience too rough around the edges. Mystical may not be a masterpiece, but it remains an intriguing and worthwhile relic from a unique era of PC gaming. Rating: 6/10

Mystical is a 1990 action-puzzle game that feels like a time capsule from an era when simplicity and creativity defined gaming. It’s not a game you’d pick up for groundbreaking mechanics or stunning visuals—it’s a straightforward retro experience that appeals mostly to those with nostalgia for early '90s games or an interest in gaming history. The gameplay revolves around exploring whimsical environments, defeating enemies, and solving simple puzzles. The controls are basic and may feel clunky compared to modern standards, but they do their job. You’ll spend your time navigating through levels that are linear and intuitive, though they might feel repetitive after a while. It’s easy to see the charm in its simplicity if you go into it with the right expectations. Visually, Mystical is dated, as expected for its 1990 release. The pixelated graphics and stiff animations are reminiscent of the limitations of the time, but they hold a certain charm for those who appreciate retro aesthetics. The bright color palette stands out, and while the environments are minimalistic, they convey the game’s quirky, magical theme. The audio matches the visual style—basic, repetitive, but oddly endearing for what it is. The game’s short length is both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, it’s a quick playthrough that won’t overstay its welcome. On the other hand, it might feel too simple or lacking in substance for gamers used to more complex modern titles. However, that brevity also makes it approachable, especially for retrogamers looking for a casual dive into gaming’s past. For retrogaming enthusiasts, Mystical serves as a fun, lighthearted throwback to an era when games didn’t need to be epic to entertain. If you can look past its outdated graphics and mechanics, you’ll find a charming little adventure that offers a brief but enjoyable journey through a bygone era of gaming. For anyone else, it’s a piece of history worth exploring, especially on sale, but with tempered expectations.
